It stops going up at 22,000 XP per level at around Lv. 23. You get about 2,000 to 4,000 XP per match, so it takes about 8 - 12 matches at most depending on how well you do and how long they last.
When you hit 100, you can promote and set your level to 1 again. You keep all the lootboxes and their content that you've earned, and can earn more.
So tl;dr at most it takes you about 10 matches to earn a box, and there's no hard limit on how many you can earn.

Buff banner is OK for pushes but it is not general purpose. Conch is OK if you are roaming but it's worthless if you're anywhere near a medic. Neither are as versatile as having a shotgun. Reserve shooter is OK but generally an airshot is superior and the full 6 shots are better to have seeing as it's usually deployed when you have nothing left anyway. Direct Hit's lack of splash radius is a critical negative, being able to hit people indirectly with splash is incredibly useful.

1) leveling up is the only way to get boxes for free
2) you have to open a fuckload of boxes before you're able to buy the skins you want (legendaries)
If there was a 5-10% chance of a box dropping when you win a game, I wouldn't care.
In fact they should implement that for ranked.Ranked also needs to limit heroes to one of each per team because 5 people on your team picking torbjorn is annoying as fuck
And it's still better than WoW, where you pay $20 for admission, $50 more to play with everyone else, $15 a month to play at all, and on top of all that there's a cash shop even though they're getting $75 million a month from subs alone.
