I remember when i was younger, playing unreal and warcraft 3 with people was some of the funniest shit i've ever done, and a big part of that "atmosphere" came from the natural banter between players.
Somewhere down the road, this banter got switched into actual insults, being as much of a cunt as possible and losing the comraderie bit completely in favor of being a cunt, just because you could.
Honestly there are exceptions, numerous in fact, but my personal experience with this is that when i played older games, the fanbase seemed to get what was the line between banter between players or just being a cunt, and if you WERE a cunt you'd get outed like the cunt you are.

For a long time the internet had its own social codes and they were very different from the real world. This was because the internet was its own little seperate world and things that happened here had little impact on anything else.
