Probably because the Mayans come up a lot in "ancient astronaut" theories, with the "rocket man" carving and such. This sort of interpretation of ancient art as alien/technological stuff draws from lots of different cultures all around the world, so it's easy to just mix a bunch of it together. Hence you get a robot who looks like an ancient Japanese statue, but is said to be Mayan.Since it';s not the details that are important so much as the overall image, which in this case is just the entire incipient alien" shtick in general.
