Your PC rig should have an SSD. If you're using an large capacity external, your SSD can be as small as 50gb, just enough for your OS + whatever applications you need on your desktop; and those are pretty cheap.

Externals are easier to maintain for cleaning out dust and whatever bullshit. It's also convenient if you store a lot of films, or if you use massive applications for 3D rendering or 4k resolution film editing and shit like that. It's a safer way to use HDDs for storage.
