Bloodborne.

Bloodborne, off course.

Anyone who played Bloodborne will choose Bloodborne

DS3 because BB is a PS4 exclusive
>>
I played Bloodborne and DS3 back to back and enjoyed BB more.
>>
>>339216467
BB is better pve-wise in most every way. It was certainly more unique considering DS3 is mostly just a rehashing/fanservice attempt centered around DS1.
>>
>>339216467
Bloodborne, by far.
>>
Bloodborne. DaS3 is great but it suffers from the abundance of fan service. Neither can touch DaS1 though.

Bloodborne because it tries to do lots of thing different and also because it is self contained. While DS3 is a rehashed fest with a lot of the things needing the other two games to explained themselves.

Also the combat in BB is, for me, more fun.

Bloodborne is probably the best game i've ever played. The setting/world/lore is fantastic and combat is easily the best i've seen in an RPG.

DLC is also fantastic as well

Until the dlc is out we can only compare the base games. I havent even played the old hunters yet but I'm well aware of the praise it receives here and I feel it's safe to say that most people would agree comparing full BB to vanilla DS3 would be unfair.

Just off the base games it's hard to say. I agree with this somewhat >>339216604
Bloodborne is still very soulsesque but it was a breath of fresh air. DaS3 definitely refined and mastered some aspects of souls but made a lot of changes for the worst.

Honestly all 5 of the games considered soulsborne have something going for them that the other games dont. It would be easier to rank them all in seperate categories such as pvp, pve, bosses, lore, weapons and armor, spells, etc.
>>
Hmm, I would say Bloodborne. It was just a really well designed game all around and it was a different enough take on the formula to really stand out from the others. Plus I find the trick weapons to be amazing and completely new to me.

God damn it, this sword is just too OP, gonna use it until i can farm better weapons since faggots keeps invading me.

Bloodborne has a better atmosphere, and better music.

I enjoyed the faster-paced combat as well.

That being said, DaS3 is pretty close.
>>
>>339218303
Nah, Vanilla BB was better than Vanilla DaS3. Better story, better levels and better bosses. Not as many weapons, but any combination of Str, Skill(Dex), Arc, or Bloodtinge had at least two dedicated weapons, and Quality had half a dozen at least.

In DaS3, Faith is worthless outside of the minimum prereqs for meme weapons, Int is almost worthless until late game when you get the crystal soul spear, at which point why use anything else, and Pyromancy was half-decent, but has no dedicated weapons. There are an enormous amount of weapons that are objectively useless and aren't even worth putting in the game, like Saint's Bident and the Mail Breaker (seriously, who the fuck ever uses a mailbreaker?)

Long story short: BB was better than DaS3 BEFORE The Old Hunters, and the presence of the DLC only slingshots it even higher in my opinion. Once all the DLC content for DaS3 is out, we can hold a final verdict, but I have a hard time believing the DLC will be able to salvage the base game's fundamental problems. It would take a serious balance patch and a severe buff to casters in general and weapon efficacy to change my mind.

I honestly enjoyed DS2 more than DS3 and it's not because it was better but because the formula still felt a little fresh. Playing DS3 was almost like a chore for me at the end. BB feelt as fresh as DeS or DS1 though. So Bloodborne for me.

I have some bad news, anon...there is no better weapon. As long as you keep upgrading it and don't spam R1 like a retard in PvP nothing can outclass it short of UGS and other heavy weapons. Even then, your DPS with the Dark Sword will be comparable if not superior, because it's faster and easier to land a hit than with Fume's ultra slow buildup.

What? It seems like every encounter is trying to get behind them for a quick backstab or R1 them to death because almost all of them have no poise. Also, they added a ton of mobs and DS system, unlike BB, doesnt work well with lots of enemies (see the gank squad bosses of DS2 DLC)

Butcher's cleaver is kind of fun, and great for Lunatic Cannibal cosplay builds.

The only thing that bugs me about it is that it's shitty weapon arte prevent you from buffing it, and I'm pretty sure you don't absorb ANY health from hits unless you use the arte.

It's supposed to absorb health with each hit, right? Can anyone confirm whether or not it does so without the L2 buff activated?

>>339220074
You're not even halfway. You're about a third, or a quarter if you count all optional content and the DLC. You're technically capable of accessing the DLC now that you've killed Amelia, but DON'T. You'll get your shit pushed in hard.

The only reason you should enter the DLC area at this point is to run for the armor set and weapons lying in the first area. There's 3 strength weapons and I think 1 Skill weapon before the first bossfight, and three sets of armor. You'll have a hell of a time getting them though.
>>
>>339219431
The enemy design felt really lackluster to me in BB. Every single enemy in the game can be r1 spammed stunlocked to death without any thought required and the only two that can't are two of the most unfun, bullshit enemies in the series. The mobs in DaS3 aren't great either but I found the outrider knights and the black knights pretty fun to fight.

I probably goofed in thinking that pve also meant bosses. If thats the case than DaS3 and BB and equal.
>>
>People generally have a DaS1 boss they love to fight each playthrough
>From adds bonfire ascetics in DaS2 for those people
>Miyazaki, the supposed superior idea-guy, says fuck fans and removes the concept from BB
>Still doesn't bring it back in DaS3 despite taking a bunch from DaS2 and DaS1

There is literally no reason I shouldn't be able to fight Pontiff again solo.
I don't want to go through the "Miyazaki" experience just to fight a boss I like

How can anyone prefer DS1 to DaS3? At least DemonSouls and Bloodbornefags have "originality" as an argument but DS1 doesn't even have that due to it being a complete rehash of Demon Souls?

The last half of DS1 was complete trash, PVP is a disaster due to backstab fishers with "Muh Ninja flip ring" and the bosses are all mediocre outside of O&S?

The DLC was fantastic but the base game was complete mediocrity compared to DS3, let alone Bloodborne.

>>339220294
That's bullshit, though. In BB pretty much every enemy has some kind of blink recovery strike it will use if r1'd too many times in a row, and all larger besital enemies have hyperarmor attacks. Outrider knights are actually a DaS3 example of this, and a sign to me that From is really fucking sick of Dark Souls.

Think off all the enemies in DaS3 that make you think "this shit is right out of Dark Souls!" There's a reason why that is, and I think it's this: The people designing enemies for Dark Souls 3 were still high on the aesthetic and combat philosophy of Bloodborne, and had to force themselves to slow down to make more chunky, slow Dark Souls enemies for 3. They made Souls 3, but what they really want to be making right now is Bloodborne 2 or something similar.

Story and singleplayer-wise, Bloodborne.

In terms of multiplayer, Dark Souls III is the clear winner.

Bloodborne also has more fantastic bosses but they're sandwiched in-between some mediocre ones while Dark Souls 3 has some consistently okay fights that are neither really good or really bad.

Bloodborne, bar none.

I played DaS3 and enjoyed it a ton but that was about it, all I have to look forward to is the DLC, yet I'm already back and playing the shit out of Bloodborne again, there's something about it that keeps me coming back, always new builds to try, always new weapons (that actually feel distinct from eachother, unlike most of DaS3 weapons) and the way the world, combat system and mechanics flow together so well I just keep coming back for more. I'm not even a sonygger, I honestly with this game WAS on PC so my fellow PCbros could enjoy it just as much as I do.

The Old Hunter set is strewn about the starting area, which is a tattered coat, and one of those face covering high-collars with a wide-brimmed hat. There's also a british constable set, and a nice swallowtail coat with a butcher's apron on the front.

The weapons are the Beast Cutter, a strength weapon that combines the toothed look of the saw cleaver and the chain-whip of the threaded cain, the Hunter's Saif, which is a great Skill weapon that folds up like a saw cleaver, but has a different moveset and a lot of good combos into transformation for quick advanced and retreats, the Boom Hammer, a Str/Arc weapon that you can charge with the transform for a more powerful, flame-charged swing, and the Wirligig Saw, which is the Pizza Cutter you have no doubt heard of already.

There's also an NPC you can murder early who drops a sword that transforms into a bow which does Bloodtinge damage you can charge up. It's a great Bloodtinge/Skill weapon.

There is no shortage of amazing shit for you to find.

Well, basic townsfolk with torches will catch you with a torch thrust if you get greedy, Brick trolls will shove you bodily away, fly fuckers will jump on your head regardless of how many times you attack, and these are just the things that pop into my head after not playing for months. You don't know shit, so maybe you shouldn't be telling people to kill themselves for disagreeing with your punk ass.

>>339221803
Starting AREA. You can, with some courage and luck, run past all the enemies in the area and just run for all the item drops. It's what I did my first time, one I realized the mobs in the area will kick your fucking ass for free.

>It was not fresh at all because it was a virtual rehash of Demon Souls.
Seriously anon? Do you understand what rehash fucking means? Dark Souls is a literal fucking rehash of Demon Souls, just done better.

Bloodborne has the base gameplay mechanics as the souls games just tuned in different ways. Its setting is also extremely fresh for the series.
I love that it wasn't a direct sequel and actually was allowed to he it's own thing. And yeah, it was pretty glorious.

Bosses:
DaS3>BB

Although Old Hunters had Orphan and Ludwig, two of the series best bosses, I didn't care for the rest and the main game wasn't exactly spectacular boss wise.

The best fights in BB were Orphan, Ebrietas, Gehrman, Logarius and Abhorrent Beast

Champion Gundyr, Nameless King, Twin Princes, Pontiff Sulyvahn and Soul of Cinder were the best in 3 and they easily eclipse the majority of BB's.

BB had pretty good area design though, but I felt the overly drab theme weared incredibly thin by the end of the game, as the game didn't really try to expand into anything interesting, the nightmare areas would have been perfect for this, but instead we get a really useless desert/dusty ruin area, and the nightmare of mensis which feels like a retread of the main game

In terms of music, I appreciated the production in BB, but the monotonous horror feeling wore thin with a lot of the bosses, to the point where it lacked a sense of identity, I felt this was most prevalent in the chalice bosses. I would say that Ebrietas and Gehrman are the stand outs from the main game, and Ludwig/Living Failures/Orphan are the standouts from the dlc, although I disliked Ludwig's first phase and Orphans second for reasons previously mentioned.

In dark souls 3, there were a few tracks I disliked, ancient wyvern and crystal sage sound a bit muddled in inspiration and could have used more time, but other than that I generally like the soundtrack, a lot of the bosses have vastly different sounding tracks that suit them really well, something BB was good at was reinforcing the theme of the fight, I felt DS3 did this as well as making the tracks enjoyable outside of the fight largely.

Gascoigne's theme in particular, it added tension to the fight very well, but outside it was painfully boring.

I would say DS3's standouts are Sulyvahn's, Nameless King's, Twin Princes, Yhorm's, Oceiros's and Dancer's.

Overall I rate the series as:

DaS3>BB>DaS>DaS2>DeS

Do people not rate how much they believe their games are worth to them? You buy a base triple A game brand new at release for $60. Is it worth $60? Usually not. But if you love a game that much wouldn't you actually say it's worth so much more?
I bought Bloodborne for $40 with $20 going to the DLC, and that's one of the greatest games I've played since Dark Souls.

I only rate DaS2 higher because the dlc content has fantastic level design and 6 really good bosses.

I went back to demons souls to replay it around about January, and it felt incredibly dated the whole way through, not enough for me not to appreciate it in some ways, but also not enough for me to put it ahead of any other game.

I also found that most of the music in the game is absolute garbage with the exception of like 3 or so tracks.

But it was hardly a transition.

It was limp as fuck.

You kill Rom and then you go to yahargul where you fight more peasants, and then weird bloody wolves and body cages.

The only real difference was the moon and amygdala's, I don't really understand how they made much impact after byrgenwerth.

Then you go to the lecture building which felt kind of jarring by being disconnected from the world, and you fight off slime students, it's hardly amazing, then you go to nightmare frontier with it's whole 3 useful things to do, fight amygdala, who is both limp in visual aesthetic after the more oppressive looking yahar'gul ones and limp in mechanics, and then you go to nightmare of mensis where you go through more gothic hallways.

It was just kind of shit.

Other than the encounter with Ebrietas and moon presence I don't really think BB ever elevated itself into Eldritch horror unless you really got around to digging into the lore while you went through and theorycrafted shit.

So many people sell the game on the "twist" but I just don't get the big deal, it marked the point where the bosses became worse, the areas became worse, and the game lost all pace, I don't really get how it's even a "twist" considering the second location the player character is likely to go is hunters dream.

I wish they did more with the nightmare areas to be honest.

It's thankful we got somewhere as interesting as fishing hamlet in the dlc, but that doesn't excuse the poor execution in the main game.

I was receptive to the idea of being a Werewolf Hunter in Gothic/Victorian Not!London, but the sudden switch from Gothic Monsters to Eldritch Horrors from the Darkness Between Stars was both seamless and vastly more interesting than the game was advertised to be.

Not only that, but I honestly found the usual Souls Game level-based storytelling turning Bloodborne from an action powertrip to a genuine horror. The revelation of what's actually going on in Yarnham, the details you pick up on walking through town, seeing the statues in the cathedral, and finally, seeing the mummified corpses of people, frozen in a desperate struggle to escape whatever the fuck was moving through the streets in a tortuous monument like some kind of victorian Pompeii. Men, Women and children, all climbing over each other, desperately cramming themselves into any space they'll fit through, anywhere they can reach to get away from whatever it was they saw there, before dying by the hundreds. And the revelation that The Amygdalas were there, the whole time. Watching you. Everywhere.

Bloodborne scared the shit out of me, but not in a BOOGABOOGABOO! sort of way. It scared me with a slow, seeping, dawning sense of dread and terror, realizing that you have wandered into something far more dire than you could ever have expected.

Bloodborne's atmosphere is a masterpiece. This is objective truth.

I fucking hate to say it... but memeborne sadly.

Way too much community pandering, shit pvp, shit pve with really underpowered magic/faith, reused boss ideas (for the 3rd or 4th time) and several terrible bosses all in a game that's shorter than the previous two souls games.

At least for BB being shorter it had much more new content and was better balanced in pve as a game. Most weapons were at least usable and/or good or overpowered, no really shitty gear except doll set. The bosses whilst resuing the big hairy wolf monster meme too much on several bosses who shared similar patterns (even some DLC content was this bad) it had much more variation and fresh ideas.

I honestly still think BB should come to PC (because of mods and better framerate) despite having a PS4 just for it, and hence prefer the model of DaS3 (all systems supported). But the honest truth, and I knew it ever since announcement, is that this game didn't have enough dev time. When they announced it I was like "Already?". They just got BB out the door and DaS2 had Scholars and they already wanted to shove this out the door. They just didn't put enough time, concern or effort into it and it shows.

The nightmare of mensis is exactly the problem though.

Apart from the brain sub area, the game reiterates the gothic hallways and overall Victorian vibe.

The nightmare area could have literally been anything.

Anything at all, it could have been your worst nightmare, it could have even been something from the main game, corrupted to look horrible in every way, like hunters nightmare was in the dlc, but nightmare of mensis was just kind of "more bland dark Victorian aesthetic".

It just fell absolutely flat.

DaS3 needs a few patches and DLCs to fix it, which is a shame because the ease of use for some of the covenants and the sheer volume of people playing make it enjoyable.

Right now it has Bloodborne's armor system with equip load and a stifling damage calculation mechanic attached to it, a set of rolling mechanics that isn't as fun as the quickstep, and a weapon pool of unbalanced weapons that, sans some outliers, aren't as cool as trick weapons on the whole.

We aren't talking about how you feel once you know about the whole game and shit like the overarching lore elements like that, which I'm sure you are thinking of when you factor in my argument.

We are talking about the feeling of the "twist".

A twist in many pieces of media is a point where you are immediately aware of something that completely took you off your feet.

With Bloodborne, it wasn't a twist, it was a gradual progression. You go into Byrgenwerth with the eldritch enemies already on you, the snakes themselves are monstrous beginnings compared to the earlier beast theme.

And then the game fails to really develop it.

I'm talking about the feeling you get when you actually sit there and play the game for the first time.

In my view, I just can't really understand why anyone would feel the "twist" is even that noteworthy.

Do you really not understand this? Cosmic Horror isn't all wacky geometry and squidfaces. A lot of Lovecraftian Horror takes place in old buildings, libraries and universities and old fishing towns. The halls in Mensis aren't Victorian castle shit, they're libraries filled with books about the unknowable deep and shit, and they ARE corrupted. The architecture twists in places, everything's covered in an oily sheen, vaguely damp, and there are EYES GROWING OUT OF THE FUCKING WALLS.

You actually don't know what you're talking about, and are just speaking from a very shallow understanding of the thing you claim the game doesn't encapsulate. Read some of the goddamn literature and then maybe you'll be able to apply critical thought instead of uninformed, weak opinions.

I'm purposely talking from a shallow point of view, as it emulates the experience I had with the game the first time I played through it.

I don't understand how the area and level design in Nightmare of mensis really gave the "development of eldritch themes" much value other than the brain and arguably the wet nurse at the top.

It didn't impact me very much.

Perhaps if they put some actual otherworldly shit like otherworldly, indescribable shifting sights, I would actually agree with you when you claim the transition was that impacting.

But for me, it wasn't, and I can't understand how anyone felt that nightmare of mensis was that much more alien than seeing things like the cleric beast, snakes in the forest, or gardens of eyes in byrgenwerth.

More villages, some more beasts, but they are bloody scraps now, puppets, giant beasts, spiders, and what areas do you go to after?

Another gothic town area, a scholarly building, another gothic building and a dusty ruin looking area which surprisingly might be the most alien environment in the game, a damn shame it is so utterly useless.

Honestly, the only time I've ever been bewildered in the entire souls series is the first time I stepped into ash lake.

you can't really use arcane well until late in the game. The best spells / arcane weapons don't appear until at least cainhurst or the dlc.

Don't go over 20 endurance, spend points in strength / skill based on what weapons you want to use.

I really want to make a Paladin Leeroy build with Morne's Greathammer and maybe the Golden Eagle Shield or East-West Shield, but I'm having a hard time finding armor that would suit Leeroy in DS3, much less allocating stats so I can mid-roll without having to be SL170+.

You fight fucking aliens, cosmic gods, and animals with their heads switched after Byrgenwerth. There are floating heads of eyes that make your character go insane. After Byrgenwerth your character is literally sucked into a hellish nightmare dreamscape while an apocalyptic red moon hangs in the sky.

Sorry but your statements are just completely incorrect.
>>
>>339225370
>entire storyline shifts to involve cosmic gods

Huh, because I certainly knew that right after I killed rom the vacuous spider, and then went back into Yahar'gul, another town area only now it has several amygdala's, so weird man.

And then I certainly knew that when I killed the one reborn.

The only point it resonated with me was when I got down to ebrietas.
>>
>>339225362

Yeah, maybe I should try out another weapon. I picked the threaded cane at the start and I liked it so I've just been using that the whole time. I've got plenty of blood shards so I'll have a look at what I've picked up and upgrade something else. Thanks.
>>
I enjoyed Dark Souls 3 more, but I think Bloodborne is the better game.

If that makes any sense?
Bloodborne's gameplay was infuriating at first but once I got to know it well it flows incredibly well. However I believe its boss fights are kind of lacking and level design is also rather poor, as the loot in BB consists mostly of blood vials, upgrade material, and gems. Dark Souls 3 had perhaps the best boss fights in the entire series, and even the crappy fights were still pretty decent. It also seemed to reward exploration a lot more. Bloodborne was also painfully linear, even moreso than DaS3, and build variety was sorely lacking (Im aware of this being an issue in DaS3 as well but weapon infusion adds a lot of variety as well as the ability to respec).

Aside from it being a tune with some heritage in the city, remember Yharnam is named after Mergo's mother, not really.

Since we're talking about it though I've noticed a pattern with the Nightmares you hunt in the game, Mergo's Wet Nurse, Orphan of Kos, and Moon Presence.

The Nightmare Slain message only procs once the dreamer is "killed": it's delayed blatantly in the MWN fight until Mergo stops crying and goes back to sleep, and you don't get it at all until the sweet child of Kos, that little wisp that rises out of Kos after OOK is killed, is "returned to the ocean".

The exception being the Moon Presence, which makes sense since Gehrman is already dead at that point.

It's not so much a 'twist'. You get Madman's Knowledge fairly early on. This isn't 'loredigging', this is just reading an item description. By the time you reach the grand cathedral it's clear that things aren't as clearcut as they seem, and this gets reinforced when you go to Yahargul and straight up solidified when you head to the Nightmare Frontier.

The 'twist' is seeing it how it accumulates, the overall extent of the craziness, and it's all reinforced by a strong build-up. The game's sectioned off into three solid acts, each emphasized by the phases of the moon and color of the sky.

>I wish they did more with the nightmare areas to be honest.

The biggest downside. Nightmare of Mensis is this game's Profaned Capital, and just as linear.

>So many people sell the game on the "twist" but I just don't get the big deal, it marked the point where the bosses became worse

Micolash and Gherman are great.

>>
>>339225568
You truly misunderstand the point.

I am not acknowledging factors like "knowing the greater story or lore" or any shit like that.

Because I am talking about the experience the game gave to me as I played through it, and that is where the dissonance between me and you when it comes to the supposed "shocking" eldritch transition.

>>339225609
You fight more townsfolk, in a town, only there are some big fuckers on the wall, then you fight a mass of bodies, weird, but not exactly "eldritch" especially for a series like souls, which has had horror themed enemies in the past. Then you fight slug scholars, which are weird, but certainly not shocking. You then get to mensis where you fight more beast enemies, that explode into maggots, and there is a giant thing shining frenzy at you, again the only thing I would consider overly eldritch at this point is perhaps the amygdala's and maybe the scholars, you then fight spiders, and then go through the area with puppets, and then go up to fight micolash in all his shitness, and then the stitched animals, which seem more "horror" than eldritch to me.

Mergo's wet nurse, though, that's a good boss visually and conceptually, I give the game all credit there for instilling a sense of fear.

Again, I return to frontier, upper cathedral ward with the emmisary and ebrietas, the only points before moon presence I feel the game feels truly "eldritch".

I just don't understand why people think the transition is that good.

First of all, I don't know why you constantly fail to mention the alien bosses/basic enemies, winter lanterns, brainsuckers, bug fuckers outside Byrgenwerth, and others in addition to everything you listed. Not to mention using madman's knowledge the whole game - it literally does not get any more eldritch than an item called madman's knowledge.

Secondly, I would argue that a first playthrough resonates the MOST with the eldritch theme/atmosphere, since you as the player are discovering this story, diving into the occult history of the game world, realizing it leads to aliens and shit, which again, was completely absent from any pre release stuff.

And honestly, I don't know how you thought the transition was bad when it hinges on defeating a fucked up alien spider and then completely changing the look of the game world into the otherworldly bloodmoon phase.

You honestly just sound like you have poor taste.
>>
>DS3 is better than DS3 meme

BB>DeS>DaS>Ds2>DS3

The reason I score DS3 so low is it doesn't bring any new, its short, it's unimaginative, it's essentially souls on the BB engine and some added frills. It fails to feel like it's own game within it's own universe, it's too boring and too short.
>>
does anyone else want to play bb again, but every time they get back to it they get horrifically bored by maybe like one part of the game?

I don't know what it is, I really enjoyed the game on release, and I played the DLC, and platinumed it with like 120 hours in total, and I haven't played it much since.

But every time I do go back, it just feels incredibly boring.

It's weird because with souls I can usually play through a few characters several times.

>>
>>339226087
That's not my read on it, Mensis was granted an audience with Mergo through a cord of the eye, and Mensis (Micolash) became the host of the nightmare of Mensis, an eldritch creature which was dubbed "Mergo's Wetnurse".

Mergo was being tormented by a nightmare and his harrowing cry was only silenced once you slew it, that why Yharnam bows to you if you go to her after, you let her baby to sleep.

Why the Wetnurse kept a lunarium at the top of Mergo's loft is something to chew on, why would the Wetnuse need to keep track of the moon? I think that as the ''Great Ones were sympathetic in spirit'' they (Mensis) were manipulating the moon down to the earth through Mergo's tormented crying, they needed the Moon in-atmosphere to birth the One Reborn, and the Wetnurse, again being ''sympathetic in spirit'', assisted them.

BB. At the end of the day, DSIII is ultimately more of the same. BB managed to alter the established formula on a fundamental level by encouraging offense over defense. There's less room for error without shields and fights ultimately come down to how well you can use your weapon and dodge attacks. DSIII felt easy by comparison because even if you fucked up the timing on a roll, you could just keep your shield up and power through the hit.

That's not to say DSIII is bad. It's the best of the Souls games, but BB is better than all of them.

My first playthrough impressions, and I will go by area and boss after rom.

>end up in the room to yahar'gul near the amygdala
>oh that's nice, I'm back here, but it's changed a bit
>oh look more villagers, that's good.
>oh look a bridge dragon like encounter
>there are now body carriages, that's pretty weird, but not exactly out of tone for the horror theme of the game
>there are blooded beasts, again, not really out of tone for the game,
>the one reborn, seems like a massive pile of bodies, and that's exactly what it is, pretty dull overall
>oh now I'm being teleported, that's odd
>lecture building
>oh look students that move weirdly, this is certainly kind of different, reminds me of the slimes in DaS in visual effect
>get to mensis
>oh look, a big fucking gothic building, lovely
>get to micolash, wow what a shit boss
>get to mergo's loft, this area is pretty short, the mixed enemies are pretty disturbing
>get to the wet nurse, wow that was different, very nice, but a shame the mechanics were kind of disappointing
>get to the brain bridge
>shit these enemies are vastly different to the rest of the game so far, and are probably the first eldritch thing that resonated with me in that specific way

the rest is fairly similar, meeting amygdala in frontier was pretty weird, both in that the fight felt eery, but also weird because the colours felt so muted and wrong.

Upper cathedral ward and ebrietas/emissary again, is the only real sense of utter otherworldliness I felt in BB other than the final sequence.

So, to answer this question more objectively, I quit out of DaS3 to start a new character in Bloodborne.

The answer, in my opinion, and Bloodborne. By a country fucking mile.

The very first thing I noticed when I started Bloodborne, having not played it for since the release of DaS3, is that the graphics in DaS3 are noticeably better than BB. It's only been a year, but Bloodborne has aged a bit. That's where DaS3's advantage ends.

Everything about how Bloodborne controls and feels is better. The characters movements are more animated and smooth, the controls are quick and responsive, though not actually all that "Faster" than Souls. Your Hunter runs at about the same top speed as DaS3's ashen one. However, everything swing in BB has weight and clout that simply does not exist in DaS3.

Some attacks in DS3 may knock an enemy over or smash him prone, but those are not particularly dynamic animations and are just kind of instantaneous effects. When I catch a group of enemies with a charged R2 with the Hunter's Axe in Bloodborne, those fuckers FLY.

I said the graphics are already starting to age in Bloodborne and I meant it, but the atmosphere and aesthetic of BB far outshine the drab palette of DaS3. The only area that compares is Irithyll, which for all intents and purposes may as well have been pulled right out of bloodborne.

Overall, my immediate, fresh impression of both games, one right after the other, is that Bloodborne is the superior game by a clear margin.

Not to bring up a Witcher 3 vs Bloodborne argument (I loved both games and think they both excel at what they set out to do) but why is it that whenever I play Witcher 3 I always feel like I would be having more fun playing Bloodborne?

Gameplay aside, the setting of Witcher 3 is just so "by the books" in my opinion whereas when I first played Bloodborne I was genuinely blown away with the setting/art style.

It's not Witcher 3s fault though but more rather the fantasy genre failing to surprise, every Fantasy setting looks like the same fantasy setting nowadays.....

I notice your impression completely leaves out the bloodmoon. Your main complaint seems to be that Yahar'Gul and Mensis didn't look different enough from the rest of the game. You also seem to have a very specific definition of "eldritch" in your head that you feel the game does not adhere too, especially in the visual direction.

However you want to define "eldritch", the fact is that the ENTIRE story and impetus of the game's events is about scholars making contact with alien gods. To say that this isn't directly inspired by HPL would be retarded.

Here's my take on it:

Wet nurse is a woman who takes care of a child when the mother is not available (that is the actual definition) and we can assume Mergon is the child of Queen Yharnam and Oedon (seeing as how Oedon is described to be invisible and present everywhere at the same time, and Mergo is not visible in her stroller and her/his cries can be heard everywhere once you trigger the red moon. We also know this is possible because Oeodon impregnated the prostitute on Cathedral ward too (description of the thrid umbilical cord you get from her), so it is possible for Oedon to impregnate people. Yharnam also has a bleeding stomach.

Mensis used their own umbilical cord to have audience with Mergo herself (not the wet nurse). The whole Mensis/mergo ritual was brought upo so that Mergo could be fully born, wet nurse is just there to look after her since for aome reason Yharnam can't. Your contract with the moon prescence ends once you kill Mergo's Wet Nurse AND Mergo, as the game purposefully delays the message "Nightmare Slain" until Mergo's cries stop, indicating you also slayed Mergo. For some reason, Moon Presence wanted you to either stop the mensis ritual or to straight up kill Mergo, since one of these two triggers your contract's end.

Also noteworthy to point out that Yharnam doesn't actually "bow" to you but more like falls over and dissappears, much like she does if you attack her anyways.

One thing I disliked about BB was how the clocktower had such a massive focus through a ton of the pre-release and marketing footage, and then was mysteriously underused in game.

It felt like a bit of a slap in the face when it turned out it was majorly featured in the dlc, this is unusual because souls games usually follow of an ethos of "if you can see it and it looks important, you will go there".

I think that Witcher 3 is probably one of the most organic, enjoyable iterations of a generic fantasy europe in video games. It's dark without being edgy, it's historically accurate for the period, and while shit gets dire at times, you have characters who act out of true, genuine loyalty for one another that surprises and delights me. It kicks the living shit out of other attempts at its genre, like Fucking Dragon Age Inquisition, a game so simultaneously incompetent and uninteresting that I would rather burn the disc than every play it again. Witcher 3 is a great Story.

However, Bloodborne is the better Game. It trumps Witcher 3 in gameplay, challenge and aesthetic, and the overarching plot of Bloodborne is far more engaging and captured my imagination to a greater degree. Both games are Great, but Witcher 3 is Great as a piece of fiction. Bloodborne is great as a Video Game.

>entire story and impetus

You fundamentally miss the point of the entire argument friend.

We are talking about the twist and it's effect on the player. Unless you really dig in and scavenge and connect various plot devices and events together while you are playing, I can't imagine the game will have that effect.

I was describing, as a first time player of bloodborne, how I felt the "twist" or eldritch development throughout the game, was actually relatively limp, and how I largely felt the end game areas didn't do anywhere near enough to diversify themselves from the tonality or expectations of the main game.

As I have mentioned numerous times, an encounter where I felt the game evaded this was the bosses in upper cathedral ward, its just such a shame the level design there was also very limp.

bretty awesome, but I actually enjoyed the first half of the game more, specifically the beginning. There was something so real about "the night of the hunt", that it actually freaked me out more than the lovecraftian atmosphere. Knocking on house doors, and getting replies that shunned you, and slowly watching as the day turns from dusk to night, was easily one of the greatest atmosphere transitions I've ever experienced in a game.

It's the Soul, ironically enough. Bloodborne is dripping with passion and creativity. The designers had a whole new world to fill with ideas, unshackled by the "lore" of the Souls series, and fill it they did.

Dark Souls 3, by comparison, is another entry in a franchise. Another page in a story that was finished with Dark Souls 1. Dark Souls doesn't exist as a setting anymore, it exists as a brand.

>>339228454
It think you meant to quote my post here >>339228283
I don't consider "Generic" a negative term. All art is theft after all, and I'd rather see an unoriginal concept done great than an original concept done alright. The Witcher is a setting with Elves and Dwarves and Griffons and Dragons. It's got magic and gods and kings. It's based thoroughly on european folklore and myth, and there is Nothing wrong with any of that. It's a homerun of generic fantasy.

It's just that Bloodborne took some ground less often tread, and hit it out of the park just as hard.

I don't think Mergo is dead, only aslee,p after the Wetnurse is slain. They slowly stop crying and then breath calmly, like Ludwig, the Doll and German when they're shown to be asleep, the game epathisis characters sleeping o you can recognize it here through sound alone.

Like her mother is described in the Yharnam stone, Mergo's calcified body, their "Horrific consciousness lives on".

The major difference between us is that you think the Nurse is benevolent and I think it's malevolent, and that the name is ironic, it is sustaining mergo's torment, mergo's cries, because it is a nightmare.

And the animation is different, Yharnam gives you soft bow after Mergo is lulled back to sleep.

> Unless you really dig in and scavenge and connect various plot devices and events together while you are playing

The thing is, LOTS of people do this, the storytelling is one of the most acclaimed aspects of the Souls series. Also, since the alien shit wasn't shown at all prerelease, you as the player unravel the story and come to the 'truth', exactly like the protag in an HPL story.

I agree that Yahar'gul and Mensis aren't very visually distinct. However, I feel as though the eldritch shit remains somewhat in the background, and I think that's thematically appropriate. Yahar'gul and Mensis are pocket dimensions created by humans so it makes sense that they look similar to the real world, but warped. Nightmare Frontier is the closest we get to an "eldritch" area. Moon Presence is also a hidden boss, otherwise you fight Gherman and the eldritch shit is even more in the background. But again, it's appropriate to have that shit on the peripherals to some extent - it's mostly in the lore which you didn't read.

Except I don't think it was done great at all. You almost see none of the wonders that could have be formed from the fantasy genre (Dragons/Manticores etc) and instead see the generic "Wyverns, trolls" etc instead. They did nothing new despite having source material that would allow them to incorporate actually original designs.

Outside of leshens there was not a single original enemy in Witcher 3. Unless you count the "totally not Goblins/zombies" Nekkers that have been in past Witcher games.

>LOTS of people do this

Not really, most people do it after a playthrough or two, the vast majority don't do it as they are playing through the game.

>it's mostly in the lore

Which is why, fundamentally, I didn't find the growth into "eldritch" or "twist" as some people love to lavish it as, very exciting.

I do enjoy BB's themes overall, although I felt it could have easily done with another year to focus on the pthumerian side, also known as, the content that chalice dungeons were blatantly meant to eventually be, as it felt like they abandoned giving any of the great ones large involvement with the world or motivations beyond moon presence's "potential" actions, at the expense of having a pthumerian labyrinthian city underground to develop a history that the player can learn through the environment.

BB's story is absolutely at it's best when it was focussed on the birth and implied split at byrgenwerth of the various factions in the game's lore.

I was disappointed that it took the dlc to remedy a lot as well.

Lovecraft is pretty fun, if you like similar stuff he's definitely enjoyable and not a very difficult read. Most of his stories are pretty short.

>Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath

and lots of other good ones.

Not him, but covenants didn't work and had no point
The lack of equipment options wasn't really an issue, but felt scant compared to DaS/DeS
PVP had no point (see covenants) and was very samey because limited magic/weapon options
like 90% Dog bosses that fight very much the same (and frankly play like DaS dog/rat bosses)
Werewolf transformations were a huge part of the story, but the mechanic didn't work for player characters at release
Chalice dungeons seemed like a good idea, until you realized it was the same 4 rooms over and over...

I really liked it, and the c'thulu stuff, and the way they handled their "secret" ending, but it had loads of issues.

How do you know what "most" people do? I didn't even say most, I said lots. I do, the friends I have who play the games do, and lots of people talk about the stories of these games online.

You admit that the reason you didn't find the story twist exciting is because you didn't pay attention to the story.

Also, having the great ones be more prominent would ruin them. They're meant to be forces ascended past the level of humanity, whose motivations are incomprehensible to humans. This is literally a cornerstone of the cosmic horror genre. Your comments, again, betray your lack of understanding and your poor taste.

Holy fuck. I already knew it, but watching this makes me feel it.

Bloodborne has the best fucking Soundtrack in Souls. People who don't feel like actually discussing it in favor of greentexting "It's all just orchestral scores over and over again" don't know their shit.

Bloodborne's musical talent runs the fucking spectrum from Bombastic Terror in the One Reborn, to Somber, Poignant Remorse in Gherman's theme. Laurence's theme is another example of this, along with Maria, and then you have pure adrenal terror in Moon Presence and Logarius.

Orphan of Kos is dissonant and unsettling. Ludwig is powerful and intimidating. The whole soundtrack is slam dunk after slam dunk. Even the bosses that aren't great themselves have great fucking themes, like Living Failures. It's just sublime.

I don't deny that the great ones having more prominence would have probably been handled awfully and ruined them, but the designers could have at least built a bit more around them to make them more interesting in the games world, especially with amygdala, where all we really got were the statues to build them up, they feel so limited and uninteresting compared to other souls creatures, they lack motivation.

I propose that what the developers originally had in store was for the pthumerian area to be a great store of "arcane wonder and research" which would have built up the bigger picture a bit more, and helped develop the game as a mythology, rather than the somewhat limited scope it has right now.

That's why I said the parts focussing on the actual world building in the early part of yharnam's history with the events around byrgenwerth were so interesting, I wanted more of that, I wanted BB to develop it's world more.

The DLC helped it a lot I guess.
>>
>>339230727
I dunno, I found laurence's theme to be a boring retread of cleric beasts theme, just like the boss itself apart from the third phase.

I liked maria as a boss fight as well, but I don't feel the music really defined the fight that much.

Orphan of kos had an absolutely fantastic first phase, it was perfect, but I thought the second phase devolved into a much more generic sounding track.

I prefer DaS3's overall
>>
>>339230403
There's something comfy about mindlessly tearing through floor after floor of hapless mooks until getting to the Real Shit. I'm not in love with the chalice dungeons, but I appreciate them for what they are. There are areas in DaS3 that feel like Chalice Dungeons despite being manually created areas, instead of procedurally generated. The Demon Ruins are the obvious example, but in my opinion Irithyll Dungeon came to feel more like a Chalice Dungeon than Tower of Latria. Just a bunch of little rooms tacked onto each other, after the initial two-level cell block.

I'm having a lot more fun with DS3's pvp though, and the ost and bosses were overall better than BB's, not counting the DLC honestly.

Dollars.

It was amazing, and I loved seeing how some of the ideas had developed (undead burg, giant-demon-boss-at-beginning-you-are-meant-to-die-to, Ancient Dragon/bed of chaos...) but it did feel less polished Than DaS, because of course it was.

That jail level in DeS though. Goddam. And it also had a lot more unique looking weapons and designs.

Hym, Feind, Leshen, Botchling, the various vampires, penitent, gargoyle, ice giant, djinn's

Being a boss and area focused game, I would expect BB to have better designs in that regard

Whereas, TW3 had far more memorable characters and world interactions, with better writing.
>>
>>339231012
DaS3 can hardly even take the credit for its own soundtrack. You have multiple instances that, just like Cleric and Laurence, retread an earlier theme (the correct term is "Reprisal")

Aldrich is just a more thunderous Gwyndolin theme (like the fight itself). And Soul of Cinder is just a reprisal of Gwyn's theme. Everything else just kind of blends together to the point where all that really stands out to me are the reprisals.

The only themes I can really even remember, despite just completing the game for the umpteenth time, are the themes of Pontiff Sully and the Dancer, because they're slow paced and chilling compared to "BOOMING CHOIR WITH NO REAL DIFFERENCE IN THEME OR TONE"

As much as I like Dark Souls 3, its familiarity and slight fan service moments make it feel somewhat stale. Even with all the things they brough back from Demon's Souls, it still feels like ive been there and done that.

Bloodborne was just a new game all the way around. It has that same quality that Nioh has, like I know the systems and most mechanics but the tempo and tactics are different. Like how fighting games are the same layout mechanically yet different style and pacing.

>>
>>339231651
I mean... It is, but it works with the frontal lobe as a decision making center in the flight-or-fight process. The Amygdala is generally more concerned with things like imaginary audience (everyone is watching me in this room full of people who have no reason to watch me), sex drive, and other really base fear impulses.

I don't mean to say the other poster was wrong, but I think you can appreciate it more if you know that this is unmitigated pure fear we're talking about, absent of human logic (frontal lobe) and the learning that comes with memory (hippocampus).

>soul of cinder is just a reprisal of gwyn's theme

I felt that with alrich and soul of cinder it was more justified because of how they handled the bosses,

If you listen to the aldrich track, it's a corruption of gwyndolins track, it has unusual vocals behind it, and it explodes outwards in phase 2.

The soul of cinder track's first phase is actually completely different, the second phase introduction of the gwyn motif is more of a reflection as it doesn't actually use the melody, it uses a few of the notes.

With the laurence theme, it was made worse because of the clear cut and paste job with the textures, other than the phase 3 lava part, but the subdued cleric beast feeling wasn't exactly the main problem I had with BB's ost in comparison to the other souls games.

Rather, outside of a few tracks, it felt monotonous in tone, there was tons of parts I felt just fell into the "horror/action" feeling soundtrack style, the dlc did a decent job at avoiding this, although I still found maria's music kind of disappointing, although to bring up a previous mention, I also found soul of cinder disappointing for the same reason, the music doesn't really define the boss very well, soul of cinder mainly in his first phase, where it all exists as a lead up to the second phase so they stuck with really generic bombastic strings. Anyway, back on point, gascoigne is an example of where I felt the track outside of the game was boring to listen to, it's actiony/tension building music that serves it's purpose in game, but doesn't really appeal to me on a level as a listener, if I could compare it to anything, it's how horror film makers use varying degrees of silence to build tension, it's that sort of music, you wouldn't listen to it outside or really take notice of it pleasurably outside of the game.

There were exceptions, the dlc, gehrman and ebrietas, but that's really it for me, I was pretty disappointed with BB's ost overall

Same, although I found some tracks in DS3 to be just downright awful, like Crystal Sages, Wolnir, Cursed Greatwood, and Ancient Wyvern, which is appropriate I guess, since they're all shitty fights. However there are some really good ones like Twin Princes, Soul of Cinder, Pontiff, and Abbyss Watchers that really make the fights much better. Hell even meh fights like Vordt and Yhorm have amazing tracks, which I feel are wasted honestly. The rest of the tracks are still good, although not great.

I didn't play the dlc when the game came out though.

Also, similar elements, doesn't literally mean it's innsmouth, of all the comments about fishing hamlet, this is the most obnoxious.

It's a bunch of demented fishing villagers and a slug cave, with a constant rain feeling, and the body of the great one lying on the shore.

I like the dlc areas the most specifically because of how they are absolutely so much better than the shitty nightmare areas we got with the main game. It's just a shame that fishing hamlet was kind of short.

The whole theme of stillbirth in Bloodborne really wigs me out. From what I can gather, all Great Ones in Bloodborne are women, or at the very least humans attempt to explains them better by conflating them with females for various reasons, and they are also all technically stillborn? What I'm led to believe is that a Great One invariably experiences a miscarriage every time it gives birth, and yet the "baby Great One" is still born.

Queen Yharnam is constantly depicted with blood dripping from her crotch as if Mergo had been miscarried and yet Mergo is still alive. Is the idea here that Great Ones are all in some kind of state between death and life? I.E. they are born and die simultaneously and thus exist transcendent of both?

BB is the superior game. DaS III is great, but it falls short in a lot of ways. Plot wise, BB has a superior story. I appreciate the continuation that of the DaS lore, but honestly, I didn't feel like it added much of anything, and some parts came off as really convoluted and poorly thought out.

DaS did an excellent job of minimalist story telling; DaS III however, just felt like they were blatantly leaving things ambiguous for no other reason than its own sake. I would have like to have seen them instead expand on the Lore in DaS and gone into further detail with the world, rather than just, "Oh there were some gods, and then these new guys showed up, oh also there's multiple worlds and shit now." It felt very weak and at the end of the game I was very unsatisfied.

BB was a completely fresh experience, and although it was much more in your face kind of story telling, it still did an excellent job of leaving things just vague enough that the world felt very deep and mysterious.

Gameplay wise, I don't think there's much a contest. There's definitely more weapons in DaS, but many of them felt like mostly copy paste movesets of one another. BB had far less weapons, but each one felt very unique in it's own right and offered playstyles different enough from each other to keep things interesting. I also found the boss fights in BB much more interesting and intense.

DaS III, the boss fights didn't really come across as memorable, and some were downright dull, having to use the exact same spin and roll strategy just like the others. It felt very lacking, and we didn't seem as progressive as BB. I understand that they were wanting to keep the traditionalist DaS approach, but honestly, I wish they hadn't.

Finally, multiplayer was way more fun in BB. Even with summons, the world felt very punishing, and there was far more ability for invaders to set traps and interact with objects in the world; such as the gate in Cathedral. <c>

There was a real sense of accomplishment being able to get through areas in BB, even with friends. In DaS III, I didn't have that; it just felt like I was blatantly steam rolling through the game. And yes, I am aware you don't have to play co-op, that's a perfectly good argument; however, I still enjoy the ability to play with friends and other people, but it does not mean I necessarily want the game to become easier in doing so.

I also came to very much appreciate the bell system, rather signs. Although I did miss seeing signs on the ground, I felt like that system created a scenario where now people just summon in one or two places; either at the bonfire or at the boss gate. BB's system was more enjoyable to me in that you rang the bell and you never knew where a phantom might pop up at. That was very exciting to me.

Finally, BB was much more balanced in terms of builds. I don't want to delve to much on this, because From will most likely get to patching it eventually, but I don't like how in DaS III we see the same 1 of 4 meta builds throughout the game. It gets old, and makes invasions not fun. Not to mention the excusable amount of bugs for online play.

I disagree about the bosses, I thought twin princes, sulyvahn, champion gundyr and nameless king were far more memorable than anything outside of the dlc.

I also disagree about the "minimalist" story telling.

Both DaS3 and BB were good at giving the player hints at to what was going on in the areas.

In high wall, the winged knight corpse has lothric knight spears and swords in it, the only living winged knight is surrounded by tons of knight corpses. In the castle, the last line of soldier's isn't there to defend the princes from you, they are there to defend from the golden winged knights atop the archives. In the castle, there is a small room, a base for the angelic knights of lothrics faith, in the twin princes room there are tons of feathers, I wonder why...

In smouldering lake there is a giant ballista and across from it there are tons of demon corpses, the are black knights scattered underground in the trench chambers ready to defend from the demons. The old demon king is surrounded by corpses and is almost dead when you get to him, why? Because it's an effect to add to the whole story of smouldering lake, it's a war site.

In farrons keep, the ghru are darkwraiths are trailing to the keep, you wonder why they are there, and why the ghru are ready to attack them, you later learn the ghru are descendants of the abyss watchers and the abyss watchers are rising in the keep, it all adds to a sense of "realisation" to the world.

I vastly prefer how dark souls 3 handled the four lords, because they felt alive and living and active in the same time as you, rather than feeling archaic and dated like dark souls 1, where you felt like someone disturbing the dead.

Multiplayer is the last point I would disagree with you on, in dark souls 3 you have tons of little things you can do, all the variations in rings, whereas bloodborne's runes were incredibly dull by comparison, the more interesting, if not as good as 2's covenants, and the superior invasions
>>
>>339235217
I thought Bloodborne's extremely limited arsenal of weapons was lame at first, but honestly it's an issue of quality over quantity. Literally all the weapons in Bloodborne are fucking cool and fun to use. Finding and experimenting with a new weapon in BB feels substantial, rather than the experience of finding a new straight sword in Dark Souls, seeing if it has better stats/scaling than the one you're holding, and either equipping it if it does or literally never using it if it doesn't.

>>339235867
a big problem with bb's weapons in my opinion, is that the ones before the dlc were sometimes kind of underwhelming.

I think people really should factor in the DLC's importance when it comes to BB, it changed so much
>>
>>339235217
Weapon diversity in Bloodborne is fine. It's quantity you're thinking of.

Having 10 different greatswords with minor variations of the same moveset =/= diversity. Having 5 different Katanas with the exact same fucking moveset with the exception of a single two-handed R2 (still an overhead slash) does not fucking equal diversity.

Bloodborne has a couple of every weapon type, and every single weapon is more than just Viable, they are exemplary of their category. It has two greatswords, one being a quality weapon, the other being the MGS. The Quality weapon is great, but shitter give it a bad name, and the MGS is subjectively the best fucking iteration of said sword in the franchise.

There are three maces, one is a lightning mace that you can buff at will for boosted damage, the other attaches, one is a blood mace that can be plunged into the user to make it larger and more powerful, and one attaches to a motherfucking buzzsaw.

There are two hammers, one of which shares an untransformed moveset with the prior mentioned Greatsword, and is a fucking joy to swing around, being my personal favorite weapon of its type in souls, and the other is a fire weapon that can be charged to grant considerable fire damage to the next strike, be it a light sweep or a heavy explosion.

There is one dagger, technically two, as it is a single blade that splits in half, and it has the best moveset of any dagger in souls period, especially when transformed.

There are two whips, one transforming into a thrusting weapon in the form of a cane, and the other being a heavy serrated cleaver.

There are two Katanas, one being a true katana and the other being a cutlass and dagger combo that function like a katana.

There are a few Saw weapons, ostensibly Curved Swords in category, and each has a unique moveset and utility.

I could go on an on and on, but the point remains the same: Bloodborne has build Variety and Quality. Quantity is unnecessary.

Yeah, but what exactly is meant by "ascent" here? Is it like an ascent beyond the physical plane or something to that effect? Did Rom or Amygdala also not "ascend?" Or is the supernatural, dream settings in which you encounter those two indicative of them having ascended whereas with Ebrietas you don't actually need to teleport to any other "plane of existence" to find her.

I'm not really into the rakuyo's design, I think it would have been better served if they went full twinblade/dual katanas.

As is the transformation animations look awkward and flimsy, the way your hunter jerks their arms about to plug and unplug the dagger. Like they could have riffed on the Blade of Mercy's slick animations and interlocked the handles and have them slide apart, instead of having to jam them together.

I mean, that is your opinion and I respect that. I would definitely agree with you that of the bosses you named, those were definitely the best ones in the game (except Sulyvahn, which I felt was too familiar to Mergo's Wetnurse).

And I'm not denying the fact that the are definitely some very great world building tools in and hints in DaS III. I just felt over all, the story didn't really expand on much that we didn't already know, and any new elements they added on didn't feel developed enough. More like, they thought of something that was a good idea, but didn't do much with it other than place a few tid bits here and there. As an over arching story though, I found it fell short to what I was expecting.

I am going to personally disagree with you completely on the multiplayer, especially the rings. I find that the rings are often times, far too overpowering and just create the opportunity for cheese builds. For example the one ring that makes it so your rolls are all but invincible is a stupid idea, and never should have been put into the game. I prefer mechanics that alter your characters' ability by the slightest amount. Just enough that there's a difference but it's not necessarily a game changer unless you use it properly. For me, the runes in BB did just that. They were powerful enough to feel interesting, but weak enough that they weren't game breaking.

I also don't feel that the covenants were vastly that interesting. It's basically just 4 ways to invade, and nothing else. It's also pretty lame that we're now a month after release and they still don't function properly.

I'm also very confused about the summoning invading system they chose concerning passwords. Being able to summon your friends regardless of level, is all well and good, but if you are going to take that route; why not just do it with all forms of summoning and invasions? If you have the ability to adjust stats and normalize levels based on the host, why not all then?

I don't know, man, I thought the bosses in BB were pretty easy. Bosses would have a shit ton of health, but if you timed your shit right you would land a visceral and take off a good chunk each time.
>>
>>339236952

The reason why BB bosses had more hp than DS bosses is because you can chain so many attacks together and build up 4/5/6 hit combos in the time it takes to hit twice in DS
Also talking about NG+ it was really weird how the bosses up to rom had insane HP boosts but then rom onward had normal NG hp

goddamn yes
love that DaS3 brought back many of my DaS2 favorites, not all though

>Area design:
>ds2dlc>BB=DS3>DeS>ds1>BB
in general I might agree, but I think Central Yharnam and Boletarian are my two favorite areas in the series

>Graphics:
>BB>DS3>DS1=/=(variable)>DS2>DeS

I went from DaS3 to BB and BB hurts my eyes 2bh. Blurry, sub 30, and motion blur. Looks pretty but I feel like I can't truly appreciate it with all the limitations.
DaS3 is crisp and smooth, but the environment seems less detailed than BB.
>>
>>339237085

I only bought vial at the end when you could easily afford buying them at the start was pointless since there was always an enemy nearby which dropped 2 per run
>>
>>339237110
if they had the balls to do it I would have loved to have seen a boss that is only damageable by visceral attacks
>>
>>339237085
There are three major flaws with the vial system:

1. Newer players, unfamiliar players will probably have to resort to farming, and enemies later in the game seem to drop vials less and less often, whereas some bosses later in the game are going to give players even more difficulty, especially at the early stages, this requires players go back to mindlessly farm, ruining the early game's pacing massively
2. By the point you are ready to start buying them, you spend a good portion of the game sitting there with that thought looming over your head, which kind of makes the game less enjoyable as the everpresent tedium between managing upgrading stats and buying health merges into eachother, and also once again ruins pacing
3. It's fundamentally a worse system than estus, if bloodborne just made up some bullshit like putting an abandoned blood shop/cart next to every lamp they could have at least justified the vials refilling on every death.
>>
>>339229357
>Superior Blizzard gives you infinite stamina once you have 3 adrenaline charges. Using that fact, together with Adrenaline Burst (Signs now generate adrenaline charges) you can cheese your way through the final boss, as well as many of the other encounters.
Well, that seems justified by the RPG mechanics.
>>
>>339237085
Yeah, you can buy them and it's fucking stupid and arbitrary. There's literally no reason I should have to drop everything I'm doing and wait through an almost minute long load screen to warp back to the fucking Hunter's Dream and spend my Blood Echoes getting the stupid things back. It has nothing to do with "forethought and planning," it's literally just a waste of time that adds nothing but small, nibbling tedium to an otherwise well-paced experience. It was a stupid ass design decision.
>>
>>339216546
This, basically the same, Bloodborn is just more agressive / easy. Loved both games, can't wait for the Das3 DLC.
>>

Its not really desu, R1 spam was you greatest friend since it killed bosses far faster than going for a visceral and led to them sometimes

>>
>>339237624
this

I beat every single boss other than logarius, where I timed the 2h into his back, with r1 spam for staggers and viscerals, along with parries in bloodborne

He is 100% right.

Especially with the DLC.
With Vanilla it gets a little bit closer but I still think BB wins.

And Miyazaki already went off to do his own thing so the DLC might be shit. Or not if tanimura has his shit together.

Dark Souls 2 is the PvPfag game, friendo

DkS3's PvP is pretty garbage by comparison

>making a trip JUST for phials

You're a dumbass. I literally played through the entire game without ever running out of phials, and the reason is simple:

Whenever I went back to the Hunter's Dream and bought a couple levels or a weapon or some armor, I'd spend whatever I had left on Phials and Bullets, prioritizing whichever I had less of at the moment. The farther you get into the game, the fewer enemies drop phials, yes. However, the more you level, the more it costs, and therefore the more change you have left over from any given leveling spree.

There were times in the later game when I'd buy over 200 phials at once, after completing a chalice dungeon of mid-low depth. It's fucking simple. You don't have to make trips back JUST to stock up, it's literally an afterthought tacked onto the end of a standard Cash-in run to upgrade, level, and grab new gear.

People who farm approx. 20 phials from central Yarnham instead of doing this are actually retarded and should feel bad about themselves.
>>
>>339237085
It's funny that you call it "Chug Souls" considering you have to spam-heal twice as much in Bloodborne as you do in Dark Souls considering the vials heal less than Estus and can't be upgraded in any facet but quantity. I mean, you start the game with 20 of the damn things, they're practically asking you to abuse them more than you would in Dark Souls.
>>
>>339238071

I really doubt they changed his moveset
Also everyone and their mum just poison knife spammed him
>>
>>339216467
Bloodborne has better combat, weapons, "story" and atmosphere. The bosses, too, are incredible. I fucking LOVE the setting.

Dark Souls 3 has more variety, plenty of weapons and armour especially. The areas are more varied and the bosses are interesting. It gets points deducted because they were capable of answering all the questions in the series this time around but refused to and just raised more goddamn questions.

What's that weapon in ds3 that has a quickstep as part of it's movement? The one that everyone is saying is like Bloodborne
>>
>>339238287

Soul memory was a good idea, just not implemented terribly well

thanks to SL matchmaking, DkS3 is already beginning to suffer from DkS1's "five viable weapons and three kinds of viable builds" syndrome

I can hop on DkS2 and fight twenty different weapons in a row, or I can invade in DkS3 and fight twenty Dark Sword gank squads in a row
>>
>>339238142
You're not really considering how utterly fucking pointless it is that you should even have to take that extra step of buying them at all when they could literally just auto-regenerate as soon as you warp back to the Hunter's Dream.

When did they nerf him? I just dodge towards his right arm since that's where most of his attacks come from while poison knifing because I can't fucking beat him otherwise.
>I really didn't think anyone actually wanted answers.
>That would ruin everything.
Demon's Souls and Bloodborne have very concise stories while still having plenty of interesting lore.
Dark Souls 1, 2 and 3 are the only ones that are incredibly vague for no reason.
I think the only thing I want to know from Demon's Souls is why is the Maiden in Black's eyes covered with wax.

>>
>>339238490
>when they could literally auto generate
And completely invalidate the rally system.

Putting an incredibly small value on them makes you waste them less. It encourages you to heal with the rally system.

I fucking hate the armchair game designer idea of just making it work like estus again.

>dragon just sits there, blasting his own nuts with firebreath

Aaaand this is why DaS2 is abysmal. THIS is their I idea of a dramatic fight with a dragon. Instakill shockwaves and retarded animations that make no fucking sense.
>>
>play DaS3 right after completing BB and the DLC
>still haven't found a single weapon that I actually like

BB really spoiled me. There wasn't a single weapon that I didn't like.
>>
>>339238698
DaS1 had the only good dragon with the dlc.

DaS3 is not as shit but easiyl the worst boss.
>>
>>339238532

Define "somehow" though

It's significantly deeper in terms of combat than any of the others and I enjoy it for that reason

desu comparing DkS1 and 3 to 2 is a lot lot comparing 64 and Brawl to Melee

No backstep iframes, huge parry/backstab windows, stunlock for days, no animation cancels, no reverse rolls, swaps are borderline impossible thanks to menu lag, stamina regen and equip load are de-synched so you have no reason to not just minmax everything, there's only three rolls as opposed to a sliding scale, no instant guard breaks so every new kid on the block can just infinitely hide behind a greatshield with an Estoc, etc.

Like, 3 basically took the one thing 2 did exceedingly well and said "lol nah let's do the really horrible shit we did on the first one again"
>>
>>339238698

That fight was tense as fuck in Vanilla DS2 tbf, my palms got sweaty as fuck as you got him to the last 1/3rd
>>
>>339238698

>>
>>339238764
I didn't even mind Ancient Wyvern, really. It's not a "Real" boss fight, but it's more enjoyable than Bed of Chaos. Also, the run up to the jump-off reminded me of Prince of Persia for some reason.
>>
>>339238740
All the weapons were thoroughly tested and loved, since one of the main selling points of the game was the combat - and by extension, transformation weapons.
Unfortunately medieval time periods are a bit restricted about that.
>>
>>339238898
Sinh is just a poor man's Kalameet.
>>
>>339238828
I love that comparison because I do think the people who play souls competitively are just as retarded as the ones who play nintendo party games competitively

Core combat wasn't fun.
I can't really put my finger on it. People say the weapons had a weird weight to them or invincibility frames being tied to a stat or the overall sluggishnes. Comboing felt off.
Again I don't want to say it is one specific thing since I don't know and maybe it is just the combination.

DaS2 is the only souls game I didn't go back to. And it was the core combat and the weak bosses.

Anyone who cares about PvP to the point were that is the main point for them or they suggest balancing the game around it should fellate a shotgun or go back to their ASSFAGGOTS.
>>
>>339238551
It's just a pointless and meaningless extra step, you retard. It's an obvious design oversight, a completely pointless lack of streamlining that the game gains nothing whatsoever from. What next, are you gonna defend not being able to use more than one soul at a time in the first Dark Souls? How about having to use four Humanity sprites, sit down at the bonfire, turn human, then manually kindle the bonfire three times in a row to get the full number of Estus flasks?

>>339238629
I don't understand this point at all. The same amount of value would be placed on them if they just regenerated in the Hunter's Dream. In fact, more value would be placed on them and players would be more encouraged to regen health by counter-attacking instead of wasting a vial if they regenerated only in the Hunter's Dream and didn't drop from enemies.

I guess. But DaS2 at least had power stancing and fist weapons were fun. If there were at least more unique weapon arts in the game. Every metal mace having perseverance, every club and axe having warcry (which is at least actually fun) and nearly every straight and great sword having stance is just kind of boring.

I'm a complete shitter at PvP though so my opinion is probably irrelevant.

I am so happy you are never ever going to design a game or going to have any input on a game.
You genuinely don't understand how if they worked like Estus they would loose value? You could use 20 between every lamp. Be incredibly wasteful and never use the rally system ever.
>>
>>339239093
Could you be any more of a petulant little child about this? Did a blood phial touch you inappropriately? The game uses this system. Some people are annoyed by it, other feel it's just fine.

You, on the other hand, are upset in a very real way by the very possibility that someone, somewhere doesn't share your whiny bitch opinion. Shut up or fuck off, whichever is easiest for you. I'm sick of seeing your bitchposts.
