I don't like how the story is just a collection of random vignettes in Mother 1 and 2, and how none of the characters have anything at stake.
Mother 3 fixes both these issues. It's also better paced, the games before feel very monotonous.
I still like them all though.
Undertale is so high for me since while it has far worse writing than the Mother series, it has much more involved gameplay

No, it's a 16-Bit, better realized concept than Startropics. Having a Modern Setting can only be really emphasized in something with an emphasis on Story, otherwise it's just an Action Game with a different coat of paint. Having to actually go to an ATM to get Money is something that directly affects Gameplay, while shooting a Yo-Yo at weird Skull Chickens is really no different than whipping a weird Skull Chicken.

What are you talking about? Mother 2 was by far more balanced in terms of "when to level up your characters". There were moments in Mother 3 where you were just WASTING time on grinding in a place, then the next area would have enemies that suddenly jump in difficulty.
It didn't help that Duster and Boney both felt like they were just as powerless as "Lloyd" in Mother 1. There was a constant struggle to keep everyone EXCEPT Lucas alive in several battles. Kumatora was not that great either because frequently you could not use PSI on an enemy or the attack would be reflected back.
Most of the time, Duster's special moves would not even work on any boss fight except for TWO of them. Boney was only great for supplying items quickly, beyond NOT dying. The rhythm based attacks did not need to exist, period.

I personally prefer Earthbounds focus on the adventure as opposed to the characters and their story, but Mother 3's gameplay is 100% a step up from EBs. If EB had Mother 3's combat It'd be a seriously stellar title, but as it stands it's kind of a fun but mediocre adventure that's got a special place in my heart.

I didn't need any grinding in Mother 3. Some bosses were a struggle, but I vastly prefer that to Mother 2's difficulty, since the whole game is a cakewalk.
The bosses in 3 often demand for a lot of buffing and debuffing, and even specific tactics, while in 2 you just hit them with your strongest PSI and bottle rockets and they die in a few turns.
Maybe you had trouble in 3 because you tried to play it like 2?
I agree that the rhythm attacks were a completely unneeded addition though, but you really don't need them at any part.

As for the mom 2 kids you kinda interpret it yourself, the characters are as deep as you want them to be. I do agree that their should have been more dialouge between them but you have your imagination for that.

Very good but rough around the edges, if you have experience with famicom jrpgs that helps. I highly recommend playing it. I recommend the hacked version that adds tomato's fan translation to the nes version. The only flaw of this version is due to certain memory constraints certain lines are cut short and grammatically incorrect but its still the best version. Mostly you just discover from talking to a monkey nearby the "witch village" that Maria is your grandmother; you use Magicant over and over again like Xen in Half-Life 2 with an item called the "Onyx Hook" which acts as an "oh shit, I can't deal with this" "Unlimited" escape route item to grind your low level characters that join your party.
By constantly spamming the "magic fountain" in Magicant (which also serves as an ATM machine) for unlimited HP. You also use the witch village to buy all the most expensive armor possible at the 3 shops nearby the village exit so your weak or underleveled characters aren't instantly killed when grinding.
The last purpose of Magicant is to talk to "Queen Maria" one last time after you get the 8th melody, then Maria reveals Magicant was actually just an illusion created by her consciousness and it is assumed she is either dead or a floating consciousness.
TL;DR: You have to prove to Maria you are capable of killing Giegue by going to Magicant and showing you have all the melodies, so she removes the rocks from the entrance to the final boss battle.

Hey, I beat this game again today.
It's a lot better than I remember. The gameplay can be kind of boring (as turn-based RPGs in general are), the need to grind in particular can make the game a bit of a slog at times, but the odometer system and the way encounters work is great. Its biggest draw, of course, is the atmosphere, especially the art style (which shines much better in battles than in the overworld, but even then the overworld graphics aren't half bad considering what it's going for), story, and soundtrack. The final battle is more unsettling the older you are when you play it.
