It's a mess of a mash up of genres.
There's MOBA and Tower Defense mechanics demanding awareness and team play without facilitating either with mechanics.
It's First Person so you can't quickly track important information like lane positions or teammate locations. You also can't track for shit with the several melee characters.
Compound that with aggressive bloated HUD and unrestrained particle effects going off everywhere and you have a recipe for an ill time.
It came out at FULL RETAIL price on digital distribution platforms when it's biggest competition was releasing for 40 bucks and already slated for a better start due to extensive beta hype marketing.

It was a scam game. Not nearly enough content to justify it's launch price, the campaign was too short and didn't utilize most of the characters they made and it fell back on wave defense too many times. Unlock requirements get ridiculous and only recently could someone who doesn't have at least two friends were able to unlock everyone outside of the slow leveling system. Like Destiny and the Division the game is designed to try and get you to stick around as long as possible with as little content as possible, because 2 maps for each multi mode is just pathetic.

I don't think it's the greatest game out there, but it seriously gets WAY more hate than it deserves. Yes you can unlock most people heroes, not the new ones, through leveling or challenges. The problem is that some of those challenges are just retarded, Ghault is probably one of the best characters for PvP because if you set up a trap and a hook it's almost a guaranteed kill on anyone but the only way to unlock him is hit Level 40 or complete all the campaign missions on Advanced Silver or higher. Problem is until recently there was no way to play Advanced difficulty in matchmaking, so you had to have friends or play the game solo and certain missions, like Saboteur and Renegade are very difficult to do solo because the AI will prioritize sniping the core over killing you almost 50% of the time. And now after adding MM Advanced Campaign when there is barely anyone playing normal campaign, it really makes no difference.
It should also be noted that I really can't tell the difference between normal and advanced, because they play almost the exact same. Fuck the final mission wasn't any different on the harder difficulty the enemies just did more damage

You're pretty factually wrong. All it takes is loading up the first level on both difficulties to see it, the very first spot you encounter enemies the advanced difficulty has like double the enemies, and half of them are tougher enemy types including some that will ceaselessly try to spawn more enemies.
But if you're not satisfied with that level of being wrong, the final mission also doubles the number of bosses in the boss rush section, simultaneously. You cannot have possibly missed the fact that you were fighting one boss on normal difficulty, and then were fighting two different bosses on advanced.

When I hear people saying that they enjoyed Borderlands games I feel like I'm from a different fucking planet.
The first one was so boring. The only thing it had going for it was the artstyle, but even then the environments were all the same and everything had a grey and brown tinge. On the other hand, the gunplay was terrible, there was no enemy variation, enemies were bulletsponges none of the npcs did or said anything interesting and it was all just wow/diablo 2 with guns but worse in every aspect.
Borderlands 2 was more colorful and the gameplay felt a bit better (but not by much, it was still shit) with the addition of having extremely poor and annoying writing, as opposed to the first game, which had no writing at all. They're all just so weak from every aspect and so boring to play that I can't wrap my head around the idea people liking it. It's like enjoying listening to someone singing out of tune.

What I really liked was that it was like diablo 2, but an fps, the item gen system was relatively good.
The gun play was mediocre, but going through missions with friends, rescuing each other, thinking of tactics on how to pass this and that without dying a million times was all part of the fun. The gunplay isn't that bad, it's just a cover based shooting.

For a class shooter and a team game locking most of the characters immediately makes the game less competitive, enjoyable and less fun. There's a lot of confusion, ignorance, and fear around Battleborn's potential future, so as a competitive player, early access member, and streamer, I want to bring my opinion as to how I feel the current state of Battleborn is:
It's doing great! Population is growing yet small enough that you play with a lot of the same people and get to make friends with them. You don't have to worry about some baffoon being an idiot like in Overwatch.
Competitive Play: Earlier today our first community run tournament ended. It had an amazing grand finals and dedicated people running it, with a whopping 25ish teams signed up for it. This afternoon at check-in time, we ended up with 5. Wow. This is A LOT better than most new games. Overwatch doesn't even have a pro scene LOL!
TL; DR: Battleborn is doing great. Stop trying to dig its grave.

I think that Pre-Sequel was the probably the best -gameplay wise - game they made.
Even thought I played OG Borderlands for about 500 hours, I enjoyed the second one more. It felt more polished and faster paced.

For the general audience it would hold them back. I'm right with you on not having anything against ugly models (hell I even like system shock 2 vanilla today) but for the general audience at large they absolutely would get turned off. So many people want to be the good looking charismatic person and video games let them do it. Hell even in cod and bf games that usually featured stoic hardened battle scared looking men they have been getting handsome and more beautiful as time goes by because the general audience wants to be beautiful and look at beautiful people

You can get away with not caring about the characters if the game itself looks fucking awesome and exciting, and entices people to want to get into that. Immersion candy has the same power as avatar candy when it comes to attracting players.
That's where battleborn dropped the ball, because while the characters are alright depending on taste, the enviroments and effects most certainly are ugly as fuck. Even the UI gets annoying after awhile.
I had some fun with it during the beta(not $60 worth of fun, but,) and made a few vids to review later. Even knowing I was having fun at the time, I look at my own gameplay clips and go "how the fuck did I ever deal with staring at that the whole time?"

FFS. Hate on gearbox for what they deserve, but APOGEE MADE DNF. Seriously fucking blame them for it, they deserve the hate just as much as gearbox. They fucked it up so bad they had to give Duke Gearbox just to get Gearbox to """""fix"""""" it for them so it could release before they got sued by the publisher. It was apogee who were responsible for all the shit in that game being absolute garbage.
If it didn't come out within a month of Overwatch it may have had a chance, though the fact that pretty much everyone hates Gearbox and the game was fundamentally just chasing the MOBA gold rush (though with a slightly different take on the concept) would have limited how well it was going to do regardless.
Still, it would probably had a decently healthy player population for a few months before it died down at the very least, instead of being straight-up stillborn due to being completely incinerated in the flames of the launch of a game made by a significantly more trusted developer, with a significantly better aesthetic, and gameplay modeled primarily after a game that people *haven't* been spending the past 4-5 years scrambling for the table scraps of.

Yeah, for all the mistakes they've made over the years the biggest one was letting HotS rot on the backburner (they had the game that would eventually become it demoed as a SC2 custom map at Blizzcon 2010, it didn't hit alpha until March 2014) until after LoL hit critical mass. Had they at least gotten their foot in the door by the time LoL was getting big they probably would have at least achieved DOTA2 numbers.
