As compared to Xillia 2 and Graces, where would you rank Hearts R in terms of combat?

Hearts R isn't bad but I'd sooner put it closer to Graces than Xillia 2, let alone better than it.
Xillia 2 is the only entry to ever make me think "Wow that was a good game" instead of "Wow that was a good Tales game".
Made me wish Xillia 1 didn't even exist.
You can't really compare the battle systems linearly like that, because they're all very different. Hearts R is a lot more open-ended compared to ToX2 in the sense that there's not really an execution requirement and you don't need to worry about routing your combos, and Graces isn't a combo-heavy system.
In terms of general combat balance, ToHR has a god awful difficulty spike in the post game dungeon that makes it a pain in the ass to get your foot in the door on your first playthrough, but other than that it's fine. I'd argue it's a lot easier than ToG (in a good way, since ToG had awful balance all aroundkilling field), and easier than ToX2 (in a preferential way -- Xillia 2 required knowledge of the combo systems on higher difficulties).
It all boils down to preference.

Pretty good. Countering is a nice system. In terms of 3D combat I'd say it goes:
Xillia 2 > Graces > Vesperia > Hearts
It's really good for a handheld game, but average at best for a Tales game.
You master the battle system pretty quickly and there's a lack of artes. The combat doesnt feel like it has any weight to it either. Kohaku has some fun combos though. Robot dude too, I forgot his name.
Hearts R's combat is better than Xillia 2 and Graces f in my opinion.
But that doesn't mean Xillia 2's and Graces' combat systems are bad. They're all good, I just prefer how Hearts R's combat doesn't feel as limiting as the other two. Reminds me more of the Team Symphonia combat systems, which were awesome in Abyss and Vesperia.

If you want an actual explanation, Xillia 2 having reasonably good gameplay doesn't make up for a half assed story and reused assets. If that counted, Graces would be the Goddest of Goddest tiers. Meanwhile, Tales of Destiny has a rather cliche story and okay gameplay.
Tales of Phantasia was good for its time, but no fucking way it has better gameplay or story than Symphonia, which is abysmal that it's at only okay tier. Rebirth is also kinda meh and Hearts should be in a decent tier, not great. Tales of Xillia should be in okay tier, especially considering not that bad is essentially okay and should just be bad. Zestiria wasn't even THAT bad.

Xillia 2's gameplay is way better than reasonably good. Shit's actually amazing. And the story has some of the most emotional moments in the entire series. The recycling argument doesn't mean the story itself is half assed, because it isn't.
Destiny's gameplay is the best 2D in the series hands down, and is arguably better than some of the greatest 3D ones too, but it's not really fair to compare the two styles side by side. We are talking about the remake, right?
I think the biggest disconnect here is your high value of Symphonia. It has the weakest 3D combat, and the story is really nothing special, I would argue it's more cliched than Destiny's. Okay tier isn't even an insult, I unironically don't think there are any bad (mainline) Tales games, I genuinely really love them all. That's why not that bad tier exists, because they aren't that bad and are still better than a lot of other games

Hearts R's combat starts off okay, but then gets really fucking good, until you reach the one point near the beginning of the endgame where you have so many Artes to choose from and so much TC and TP that the combos practically run themselves. It gets to the point where it's fun to watch and it looks like you're pulling off some sick combo shit from the other games, but in your hands it feels like the game's doing the entire thing for you and you don't need to time shit outside of the occasional Guard Counter. Overall though I'd say it's one of the better ones.

Abyss is pretty much love it or hate it in terms of its story and hasn't aged that great gameplay wise, much like Symphonia but without Symphonia's excuse of being the """"""first"""""" """"""3D"""""" Tales game.
Vesperia is another case of "No Export for U(SA or Europe" which can turn people off since they might not want to pay for an incomplete version despite the fact that at the price it's going for now it's damn more than worth it.
I haven't played Graces f yet and I can't answer why no one would like Xillia 2 or Hearts R unless they just flat out don't like the overall Tales of style of gameplay.

The only tales games that I hated enough to not finish were Legendia and Tempest. Zestiria was the first time I didn't jump right back into a NG+ because is was lackluster in a number of ways, but even that had its moments. Overall I've enjoyed almost all of the games in some capacity.

Can someone explain to me why Tales of the Abyss is loved so much. The story is very good and I enjoyed the characters but around half way through the game all you do is run back and forth between the 4 same towns. It gets extremely repetitive.

Xillia 2's gameplay is pretty good, not nearly as good as Graces. The story is okay but falls apart with the silent protagonist and strange themes that don't have much to do with what Xillia seemed to be about. The character sidestories are nothing special and the timeline plot was woefully underused and used nearly only for fanservice. Literally. They introduced Alt Milla only to make a tsundere Milla.
Destiny's gameplay is pretty good, but the story is weak and definitely doesn't make it God tier.
Symphonia, considering it was early, has pretty good combat and the story is at least rather well plotted, with a good villain and a good protagonist story. The plot at least makes sense. Meanwhile, Vesperia, which you put in god tier, has an awful villain and falls apart in act 3 while throwing out the ACTUALLY interesting vigilante story.

The difference was, Mithos was portrayed as irrational. That was the point of the villain. He was a foil to Lloyd and one of the only actual villains that I could believe when he talked about the path that Lloyd chose not to follow.

Graces TP system is genius and focuses on actual combat instead of flailing about. The partner system in Xillia was never to my taste.

Even before that, any game with the synopsis feature would allow you to mash through dialogue and cutscenes and then skim the synopsis for a general idea of where you need to be headed.
I'm not saying that I play like that, but giving a shit and sitting through the story of a tales game is generally not required.
Plus, since Tales stories are mediocre at best, you really aren't missing anything.

Actually, RPGs are the one genre where yeah, the storytelling and characters do make a significant impact on the quality of the game. That's why they have the name role-playing games to begin with, and why they were the only genre with story even back when games almost never had story. Well if you paid attention then you'd know that the one who were truly planning on Luke nuking Azeriuth wasn't Van, but rather Duke Fabre, King Ignobert, and Mohs. They wanted to use Luke as a sacrifice in order to start a war with Malkuth, which they knew that they would win (because the score said so). This is why they order Luke to drink the poison when and Natalia speak to the king. So in order to protect Asch, Van created Luke to take his place and die.

Emil is an awful protagonist, Marta's only character being she wants his dick, the bad story, etc.
The gameplay is stupidly broken, Emil can turn into Yuri tier and has stupid endless combos due to them making the accelerate skill. Pretty much making the other party members worthless if you can infinite combo. The symphonia cast being level locked, also making them useless and moot.

Asch gets even more annoying when you realize that none of his complaints make sense. He blames Luke for stealing his life but he was essentially being raised to become a sacrificial lamb if he had "kept his life" it would have ended when he was 17. Then there's also the fact that nothing was stopping him from going back to the manor, in fact it would all to easy for him to out Luke as a replica and people would most likely believe it, and thrown out Luke since they didn't want to deal with raising him anyway. In fact after Van is defeated the people in the manor out right say that they prefer Asch because he's the original.
If anything Asch should be thankful for Luke, because if not for him, Asch would have died at Azeriuth or maybe even before by way of Guy's revenge.

I usually try to find the best TP food recipies and use them exclusively, I just ignore all other recipies.
They should make it like Monster Hunter where you can load up your individual characters with as much food as you need without limiting you to one dish for the whole party. This should also be balanced so that the same effects don't stack and ingredients you can buy and keep are more limited.
