I play games handhelds all the time at home but I realize that it's far more appropriate to listen to music or read a book in public. I typically read on my daily hour bus ride, both for social reasons and because I don't feel comfortable with a $200 handheld sitting in my backpack all day.

I never see anyone doing this. I do it all the time if I'm taking the train, and I give 0 fucks what random strangers, who I will never see again, think about me.
I have a used PSP for mostly emulating NES, GB/GBC/GBA, PS1 and some PSP JRPGs. If I can have my favorite spot on the bus (next to the window, back in the corner etc), then I'm usually playing. It doesn't bother me what others think, but I don't like to have an audience, and on the other hand, I don't want to get up with a running game in my hand, so I rather play at spots where no one will ask me to stand up either because they want to get off and I'm in their way, or they want to sit down on my place.
Other than that, I have realized that having a handheld is the most comfy at late night in bed.

Today I went to visit my father (drunk so much he can no longer walk, shits and pees himself on) to the elderly asylum, I had to go because they needed a relative to be with him for the ambulance to take him to the hospital for some studies.
During the trip, inside the ambulance, I pull out the 3DS, and he tells me "arent you a little old for games?"

I played my 3ds in public once on the bus and some lady told me something along the lines of "aren't you a little to old for that?". Never played it in public again. Sometimes I still play my vita, most people think it's a phone.

I did play my 3DS once at Uni though when I had to wait for 2 hours there and I actually subtly paid attention to the people around me here and there. It didn't look like anyone was particularly paying attention to me, as expected
