Maybe because it wasn't a platformer, dumbshits. It was a puzzle/adventure game. Most of it was around exploration, collecting, and figuring out the cryptic secrets hidden around.
It's very niche, but I really liked it. These are buzzwords at this point but it's very comfy and atmospheric.
Some neat puzzles too.

Fez would have been decently well-received if Phil has just kept his mouth shut and been a little more polite in Indie Game: The Movie. Definitely not Undertale levels of indie popularity, but it would have had a following.

It was pretty decent, the art style and music was legit but the pc port had a bunch of stuff which required vibrations to pick up, so you were fucked on the pc port without a guide.

The story is iirc Fish co developed the game with the guy who made DYAD. At one point they split and it was agreed Fish would take all the art, since he did visuals and mechanics and the programmer would take the engine. Phil just took both and published it, dyad guys just ate it because Fish is well connected to bullies like Rami Ismael. This was the lawsuit mentioned in indie game the movie.

The most interesting part of the game, the cryptology-esque shit, was hidden behind your first playthrough.
So there's two halves of the Fez experience, a boring and slow-ass platformer with no obstacles or threats, and a somewhat interesting puzzle game with some neat ideas but in the end it's not good enough to redeem the game as a whole.
I'd rate it a 6/10 it's OK. Can't see why something so average would take 5 years to develop, myself.
