It used to have its own soul, but now it's just slightly more expensive (upfront) console gaming for people - mostly rich teenagers too young to have any attachment to any console manufacturers - who've gotten themselves obsessed with framerates.
It was trash then and it's trash now.

Pretty much. Framerate fags have been around forever. Thanks to steam, the shovelware bargin bin of old is now the first thing you see when you start it. Frameratre does matter in action games, but for casual shit, it can be locked to 15 or less.

Because it used to be that to PC game you had to have a certain degree of technical proficiency with computers.
Now it's basically plug'n'play, and PC gaming caught the STD of "appealing to a wider market" from console gaming.

It was probably a necessary evolution, but game devs and hardware devs realized too quickly that they had a great symbiotic cash grab going on there, convincing people to worry about it all and force a rapid upgrade path to in turn play the latest games with best settings and vice-versa.
PC gaming was at its best when you had to be an autistic faggot squeezing every last drop out of conventional memory, and only had to deal with the roland rep at the store trying to make you feel retarded for not hearing the difference between his $300 megapenis card, and a $50 sound blaster.

Development costs rose.
When that happened, releasing games to one or two platform was no longer enough to many developers. This lead to the porting of games to every profitable platform they could run their game on which included PC. This lead to the PC (which used to have a mostly different collection of games from consoles) becoming home to superior versions of console multiplats (started in sixth gen but didn't become ubiquitous until the seventh gen). Thus, once some console gamers realized that they could play superior(most of the time) versions of multiplats along with some exclusives, they naturally moved to PC and started developing elitist additudes about their platform.
