I don't disagree with your main point but this isn't true. The cosemetics are all fairly good.
Most of them are just weak ass recolours, so that doesn't harm anything. And the actually decent ones are high quality, fun or interesting.
They're certainly not detrimental in the way hats ruined the aesthetic of TF2 (since OW doesn't have such an aesthetic to go in with, it can be a little more flexible).
Mako Roadshark and Mariachi Reaper are just the goddamn best.

The loot boxes in Overwatch aren't worth buying. The sprays/lines/poses are useless garbage that serve no purpose even as far as vanity goes and the skins are neither rare nor special.

There are two skins for each character basically plus a billion recolours. So that's 42 skins + 42 billion recolours. Then there's highlight intros that are almost as cool if you get it for a character you like.

Call of Duty Black Ops 3 is priced $60, has $50 season pass and has micro transactions where you pay to buy boxes with a random (close to 0%) chance to get a weapon with different mechanics, which impacts gameplay pretty hard. Chances are so low, that $1000 worth of cases sometimes gives you 0 weapons or some shitty melee weapon skin.
Next COD features MW4 remastered, but you can only get it by buying a $100 bundle. And they BOTH are probably have season passes and micro transactions with skins.

It all comes back to Blizzard's fault though. They started this all the way back in WoW.
WoW was (and is) a full priced subscription based MMO and yet they still snuck in extra paid microtransactions back in WoTLK, starting with the sparklepony.
There was a small outcry, people had paid for the entire game, wtf was this? But more than that it was a fuckoffhuge success, their servers actually went down from selling too many of those horses. So they ramped it up, selling more and more cosmetic stuff in WoW. Pets, mounts, even gear (without stats) for transmogging.
And no-one complained because it was all cosmetic and we were only scared of them selling P2W stuff (back then the big fear of microtransactions was P2W, something that's never eventuated).
So Blizzard saw that and has built on it ever since.
They must be kicking themselves they never added skins into SC2 and had to remove the D3 RMAH (which they took a cut from).
