Looking to finally join the master race, judge my first build. Will the price of the 970 drop when the new card comes out?

Also PC parts discussion.

looks good

be warned, installing windows 7 on these new motherboards is kind of a bitch, but there are workarounds.

Yeah was deffinatly gonna stick to windows 7. Windows 10 was pure aids. Is it easier on a same priced motherboard? Motherboards are probably the one component i dont know dick about.
>>
Why would you throw all that money at a 970 instead of just getting a new card?
They're not going to get significantly cheaper.
>>
Please get a better PSU. I would go for at least 650.
>>
>>339191365

get a SSD, preferably M.2

Upgrade PSU
Look into 128GB SSD as a boot drive, also Seagate is a shitty brand, WD is much more reliable
buying a 970. is dumb. The 390 is cheaper and better in almost every respect, plus the 10xx series is just around the corner. If you wait a couple months all Nvidia cards will drop in price once 10s hit.

I just checked, it isn't at scan but most everywhere else it is. You also picked EVGA which is pretty low tier for a manufacturer.

390 blows 970 away on DX12, it is equal to or better than it on most other games, has 8 gigs of Ram for mods and whatnot and will not suffer from Nvidia's penchant for gimping past cards. 390 is better than 970 in every respect and even at scan you are looking at maybe 20 pounds more. With all the info available I don't understand why anyone would pick a 970; you're better off going really skimpy and getting a 960 or bumping up to a 980 in a couple months when the prices drop after 10 series comes out

It's a pretty good budget PC if you plan on gaming. I doubt GPU prices will drop.
Btw, this is mine I just ordered, what do you guys think about it? Going to buy 1080 or 1070 when it comes out (consumer versions).

>>339191581
Why is it hard to install Windows 7? If I use my old hard drive (with Windows 7 installed already) should I have any problems?
>>
>>339192369
Be warned, the 970 is the most likely to age worse than any other card with that 3.5 problem. Even a 960 4gb might end up a better purchase.

Swap the Seagate out for a WD Black 1TB as it's better and cheaper.
Do you have any more room in your budget?
The 960 is going to cause you a lot of grief.
>>339193012
Looks alright, though you might want to look into where we are with HDD failrates vs storage amount.

And won't do your CPU justice.

There's no reason for Skylake unless you absolutely need DDR4.

4790k is cheaper and is better in most things than a 6700k.

Had this here card for 3 years. It has served me well so far, though my performance in ARK is barely playable. Been looking into upgrading.

Any suggestions?

You should clean your room and pc if this is the case.
>>
>>339194006
>though my performance in ARK is barely playable.
It's like that for everyone.
ARK is a bad game both technically and subjectively.

>Any suggestions?
Budget?
Time period you'd like to upgrade in?
>>
>>339194006
What resolution do you intend to play at?
>>
>>339193278
>HDD failrates vs storage amount
Failure rate isn't that bad on Toshiba, at least not on 3TB or comparable. I also have an old WD drive, but it's only 1 TB. I will mostly store huge new games I play here and there on new HDD or maybe some stuff I'm not afraid to lose if it does fail completely (which I doubt it will)

>>339193628
>>339193783
Stock isn't fine in my case though, even on my older PCs. I live in Austria and while it's not really desert hot here it does get up to 40 degrees outside, plus 2 PCs running my room it can go even higher. And the worst part is that it feels tropical and wet, so I have trouble breathing. My PC, even with after market cooler, gets really really hot (up to 80 degrees since base temperature rises to 50 or so).

So depending on where you live, you might get a better cooler.
>>
>>339194117
Stock coolers are not going to give you good OC'ing.
Anyone interested in OC'ing should buy an after market cooler.
>>
>>339194226
>at least not on 3TB or comparable.
Ah, well then you're fine.
I just remember when the rule of thumb was to not buy anything over 2TB because they were still fairly new and failure prone. So wasn't sure where we are now.

>>
How much is a 970 realistically going to go down by?
What about for AMD cards?
>>
>>339194006
I upgraded my 6850 with a 7850 many years ago.

It don't run games on ultra though but it give me 200-300 fps on CSGO and I can play every console ports there are with good framerate, provided you lower the settings a bit (no AA, low shadows, the usual suspects).

Crazy to think I could still be using the same card 5 years from now, seing how graphics has been stagnating.
>>
>>339194151

It is pretty poorly optimized. But I have friends who run it well.

Aiming for 300$ maybe? Don't have a lot of income right now. Might have to change PSU too. Forgot what the wattage was and the only way to check is to open up.
>>
>>339194261
Already said that it wasn't good for OC. No one can argue that.
>>
>>339194339
It goes up to 6 TB, but I saw some people not recommending above 4TB, so I picked 3TB which seemed more stable. So with my old HDD and SSD I have around 4200GB which is more than enough.
>>
>>339193310
Yeah that is cheaper thanks. Could probably go with a 970 instead.
>>339193310
SSD in the same capacity seem to be a couple hundred more, so I think I'll stick with the hdd.
>>
>>339194261
>after market cooler are only for OC
I despise OC and I own a Noctua on every PC I had the past 10 years, just for the comfort it bring.

OC are very much like SLI/Crossfire: made for retards.

Then the highest AMD you want to go for.

Sapphire 280's are ~320 right now.
>>

>>
>>339194751
>OC are very much like SLI/Crossfire: made for retards.
Wow, it's like you tried once, without reading up on it, failed and then swore it off because it didn't just werk.

My 4790k from 4.0 to 4.9 was a huge jump in everything.

I do agree SLI/CF is shit right now.

>>
>>339194819

Alright I'll look it up.

When it says "System Requirements : 500 Watt Power Supply is required.", does it mean the card uses up 500, or does it include consumption by other parts?

280s are about ~250 though
>>
>>339195796

Alright cool. Think I have around 700 on mine but will definitely have to check before buying.

If you're still willing to help, I got had an issue I want to discuss. A while ago I bought 2 extra ram sticks, 4GB each. I already had 2x4GB in there, figured I might as well fill them up. I tried to buy the sticks as similar as the ones I already have. Once I put them in, I had a lot of BSOD problems though. Couldn't quite figure out the problem, but removing the new ones fixed it.

The new ones are 1600MHz. If the old ones were of a different number, could it be the cause of my issues?
>>
What cards are the same size as a 7870?
>>
>>339196097
Mixing RAM is not fun.
Most likely you have different timings, which in most cases shouldn't be a problem as they will just default down to the lower of the two.

But it's still finicky as fuck.

My advice is to just buy a second set of the better pair.
>>
Is GTX970 a good card? What about R9 280?
>>
>>339196316
lower being the higher timings of the two which are worse than lower timings*
but you got what I meant.
>>339196381
970 is fine for 1080.
280 is also fine now.
>>
>>339196381
970 is pretty good for its price.
I'd wait at least for the 1070 to come out, before I'd buy a new card tho.

Seems to be a popular card. Sold out on all my Canadian hardware websites.
>>
>>339197223

Is this worth it?
My PC of 5 years died recently, and I'm in the market for something new. Was going to go GTX 970 SLI but then the 1080 got announced, and given what I've heard about the 3.5gb issue.

Anything I should change? CPU maybe?
>>
>>339197223
get the 380 or 380x instead of the 280, I snagged a 380x for around 312CAD about two months ago.
>>
>>339198167

Whatever you end up getting, if this is the price range and you only want a Skylake i5, I greatly suggest getting a minin ITX mobo and a smaller case.

Huge towers are a pain if you aren't filling them with HDD's, SLI and watercooling. You only get one PCIE slot, but I don't think you're going to need more than one.

You can get some portable cases if you go mini ITX. Can sit in places a console usually would. They can also look badass.

If you are not playing on 1440p or higher the 1070 is overkill.
Wait for the new AMD series and buy the R9 390 follower, it will be more than enough to max everygame on 1080p.

You can go mini ITX and NOT use this case. It was just a suggestion.

It's pointless going for a cumbersome full tower if you aren't going to use it fully.

From these specs you're essentially building the kind of second 'media center' PC experienced builders make for their livingrooms.

Double check to make sure your motherboard supports the DDR4 ram your buying, that site fucks up it's compatibility a lot.

Water cooling is a meme. Just get a Noctua NH-D14. Much simpler.

I'd really recommend getting a 250GB SSD Evo, and then getting that shitty 1TB HD later. There's really no excuse for running your OS and games on a HD now. SSD outperform them fucking spectacularly.

Aside from that everything looks great. If you need help building when all your parts come head to the Stupid Questions threads on /g/. Everyone is glad to help.

I would seriously reconsider the 970 since new cards are already about to drop, if u need to buy now just use integrated graphics, change seagate to wd, toshiba or hgst, psu is kind of iffy I recommend sticking to better brands http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-2547993/psu-tier-list.html aside from that it looks pretty good
