Fallout 1 did this and it was incredibly broken. Just clearing out the raider camp left you with over twenty sets of leather armor and a few metals to boot. Doing this at the Brotherhood of Steel netted you the same amount of Combat Armors but I don't think Power Armor could be looted. If you cared, you could just sell all this shit for caps or wear it removing the need to even buy the armors in question.
This trend was removed in Fallout 2 and stayed with Tactics but came back in 3, New Vegas and 4.

Yes with custom sprites you can change the appearance of your pet to anything you so desire. Like I said before, the genetic engineering is completely optional. Assuming you're new, genetic engineering allows you to give your pets new abilities and extra body parts. It has nothing to do with the sprite itself. Why I don't just skip the genetic engineering is because I'm roleplaying as a perverted gene engineer that has a monster girl fetish so he uses the power of science to change a beast's forms into human looking girls. Does that make any sense? Also you can change your pets dialogue, AND have sex with them despite the gender.
