That's fucking wrong though, at least if we're talking about WCII. Read the original manual, it was still early in Blizz's life but it was a perfectly fun world and a decent foundation, vastly worse fantasy novels have done fine.
The problem isn't the setting, the problem is the people producing products with it. Don't try to shift responsibility, as if it's not their fault and it's just that the setting was bad or it's all about bandwagon or something. It's just that it's a soulless megacorp profit play with no talent or creative risk taking involved at any decision making level.
It'd be possible for someone competent to go back to the start and make a good, new Warcraft movie. The actual problem is that ActiBlizzard was involved in any real way. They have boatloads of money and a popular property, they could have had pretty much any director if they'd offered them decent creative freedom. They should have picked a director and team based on good movies they'd done already, then said
