It was very different from what you know now because 4chan was a different place entirely. When it was created in 1989, 4chan was used as a place to discuss and trade rare snail shells (hence the rarely used nickname for 4chan, 'slime town'). /v/ actually stood for Venomous, as in shells from poisonous snails. Of course, this all changed when Christopher Moot bought 4chan in 1997 and restructured it into the anime themed image board you know and love. Most users left after the buyout, but a few "oldshells" still frequent the site.
