You have to leave when there's about a minute or less left on the map. Then it warns you "If you leave when the map ends soon, you'll be penalized."
If you actually leave while that warning is up, in the next match you only get 25% of the EXP after the match.

Yeah any time you might be penalized, it will tell you before you leave so you can choose to stay and not take the hit next match.
And it's called the "Leaver" penalty so it's really there to stop people from quitting early. Which is only really needed because it takes so long for the game to actually end and start up again.

The game slips from "close match" to "complete blowout" too fast. I think it has to do with the small teams.
I just leave. I don't care about EXP and I've already gotten all the skins I want. Leaver penalty doesn't matter to me. Losing grants very little EXP, so it's not like I'll miss it.
Now, when ranked comes out I'll stick around for those but until then.

If I can't keep my team alive no matter what I do, I don't know what I'm supposed to do anymore. Running after them with Lucio is okayish, buffing a Pharah with Mercy makes me a litter harder to kill and I've switched to Zenyatta or Roadhog sometimes, on a very few occasions this has actually paid off. I can't play Zenyatta, but his E plus orbs can really hurt the enemy, I've seen that. Getting the Bastion who used his ult to slap us with discord orb plus 6-orb-shot did the trick one time. We still lost tho.
There must be some background program which is responsible for letting you have only around 50% winrate. You win 3 games in a row and stomp the enemies, then you loose 3 and they stomp you. Only sometimes it's a close fight where both teams are quite balanced and it comes down to who can play or use their ults better. Those fights are fun no matter if we win or not. But they were rare, and I assume I'm playing with a team of 4 or 5 guys in these situations.

Yeah, I usually drop into a generally good character like Lucio or 76 just to fuck around. Or I'll pick some character I have low time on just to practice while the time runs out before we lose.

In general the background matchmaking is disgusting. I'm seeing level 48's on one side and 8's on the other again and again. And a simple "shuffle teams" at the end of the round would fix it but doesn't ever happen.

In pubs I play Lucio almost every time if there is no support. I'm not great, I've seen other Lucios do stuff I seem to be to stupid to accomplish. What I meant to say is I follow one guy around so I can at least keep him alive. McCree or Soldier76 are good examples. I can also help him kill stuff.

I've seen something like this happen a number of times tho, which further deepens my concerns about the matchmaking. Just today my two friends and I were matched against a really good Reaper who almost single handedly won the game for his team. Okay, we and our mates did never switch to counter, so it's our fault as well. They won both KotH rounds. Next thing was Numbani defense and suddenly this guy was in our team and we killed them in their spawn, any leftovers were picked off by him no matter the opponent. Then we couldn't attack because we were kicked out to "find a more balanced match". Maybe this Reaper had had his winning streak and was now being paired with retards in order to loose?
You can leave the second it goes into slow motion to tell victory or defeat and not get any penalty.
