Why haven't you installed Ubuntu yet? It's super easy, and if enough people install Steam on Linux, more game developers will support Linux and we can finally be free from Microsoft's increasingly shitty behavior.

what is it the year of?
>>
>>339218270
That's because game devs don't see much of a reason to make a good port over to Linux as everyone is on Windows. That'll change if everyone decided to switch to Linux.
>>
>>339218076
Linux is already widely used (Android, a number of operating systems for professional/industrial use, etc etc). And I doubt Linux will ever become mainstream on the desktop, I'm just hoping it becomes popular enough among PC gamers that more devs support it.

NVidia using proprietary drivers. The only decent AMD drivers are the Free drivers (the ones not from AMD, they're a goddamn mess) but you will get lowered performance.

Because Windows 10 spies on you, and look at how viciously Microsoft is pushing Windows 10 upgrades. It literally doesn't give you the option to say no. Do you want a company that behaves like that to have a near monopoly (Apple being the only competition, but that's only at higher price points and definitely not for gamers)?
>>
If we all switched to Linux, devs would be left with little choices but do proper Linux ports of even their AAA games and drop the idea of making Windows 10 exclusives

>>
>>339224145
You don't even need to switch, dual booting is just fine too, or even virtual machines. We just need devs to see Steam is installed on so many Linux machines and the support for Linux will gradually increase (as it already is).
>>
I installed Ubuntu on an old laptop the other day, and I was surprised to see the library for Linux games on steam is actually pretty big. I remember a few years ago gaming on Linux was basically non existent outside of being able to run them on Wine. What happened over the years? Where did this boom come from?
>>
Why would devs support Linux when they already don't support OS X and its already larger user base. Windows is shitty, but for compatibility/popularity nothing will ever compare
>>
Does anyone know how much it costs to port a game to Linux? Is it just a matter of making the game engine support Linux and then the cost of actually porting games that use that engine to Linux is virtually zero (besides the play testing needed to make sure there aren't any bugs)? Like if EA spent $500,000 (just making those numbers up, I have no idea how much it'd actually cost) on making Frostbite support Linux, would all of their games that use Frostbite basically be compatible with Linux after updating them?
>>
just dual-boot idiot
>>
>>339225717
linux is free and available to everyone with a toaster, OSX is very very costly to get even close to something resembling a gaming computer.
>>
>>339225717
One of the reasons for not supporting OS X is the fact that only Apple can release graphics drivers for it, meaning the drivers are always outdated. The latest version of OpenGL supported in OS X is 4.1, which came out in 2010.
>>
>linux
>functional OS

lol
>>
With Windows 10 being literally impossible to pirate and Microsoft dropping windows 7 support within the next 5 years, I expect Linux will be the next standard. No one actually buys an OS. Everyone who builds their own computer pirates windows because it's convenient. Once that's made impossible, the next OS to use is Linux.
>>
>>339225717
Because nobody buys Macs for gaming. Only the most expensive Macs have anything better than Intel's integrated graphics, and the ones with good graphics cards are targeted towards professionals like video editors, so they use the more expensive pro versions of AMD/Nvidia's stuff. Literally nobody buys Macs for gaming, so there wouldn't be much demand at all for OS X games that aren't iOS tier shit in the Mac app store.

On the other hand, Linux is often used by people who dual boot to play games on Windows. And now Linux has the backing of Valve, who want to make it a viable alternative to Windows for gaming. Another benefit for Linux is that there is no licensing fee, SteamOS machines are cheaper than Windows machines, which is a huge advantage for "console killer" PCs like Steam boxes.
>>
>>339226515
works fine for me for the last 2 years, I will never go back to windows.
>>
>>339226671
I really hope steam doesn't drop steamOS. I want to see the Linux gaming community grow.
>>
>>339226803
it's a shame everytime i use wine to run steam it flags it as windows OS logging in and skewing the numbers I wish there was a way to tell valve I am using linux

>>
>>339227087
I play WoW on linux, in fact it runs better through wine than it does on windows.
>>
>>339226803
It'd be cool if gaming laptops started to come with the option to have Steam OS preinstalled instead of Windows, that way they could be $50-100 cheaper (idk how much Windows licenses cost for manufacturers).
>>
>implying I dont use Ubuntu already
>implying I game on my PC in the first place

>>339226671
The Intel integrated cards in macbook are faster than most "discrete" laptop gpus. That's why they stopping including nvidia and radon cards as choices. Fun fact, my 2014 macbook pro runs Witcher 3 on high settings with AA
>>
>most games don't have linux releases
>not every game works through WINE, and it's a crapshoot whether those that do have good performance
>AMD drivers are absolute shit, Nvidia are better but not as good as the Windows ones

Fix this shit and maybe I'll consider a linux distro for gaming. It's not the consumer's responsibility to unfuck all of this.

I'm guessing you're running at 1280x800 (13") or 1440x900 (15") at 30fps. My late 2013 one (with gt750m even) can barely run anything that came out after ~2012. I uninstalled Windows because there's just no point.
>>
>>339227567
If you can't even handle Windows, you definitely can't handle Linux.

Anyways, your experience on Linux is pretty dependent on drivers and if your machine isn't well supported by Linux, you can have some problems like that.

If linux is ever going to be a mainstream desktop OS
Everything needs to be done without having to open up the terminal
I know a lot of enthusiasts will defend the terminal tooth and nail
But let's face it, the average user doesn't want to to punch in a seemingly alien combination of symbols just to install some drivers

Sony had used linux as the default OS on their console thus game dev support came into existence.
Hopefully the evil that is STEAM will propagate more linux support to the point of making it a viable gaming option.
