Go ahead and hate on kickstarter, I sure do. And go ahead and even dislike Bloodstained if you want to. But this picture is incredibly disengious since Mighty Number 9 and Bloodstained have been notably different from eachother from the very beginning.
Bloodstained were much more straight forward in regards to the game visuals not going to look like concept art but just a taste of the general style they're aiming for rather than the actual goal of the visuals themselves.
Which is the complete opposite from Mighty Number 9 proposed they would be able to do with the visuals.
Also, the Mighty Number 9 image on the right is a fair representation of how Mighty Number 9 actually will look / ended up looking.
The Bloodstained image however is not representative of the game. They've been making regular updates, working on models, stage assets, and very notably shaders and the results don't look anything like the image.

Also, this is coming from somebody who actually was dumb enough to back MN9. I knew the risks and knew that concept screenshot wasn't what we were getting. Yeah, I'm pissed about the final style but only because I think the gloss effects and lighting were an awful fucking choice. A simple tweak to remove the gloss and adding cel shading would have gone a long way. I still knew the concept screenshot wasn't going to be anything close to the final product. Only reason I never pulled my funding was because I only backed the lowest digital copy tier and the gameplay at least still looks fun to me. I almost backed the $60 edition with the box and shit but realized that was a retarded idea. If I had, I'd be even more pissed but it still would have been my own fault.

Bloodstained doesn't looks quite as bad outside of the shot OP posted, but even still the art style from the concept art looks so much better.
I have to wonder if they had both reached out maybe they could have licensed Ubisoft's engine that they used to make Child of Light and Rayman Origins and Legends.
From what I understand the tech they have built into that thing streamlines the process for 2D asset creation and all that pretty significantly.
