Simple hook summary:
A family reunion happens on a deserted island. One by one they are all brutally murdered.
The MC eventually dies too. And is brought to a purgatory/hell where a witch taunts him, claiming to be the supernatural force behing the murders.
The MC, with his stubborness, says hes just halucinating, and that the murders happened normally, and that it definitely couldnt be magic (the MC grew up reading mystery novels)
The witch's curiousity is sparked, and tells him she will reset the events of the day, and have the family killed in other ways, ans at the end of the day the MC has a chance to explain how the family dies, without using magic as an explanation.
If he fails to come up with a logical non-supernatural explanation for all the deaths, then the witch resets the day again, and they play again. Ad infinatum
Does the MC solve the mysteries? Is he stuck in a time loop forever by the witch? Is there someone else behind the scenes? Find out1

/a/, /jp/ and partially /v/ used to be Umineko General back when the novel first started to come out, everybody loved it and they roleplayed in threads daily. After the first five VNs, some people have started to dislike the series, either for considering the truth extremely retarded or for the author's decision to handle the truth, on top of the content of those novels being pretty different from the original four.
In the last novel in particular the author pretty much insulted everybody who speculated about the novel and tried to find out the truth with their own theory, while at the same time the actual truth being a theory a fan formulated a few years before it was revealed. /jp/ was pissed. Umineko is almost always considered shitty now by them, but /v/ still seems to like it enough. /a/ likes it too sometimes.
The quality is often considered better than the updated good looking sprites because of the emotions it portrays better, on top of being sort of iconic and funny. Almost no Umineko fan minds them.

It's called umineko, the premise of the story is that the main character family and friends get horribly murdered by a supernatural witch, but he denies that witches and supernatural are things that exist so the witch proposes to him that she will undo the murders if he can explain how the murders happened using his murder mystery logic over her "it's magic, i ain't gonna explain shit" logic
It's a very interessing premise for murder mystery fan and i was totaly into it at first but you see, halfway through the story (and when i say halfway i mean like 8 hours into it) it pretty much change genre and it become more of a mixture of a fantasy and a meta plot about the nature of creating murder mysteries (one chapter is literaly dedicated to some rules to writing murder mystery that actualy exist for real) and making shit up
And i liked it, but as a murder mystery fan it pissed me off, there is never the dramatic reveal where they catch the culprit (but at least it's revealed), it never get explained how something that was super natural could have happened with real facts and so on, it's like they forgot it was supposed to be a murder mystery in the first place

The translation is kind of too literal. Because lots of japanese dialogue doesn't translate well to english. So you would end up with a lot of lines that sound very stilted and unnatural to english ears. Especially since japanese lines are writing with the japanese unorthodox grammar in mind.
