The map AI actually feels competent for once. It actually does this. I spend a couple of turns waiting for siege engines and just watching the AI orks v vamps.

Orks go their shit pushed in at were at their last hold and suddenly they pushed straight through the vamps and pushed them back a stale mate. With the orks having 1 army and the vamps multiple. the auto resolve does fuck you over sometimes though.

Also I have no idea how to counter pistoleers. WHen I try cavalry charging them they just run away. Infantry can't catch them either.

If you want anything besides Marauders you need to spend 4-9 pops per untit and at the beginning you get one growth per turn and you need 20 per population point. You can get up to 5 growth but then you have to upgrade your main building which costs you 14 pops. It simply takes hundrets of turns to get at least some good units.

Or am I doing something essentially wrong?

Yea it was pretty shitty, I still had fun shooting people with Persian archers, and some of the city maps were pretty cool.
Eh Warhammer universe isn't really needed to play any of the games, eventually you'll get the key terms and races. This is the Age of Sigmar so its basically a medieval version of the Space Marine 40k era you usually see, minus, for obvious reasons, space aliens.

Flying units say fuck you to any attempts to block them. Some like the Varghiests are legit fucking terrifying. They're slower than cav but the only way to stop them is shoot them out of the air or bog them down when they land.

Hero units are very fucking cool and each is split between Damage Dealer and Support, but each race plays with those roles.

Spells are also another amazing part. They took all those dumb magic abilities starting at Shogun 2 and upgraded them.

You can do shit like -36 melee attack on a unit or buff to 100% charge resist. You can also stack buffs on a unit, so I've had reiksguard charge into chaos warriors with over a 100 melee attack and 110 charge bonus.

The campaign features are a different story and I'm still debating if I miss the removed features or I'm glad they're gone.

The battles though have been my favorite since Fall of the Samurai. At best the only thing I would like is if the combat was slowed down a bit, because it is close to Shogun 2 speed because of the micro required.

Tbh familia if you cant get a pc game to run on your PC with even mid tier hardware, unless its truly broken, you need to learn more about your computer.
There has to be ten of thousands of different computer configurations and manufacturers, any game is going to trip a few wires. The good thing is, statistically, lots of people are going to run into the same problem. 95% of all game, or hardware issues I've been able to solve with Toms Hardware tier troubleshooting.
Not saying some games aren't shoddy, are deserved of the criticism, but its really not that common.

Because it's varied for the campaign selection. You can go traditional or modern or anything inbetween. The campaign gameplay is great and the battles are spectacle. It takes the butter smooth gameplay of Shogun 2 and turns into an expansion that can be argued as the best black powder total war.

And Rome 1 is all about just stacking Urban cohorts and Praetorian cav. Before rolf-rolling the map. But I still love that game anyways.

You can route an imperial guard unit with yari-ki. Horse-archers are hilariously good. The AI is retarded an constantly puts their gun infantry out of position. I've never had more casualties playing traditional than modern barring the first game when I was learning the ropes.

Besides, traditional just ends up being faster for me than playing a gunline. So, therefore, it's always been easier for me.

Lots of animations that have been there for many previous releases are gone: cannons and guns aren't reloaded, there aren't any killing animations at all actually...very lazy and incomplete. Pistol cavalry exist merely to annoy enemy units, baiting them out of formation or just weakening them up a bit. You can use them to bait enemy cavalry and send them on a wild goose chase while you take care of the rest of their army. You can also set them to melee mode to chase down enemy ranged units too.

Got this last night, my SO bought it as a belated birthday present and I got railroaded from my attempts to go home by a group assignment meeting.

I have no idea where these contrarian faggots are coming from, Total Warhammer is amazing its easily CA's best release in ages. its worth a buy if you at all like Warhammer or CA games.

Anyway I'm playing Dwarfs because I always play Dwarfs first in anything, my only annouance so far is did they change the way you move units with left click?

I remember being able to click and hold a unit of soldiers and then drag them and it selects them in formation and allows you to drag them to a place you want them and they would move in formation to that place.

I have no idea if I've just forgotten the key and button combination for it or if they changed it but its pissing me off when I spend like 10 minutes forming my army up on the sides and I can't move them and keep them all in their original formation and ranks as they move into the battlefield

I like having my flanks covered and I can't keep my power units on the flanks without the option to keep their formation as I move the army.

I have no idea if this makes sense at all, or if anybody knows what I'm referring to with this message.

So are town battles (sans capitals) completely gone? It was the primary advantage you got for defending and it's weird to not have it. You don't even really need to outnumber the enemy anymore when you want to invade their towns because of this.

Do encampment battles not have special maps either? I haven't fought in one yet

Lords and hero units can be assigned weapons armour and trinkets that you find in game and they can have followers that give bonuses. They all have skill trees that they can upgrade through as well. Lots of RPG stuff in this game.

I think they all start with nothing and you pick up items through battles or action. Wish regular units had a few more options to them but I'm enjoying it so far.

Hero units are hard to put down and enemy units will often flee, regroup and return. In my experience with older total wars enemy units that were fleeing were mostly considered dealt with but these ones keep coming back. Enemy mounted units will often flank as well.

Enemy troop movement in battles is a lot smarter in this game than previous i find.

Yeah, hero units are way too strong and the AI seem to be able to level theirs a lot faster. Early game (first 15 or so turns) on normal difficulty my Ork leader was only level 3 and the Dwarves attacked me with a level 8 hero and a full stack. There's nothing you can do to stop that shit, tactics and strategy don't mean shit when their lord can tank everything you throw at him purely on level advantage.

Such a pain to take Sylvania. I play as Empire and I own like 40% of the empire regions at turn 47 thanks to making confederations with talabecland and stirland and by conquering most of Midland and Ostland. Been fighting for dozens of turns with the vampires, managed to take their capital and have deployed 4 full stacks in Sylvania but they still have 3 full stacks with strong units and their corruption is fucking my armies up. As VC I have no reason at all to move into dwarf/orc lands. So that whole portion of the map is wasted for me. Same as dwarves/orcs, no reason to move into human lands. "Oh, but you can raid!" You say? That doesn't help me early to mid game. Early to mid game I can't afford to have a full stack fucking off somewhere, instead of gaining me territory.

Only gripe with the game so far. That and the motherfucking skeleton animations. Exact same goddamn animation for each skeleton.

This is my first TW game and I am not very good at it yet.

I can do well in evenly matched battles, but I cannot turn the tide in battles where the odds are against me.

Cavalry really can make or break a battle. Using cavalry has been the keystones to winning battles where I was horrendously outmatched, and if you don't keep track of the enemies cavalry, it can fuck you in the ass, especially if you keep forgetting they exist and you didn't actually finish them off.

Pic partially related, it was an amusing little curbstomp where I flooded the forest with wolf riders and harassed the tiny Emperor group before drowning the remnants in a wave of Orcs. Seeing the wolf riders weaving and rushing through the forest, bullying the mortars, general and musketeer men was fun to see.

The gameplay reason is commitment.

You can get cav in and out of fights very quickly in TWW, if those archers died instantly then the cav could just keep running and go on a total killing spree never slowing down. So the actual killing from the charge is slightly delayed, literally a few seconds after the charge itself, so that you have to commit the unit for the maximum potential kills, before you can run off.

Based on the image, Southlands has Lizardmen colonies. Other people have also said smaller Dark Elf clans already exist in the old world.
TW:W could expand the existing map south and East heavily, and just make it so factions have come in and landed on the western coast to explain Dark Elves and Lizardmen.

I absolutely don't see them adding the ship aspect of Warhammer to TWW, and removing sea battles was a fucking good decision because they were shit.

Empire+Nappy sea battles were boring and the strategy amounted to who had the ship with the most guns.

Rome 2 sea battles were just big AI messes and the idea of losing an elite unit with just one ram was silly.

I can't say much about Shogun 2 sea battles as I rarely partook in them.

Doing a coop campaign with a buddy. He's Empire and I'm Vampire Counts. Just had a 45 minute long siege taking Castle Templehof with Kemmler and an army of tier 1 and 2 units. I haven't had this much fun with a game in awhile.

GW still sells every pre-AoS model besides Tomb Kangz and Bretonnia who have been erased. Just they're renamed for copyright reasons.

So "Dark Elves War Hydra" is now renamed "Scourge Privateer Kharibdyss" because GW can copyright it.

Similiarly as every WHFB character has either been erased or ascended to godhood, their models have just become generic HQ units. Mannfred von Carstein's model is now just called a "Vampire Lord" on GW's website.

I don't think they'll keep producing them, they're trying to push the old factions away as far as possible. Every faction has since been chopped up, Empire is now "Devoted of Sigmar", "Celestial Orders", "Freeguilds", etc..

And they are slowly releasing newer more 40k-ish models to replace the older ones. This is an "Orruk Ironjaw", which is basically the new version of a Black Orc.
