What are some games where I can use the best and most elegant weapon ever made?
>>
Dark souls of course
Estoc is bestoc
>>
Nothing. When they appear in video games at all, it's usually as a cosmetic option in the regular sword category, complete with slashing animations.
>>
>>339273784
I can't think of any other game that does this best.

I've always loved raipers and such and DaS is hands down my favorite game that caters to that.

Were rapiers and the like ever really used in warfare, or were they just dueling weapons? I guess the estoc-types were actually designed against armor, or something?

rapiers are shit in video games, except maybe Soul Caliber. DaS3 was kind of fun I guess but even so no game can actually accurately portray a true master of fencing.
>>
Warframe.
>>
>>339273846
>I don't know what I'm talking about: the post

How about you go back to playing Skyrim, kiddo.
>>
>>339274025
it was just a dueling thing
>>
>>339273664
When ever they're done properly like dark souls they end up being the gayest weapons in the game. I don't think I've ever seen a game with cool rapiers. Soul Cal is another example of this.
>>
>>339273664
Bloodborne has the best rapier. It comes also with a gun attached and the coolest name.

>>
>>339274359
How is it that Fromsoft can do so well with the weapons in Bloodborne in terms of design and feel, then go to DaS3 and go right back to making rapiers absolute shit, with the sole exception of the estoc. I want something with a swept hilt and long reach, not that same shitty fucking smallsword rapier that's in every fucking Souls game. They came so close with the Crystal Sage Rapier, but it's got shit scaling and wastes its potential on piddly magic damage and a fucking item discovery buff. It's a gimmick weapon to be used offhand for farming, that's it.
>>
>>339273664
Risen 2 and 3

these are meh games though
>>
>>339273664
The standard rapier in Dark Souls II is literally OP.
Ricard's Rapier with a lot of buffs has the highest dps in Dark Souls.

Give Blade Symphony a try, It's unbalanced and shit so get it on sale but when you agree with someone to do foil/epee only on a piste it's pretty great
>>
Blade Symphony had a nice rapier wielding guy.

It was really well done. Sadly the game didn't garner much of an audience because of various issues.
>>
Mount & Blade Warband.

Rapiers are bullshit that only became popular because "muh civilization" when spears and halberds are a definite level of more effective combat.

there*
>I dun goofed
>>
>>339276201
That's arguable. Rapiers have better hand protection, have nibler points, can be used with one hand comfortably. Spears are less nible and give no hand protection and it's not as comfortable to use with a shield or buckler.
Also rapiers cut better.
>>
>>339277129

Fire and Sword has them but uh...Fire and Sword sucks, I guess. I really like it but other people give it shit for some reason. It has winged hussars from the Polish kingdom and the Kingdom of Sweden and a bunch of other shit that's really cool.
>>
>>339277668

I admit, the rapier was the final western development of the sword. It's just that most people only used a sword in combat when all their other options ran out. Lances were usually used. Swords were your last resort when you were unhorsed.
>>
Pirates!
>>
>>339274047
Why do they absolutely refuse to do anything with their left hand?
>>
>>339279165
What are you implying about these gentlemen you honorless peasant?
>>
>>339277668
Good luck getting close enough to someone using a spear with a rapier.
If you have two fighters of equal skill the one with the spear will beat the one with the rapier almost every time.
>>
>>339279416

Well, there's a technical way to get past a spear with a sword. I mean, there are technical manuals dating back centuries that tell you how, from the people that actually did it.

It wasn't simply hypothesis back then. They wrote their story because they lived to write it.
>>
>>339279251
Did they agree to not use their offhand before the fight?
>>
>>339279638
With a rapier though? I've seen german longsword diagrams like that, but never anything with a rapier.
>>
>>339279923

It became irrelevant by that point. I'm not arguing the validity of the rapier. It was the full development of the weapon when religious wars became a thing of the past in Europe. Then there was dueling over very dumb things when it could have been settled without single combat.
>>
>>339279746

You can't two hand an Épée and since they don't have anything to do with their left hand it would just get in the way.

Fist on waist stops retarded flailing on the arms, doesn't hinder the leg movement in anyway, and takes up the least space.
>>
>>339274025
Spanish tercios used rapiers during battles (XVII century aprox), aswell as pikes and other weapons

>>339274025
>Were rapiers and the like ever really used in warfare
Yes.

Between the 16th and 17th century, rapiers saw battlefield usage. It should be considered that these were side-arms though. Primary weapons would be pikes, lances, wheel-lock pistols, arquebuses, etc.
>>
>>339273664
That's no Zweihander.
>>
>>339278870
>the rapier was the final western development of the sword
Not really.

Various sabre- and backsword type weapons were developed after the rapier. Smallswords, spadroons, etc. came after the rapier. Just to name some examples. Not to mention academic fencing weapons like Schlaegers, and of course the modern sports fencing weapons.
>>
>>339280256

It was during the colonial period for the most part.

The Spanish were savage fucks, no jokes. The world though, would not be what it is today without them.

In Verdadera Destreza there's a technique called "Atajo". It is performed with both hand. You basically get the oponent's rapier.

What people don't seem to understand is that western sword-fighitng is, and was far more developed than anything that people thought-up in Asia.

We adopted the firearm so quickly that everyone forgot about it voluntarily. There's a certain beauty in western swordsmanship. A student of history knows this.
>>
>>339280981

You mean the points where they're bantering? You're wondering why they're not grappling with each other during the witty dialogue?
>>
>>339281318
It's appreciated also in HEMA associations
>>
>>339281896

Well, I love martial arts. Even older and more traditional ones.

I read old combat manuals that detail the experience of people who survived to tell their story. We don't use swords anymore, but that's doesn't mean we should throw away the texts of those that did.

"Yes", but in the same capacity as the katana. They were first and foremost civilian; it just so happened that some people took them with them to war and carried them in addition to their regular weapons (usually regional variants of "pole weapon" and "ranged weapon")
>>

>>
>>339282754

The Katana was a heavily refined weapon. Yet, even the Samurai didn't usually use them. Their focus was actually on the bow-and-arrow. We put the emphasis on their sword. Then the media ran with it.

The samurai were actually outstanding marksman. Not swordsman like everyone thinks.
>>
>>339282979
no discovery channel tier japanese history shit please.
>>
>>339282979
I'm aware of all this. Most wars were fought withh naginata's, yari's and bows. Katana was a symbol of prestige.

I don't know what you mean by "heavily refined" though. Are you talking about folding the metal to get a more homogenous steel?
>>
>>339283130

No Australia tier shitpostling.

Please.
>>
>>339282979
Japanese steel was rubbish though
>>
>>339283161

It was refined because they didn't have very pure iron. The folding method was used because they couldn't refine steel as well, and worse; their source of iron was subject to a lot of impurities.
