In the case of this game, mods.
The default battle max battle sizeis 250, I have it set 600 with mods.
Some mods are also fairly demanding because of texture and shader changes.
A little extra breathing room in terms of power never hurts, especially with the occasional actually demanding game.

This actually kind of happened with The Last of Us on PS4. The PS3 veterans fucking raped the new guys horribly who didn't understand the game, and it's still kind of bitchy to get into as a newbie. If you weren't there in the first few months of PS3 version, it's kind of a bad time. I'd imagine it's worse with this kind of game by a large margin.

Yes. The naval battles are pretty much just like Sid Meier's Pirates. You can sink enemy ships or board them, at which point it switches normal M&B battle gameplay. You can take cargo from captured ships and sink them or add them to your fleet. You can also raid or siege towns from ships.
