I own they artbook for the second game and originally it had waaaay more material planned with the similair surrealist tone of the original. Tons of boss battles to. Though EA did what they do best and cut down the funding and deadlines so they were forced to ship an incomplete game. I think for what they had to work with it turned out well, Queensland, Dollhouse and Hatter's domain were all pretty enjoyable.
Madness Returns was a 1 hour long demo stretched into an 8 hour game, it had no really redeeming qualities apart from the art style
granted I didn't like the first one all that much either, it was a clunky platformer with below average combat, it was just something new and fresh at the time
