I save my shift for escapes or ambushes on the backline sniper or support. I use my hover to get to high places and to get a good flank. It's so much effort though to do little damage.
Like, even in close combat, her rockets do self-damage so she's at a huge disadvantage. To flank, you have to go through these small corridors and sideways in most maps.

i feel like it's harder to do well with pharah than it is to do well with TF2 Soldier.
Pharah needs direct hits, has a long cooldown on her "free rocketjump", has as much health as most other heroes. and has to deal with being a slow floaty air target on somewhat open maps against snipers that charge to max damage in a second and almost kill you with a body shot.
TF2 soldier has more health and is a little bit more complex, but i feel like every noob can be a useful soldier, but being useful as pharah is a little harder.

Higher airspeed would be perfect. Specifically when strafing.
Pharah is great for exploiting a weak point or ambushing, but she's not going to be reliable there killing niggers (unless her ult is up) like McCree or Reaper, or really any of the attack heroes.
So a problem you'll run into is having a couple of sustained seconds of harassing a group, doing some damage, but then you have to relocate, and unfortunately she isn't very quick. If I could use her boost to strafe right/left or even land quickly, it wouldn't be a problem.
Can I get some genuine opinions about this game? I played TF2 since the beta and a bunch of us got really good at it leading to some fantastic games in its heyday: does Overwatch have that potential?
What I see looks like a watered down TF2 with 'press to win' special moves and slow firefights because people take too long to die outside of said special moves.

If you think Winston is useless in quick play, you have no idea how to play him. He's not Reinhardt, his job isn't to sit on the front lines and soak of damage, his job is to leap on to whatever high value target he wants and shove his monkey dick in their mouth. His kit is literally design for him to single out supports and ensure they absolutely die, with him escaping afterwards a complete possibility if his leap is off CD.

You think his shield is the worst because you're playing him like Reinhardt, regardless of what you say. It doesn't exist to soak damage, it's to block fire while you isolate and deal with supports, which is does better than any other shield in the game. His ult complements the rest of his kit perfectly: its about disruption, not hitting Q and wiping out the enemy team. You're supposed to use it as a means of forcibly dividing the enemies attention; they either try and kill your teams dps, or deal with the giant monkey smashing your supports into the ground.
