DirectX 9 games on Windows 10 (and 8) cannot use more than 4gb memory.
It works fine on Windows 7, but Microsoft intentionally crippled DirectX 9 on Windows 10 to push DirectX 12, which is Win10 exclusive.

If you "upgrade" to Windows 10, you will no longer be able to play heavily modded DirectX 9 games, like Skyrim.
Even if you buy one of Nvidia's new GPUs, where 8gb VRAM is now the norm, you will be unable to use it.

Be warned.

They're pushing Windows 10 hard as fuck, to the point that a lot of new updates for 7, 8 and 8.1 are new ways for Microsoft to try and install Windows 10 on your computer.

My guess is, they've got plans for Windows 10 and before they announce them they want as many people as possible using the OS.

Win10 will be a rolling updates OS anon, so the "last" windows as they aim for it.

>Win10 will be a rolling updates OS anon, so the "last" windows as they aim for it.

I'll believe that when I see it, but even if it turns out true, how the fuck are they going to make profit anymore if they're not selling OSes? Clearly they have a plan, and this plan requires lots of people be stuck on Windows 10.

My guess is they're going to try to monetize people being on Windows 10 somehow. Maybe some kind of subscription fee of some sort.
>>
>>338749905
>how the fuck are they going to make profit anymore if they're not selling OSes?
Probably paid subscriptions for updates.
>>
>>338749905
Most of their money comes from business licenses, the home sector doesn't bring much profit
>>
>>338749905

Theres many many ways anon.

Ever thought how hard it would be to become the competitor of Steam?
Gog has like less than a 10% share of the market and they are the 2nd.

Well imagine that you can just "roll out" your gaymen store to all Win10 PCs at once.
Suddenly you are the biggest competitor - and they can stuff it full of exclusive games - hi gigantic and quantum shit
>>
>>338749905
>how the fuck are they going to make profit anymore if they're not selling OSes?
Make it free to home users but make businesses and OEMs pay. Plus the money they bring in from other things like Xbox.
>>
>>338750086

That is essentially how Ubuntu earns money for canonical (though when I checked a few years back ubuntu was a money pit, but things may have changed) - they give the OS away but sell support contracts and whatnot.

Funny thing is they said the same thing about Vista, and look how long that lasted.

They aren't going to make future updates free forever like they claim. From a technical standpoint it would be impossible. But the real reason will be the fact they aren't going to give up those delicious shekels from Windows sales.
>>
>>338750086

They're still losing a huge chunk of profit. If the claims of 200+ million Windows 10 users are true, and the average OS sells for like $100+, that is billions in lost profit.

Clearly they're not going to just throw away billions for nothing. They have some sort of plan in progress that will end up in them making much more profit.

Probably they'll sell upgrades - it'll be just the same OS all the way, probably gonna even copy the naming convention off Apple

There would be a lot of money saved for them if they only have to provide support for just one OS instead of several at once.

>>
>>338750291
Note that they say users, not number of units sold. Very few individuals actually buy Windows, most people either have it pre-installed on their computer or just pirate it. Most of the money comes from selling licenses to businesses. The home market is all about selling Office.

What ideal world?
Mobile all use opengl and will use vulkan.
Half of the consoles(if nintedo doesnt do a new console) use opengl and will use vulkan.
As well as macs will suport it.
Not only that, but windows 7 through 10 will support it as well.
We're not under "directx lockdown", it's just that devs are too lazy to develop for opengl, that means nothing most of the time, though as major engine makers do develop their engines for opengl, so in the end it doesn't matter. You can compare the list of games for Windows with the list of games for either Mac or Linux, they are getting bigger by the day.
I personally don't mind dx12, as it is the same thing as I said previously, but what I don't want is windows 10, I will never upgrade my win7, my next os upgrade will be to linux, the last time I gave up on linux, cause it didn't have codecs for hd video, that was when ubuntu was released I think or little before that.

Neat and logical on paper but when 99% of the relevant market is on windows, its logical to not bother with an opengl or vulkan version too.

These companies are saving money on everything and a version that brings in next to nothing is nipped into the bucket very fast.

So while Microsoft is baiting everyone with DX12 to get into their Win10 garden..... what is the competition?

I have't =gmkl;,sdfklgkldf

I haven't updated my Win7 on my desktop and laptop for well over a year now. I had it set to only notify me that updates were available and that I had to manually download them myself.

Something strange happened last month though, and I swear Microsoft pulled a lever or pressed a big button somewhere:
My desktop is by no means a toaster, but I noticed some weird slowdown watching a Youtube video. Investigating it, I saw that a process called "svchost.exe" using half of my available RAM. Worse so than Pale Moon.
Discovered the process was related to the service "wuauserv" which is responsible for the Windows Update. I manually disabled that service, and sure enough "svghost.exe" shrunk immediately back down to 10-20 MB.

The issue popped up on my laptop about a day later. Sure enough, it was the same exact issue with svchost.exe, and wuauserv. Disabling it fixed it.

My girlfriend's computer suffered the same exact issue as well. Same method fixed it.

This thread will be dead by the time I post this, but if not, can ANYONE tech-literate explain what the fuck happened, and if it happened to anyone else with non-updated Windows 7 installs?

Linux works on a lot more hardware than windows.
Most finished software works perfectly on linux, ie. it's not in a alpha.
Commercial software and games are growing on linux. Web devs have been developing on linux for ages, due to its superior server/db support.
I'm still trying to find an ide better than visual studio, but I'm finding it hard nowadays to find one that is as laggy as visual studio.

What windows is missing out of the box and will never have - screen cube, package manager, interconectivity with anything without proprietary drivers, no need for preinstallations(ie. no cluttering and shitfilling), good looks, nice community, tech-savvy community
>>
why would you need more than 4gb of ram on a dx9 game? besides modded bethesda games
>>
>>338753007
Wanna know a reason why linux will never be dominant?

Because it can't keep up with the hardware and with it's own bugs.
Nobody in his right of mind would want to game on something that is 5 years late in hardware support and needs patches upon patches upon manual fixes to function.

If i want to play i want to install the game and play, not having to dig for a fix for whatever the fuck one of 10000000 packages is doing that doesn't go well with the other.

Microsoft instead? Click->run
>>
>>338752595
Dumb gamerfag detected. Linux is far, far superior to anything else aside from maybe BSD for servers and embedded systems. Unix systems are generally better for coding and software development. Linux has bretty good equivalents to general Office software. The only thing Microsoft has is DX, which gives them superiority in CAD and games.

>This isn't relevant to the discussion.
You don't need to port your game to linux or macos in order to use opengl, opengl is on windows as well and it works fine and it's as easier to develop for it as it is for dx. Also, for games that are also multiplats - dark souls, diablo 3, etc, it means that there is already an opengl version. SC2 too.

Which it is.
And moving to another OS will also do that, because they can't support all hardware nearly as well as a company giant like MS could, because our gpu drivers aren't pushed out day 1 onto any other OS.

the most obvious are
>they monitor what you do
>they display ads based on that data
>they sell your data to companies
Also you as a non company are basically beta testing Windows 10 for the business versions. So there's a real chance there especially if you use exotic hard/software that someday and update will brick your PC. And there's nothing you can do about it because Windows 10 only listens to Microsoft, not to it's user.

We also don't know what Microsoft is planning for the future, but as of right now it looks like Microsoft has the potential to go full apple style walled garden with windows 10. So there might be some additional costs in the future, like special versions of apps for a higher price, upgrade fees, monthly fees etc etc...

If you install Windows 10, you surrender your PC and your Data to Microsoft.

Microsoft doesn't develop gpu drivers, vendors do - Nvidia, AMD and Intel.

Ideally I want to remain in w7 for a few years, then move to linux with a steamos boot or something wacky like that. As someone who games both on Arch Linux and Windows 10, here are the problems I've discovered with Linux gaming that need to be fixed before widespread adoption can happen.
>Needs more games. (This is getting better though) Wine is still hit or miss and fails at 64 bit applications.
>GPU issues with DE's, almost never plug and play. Need to write scripts to get most DE's to stop screen tearing
>Nvidia proprietary drivers dominate Linux because AMD doesn't support the latest version of OpenGL. With Vulkan this will matter less but it's still worth noting that as an AMD user you will typically be at a performance disadvantage.
>ALI/Crossfire support is virtually nonexistent. Don't even try. Screen tearing/stuttering out the ass, almost zero game support. It sucks on Windows but it's worthless on Linux. If you have multiple GPU's sell one or set up a VM with passthrough.
>Cool Nvidia/AMD features like downsampling typically aren't supported even with proprietary drivers.
>Good luck with nonstandard hardware like Freesync/gsync monitors or weird laptop tech. My bluetooth controller still doesn't work with Steam despite them saying they would add SteamOS support in January.
>Even good ports generally don't have mod support, even if they supported mods in Windows. 3rd party mods like SweetFX sort of work in Wine, but there's really no direct equivalents to a lot of popular Windows software.

Dual booting Windows 7 and 10 is easy, both have UEFI support and use NTFS partitions (which means you can share files easily) and Windows Boot Manager is good at recognizing other Windows partitions. (It's shit at identifying anything else). I'm not sure how to do VM with GPU passthrough on Windows 7, almost every guide is for Linux. UnRAID is a great paid solution but that's probably not what you want.

I'm glad someone noticed, I spent a lot of time building a PC capable of a stable 60FPS modded Skyrim.
>>338758626
I don't know what to say, I used to get massive RAM usage too. I ran around Whiterun and Windhelm (including the bridge outside for which I have a mod that adds a clusterfuck of merchants and generally knocks my PC to the ground) but it kept freeing up memory as soon as it could. At a certain point, it actually was under 0.5GB, and that was after hitting the 4.2 peak.
It must be something that builds up over time, since I spent only about 10 minutes on this and I'm not in the mood of playing Skyrim.
>>338759109
Skyrim itself actually crashes after 3.6GB because Bethesda's incompetence. What we do with modded Skyrim is use ENB to offload the RAM usage. This allows the game to go over the limit.
>>
I run a Ubuntu/Win 10 setup. Ubuntu for general computing and Win10 for gaming. I block all traffic on the Win10 install and only allow IPs on a per game basis. So it's a bit of a pain to set up for every game but i'm about as secure as you can get on a Win10 OS.

It still uses flat design and Metro equivalent stuffed into start menu instead of having it take up whole screen like it did in 8. Probably an "advertisement" in the background would suffice.

What rustles my jimmies the most is that they patched a registry key that restored normal start menu and disabled metro on windows 8 and got away with it.

I'm using Windows 10. It's alright. Looks cleaner and once you get used to it (like all OSes) functions just as good if not better. It still has a lot of shit I needed to remove, much like every bloated piece of shit OS that has come out of Microsoft. It's a shame they are doing this though.

The problem is that Chronos Group still hasn't gotten their collective heads out of their collective asses. If all games supported OpenG, we wouldn't be in this mess to begin with. Now it seems they are dead set on making the same mistakes with Vulkan.

There are no heroes left in man.

Nah, they're definitely doing it so they won't need to waste their time keeping an older OS updated, pretty sure even businesses went with 10 too.

Of course it isn't a waste of time but forcing updates like this is only giving me the urge not to update ever. I'm sure making it easier to see what people are doing is a boon to governments though.
>>
>>338751729

Because they don't want to support 5 different operating systems at the same time (Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, and 10), especially the ones that have little market share.
>>
>>338758109

Vista SP2 + Platform Update really is 99% equal to 7, you can even mod Aero to enable transparency on full screen windows. The only major feature missing for consumers is TRIM support, but you can use your SSD program to manually send the command every few days.
>>

I recently got fucked into upgrading, whatever, I thought I'd try it out, it fucked over all of my driver settings, fucked my basic controller settings and fucked my graphics card (failing to wake, bluescreens due to them moving drivers around ect) by the time I tried to downgrade it was too late, tried a fresh install of 7 then Microsoft blacklisted my Windows 7 Pro key that I bought when 7 was new, and told me I needed to purchase another key to downgrade.

The activator doesn't come with any bloat at all. Neither does the official M$ isos that you can get off a digital river mirror site, digital river being the old official windows 7 distributor online. What are you smoking?
>>
>>338756821
If you had done it six months ago you would be fine, Also all you have to do is remove the offending update(s). It takes literally 10 min to google them and remove them, but that is far to hard for you. Instead you bitch and moan about it on the internet. Windows 10 was designed with tech illiterate retards like you in mind, they install all the updates automatically because you are literally incapable of making these decisions yourself.

Blizzard is already "unofficially" supporting Linux in that they ensure most of their games run well in Wine. Don't know if that's the case with Overwatch too but WoW, HS, D3 and SC2 all run only slightly worse than they do on Windows for me. I think they prefer to keep it like this since people can still play the games and buy their card packs and whatever but they don't have to put any effort into training their support people to work with Linux and such. I agree that it'd be much preferable to make it official but doubt it'll happen until Linux gains another couple % of the market.

As for Riot I have no idea desu, I thought they were rewriting their client and all the tech they use seems like it would be compatible (assuming they're throwing out the Adobe cuckware) so it seems like a prime opportunity to port it, but I guess not.

But still, "look how that turned out" is a bit unfair, I mean we are getting games like Witcher 3, Civ 6, Metro 2033/LL, etc.. The situation now compared to just a few years ago is an incredible improvement. Before Steam, what did we have? Just a bunch of indie garbage. AAA publishers would never even consider it. The last time I remember Linux having any kind of "big company" support before Steam was like, Unreal Tournament 2004.

I'm getting a ton of calls lately about peoples computers just upgrading to windows 10 this weekend out of the blue, and had it happen to a couple coworkers and my own machine tried it as well. This whole windows 10 ordeal is scummier then hell and there's something disconcerting about how hard microsoft is pushing 10 given that windows 8.1 came out not that long ago.

which is the updates to avoid again? I'm on a fresh install of win7 and I don't want the constant win10 update shit.

I actually tried out Windows 10 just because downloading it was more convinent but Photoshop and ZBrush ran like absolute garbage in it. I was constantly having issues doing the most minor of stuff and it turns out that they overhauled the tablet interface from Windows 8 on wards and it was causing me all sorts of problems. Ever since I reinstalled Windows 7 they've all gone away, could be because I'm using a Intuos 4 but I can't imagine that would be the problem.

>No script would stop any and all that shit from running without my permission

Wrong. There is none such thing as the perfect anti-malware software. Even with kapersky and noscript you are not 100% protected from it. There are more malware writers, then there are people writing/upgrading prevention code.

You are naive.

well its not going to run if no-script doesn't allow ANY scripts to run

I'd like to see malware go through my browser without using javascript.

By selling the personal information of the stupid fucks that updated to Win10.

If you haven't updated windows in over a year and you run zero virus protection software, browser exploits are the least you have to worry about.

Educate yourselves.

>>338765779
BUT LOOK AT ALL THE PEOPLE THAT UPDATED*!

*Warning: People that updated may not have actually wanted to update at all.

well I'm not gonna get a browser exploit since firefox runs automatically and I'm not gonna get a script to run when no-script blocks ALL scripts regardless

Might want to look into uBlock. It'll give you a bit more flexibility on a case-by-case basis as opposed to just source un/blocking.
>>

Like I said, browser exploits are the least you have to worry about.

I've been using a combination of common sense, sandboxes, noscript and regular scans for the last ten years without a single problem.

The only things that would infect me are the things that would infect you too, regardless of how updated your OS is.
>>
>>338766313
most of the security updates are patches to vulnerabilities in MICROSOFT SOFTWARE like Outlook or MS Office

I don't use shit like that, so I got no problems
>>
>>338750618
Because no matter what they say it's not compatible with my laptops.
>>
>>338748623
for some reason my pirated win 7 never gets win 10 update garbage, but does get the normal updates. even though i haven't really cracked this version at all i just use a watermark remover
>>
>>338766581
>Like I said, browser exploits are the least you have to worry about.
But your original claim that I'd get a malware installed from shady websites has nothing to do with windows rather the browser itself

No-script would block any script that attempts to run anything regardless of the website

No shit. You're doing the things you should be doing to prevent malware. The only thing you could do better is regularly update windows.

And no, i do all of that as well as update, you're computer is more vulnerable than mine.

quit arguing with pajeet, one of the marketing tactics to get you on windows 10 is so-called software "vulnerabilities" in so-called "outdated" operating systems like 7

Actually the plan is to sell stuff through the Windows store. Also >>338750086

Also it saves money to have more people on one OS than have some % on 7 and some % on 8 and some % on 8.1, etc. Eventually they'll only need to support Windows 10, because it's their last release.

I'm not denying that they sell information but the average person's information is worth like $5 or something, they're not strictly going that route.

But you are forgetting all those million bajilion devices of the current and future that came with W10 preinstalled, Anon. That surely counts, right?

Oh, and let's not forget some manufacturers not providing drivers for any Windows sans 10 for their new hardware, so that even if you get a laptop without OS, you will still have trouble getting it up and running on any W that is not W10. I was truly baffled when a friend came to me with a laptop like that a month or two ago.

They want to be advertise their services to everyone possible and have everyone be on the same OS so they have to put less work (money) into making them.

MS makes way more money on their services like Office than they do on Windows sales so forcing everyone to be on a system compatible with those services where advertisements for those services are will probably lead to more sales for those services
>>
>>338749905
i imagine something like an app store
since microsoft allready dropped their hallmark as a middle ground between linux and apple with win 8, they're on a slippery slope to becoming apple wannabes
goddamn apple has every tech company in the world wanting a slice of the juicy normie tablet pie so much they abandon their own biggest fucking distinction from apple
face it, everything from now on will be apps, apps, apps, fancy shiny touch screen compatible buttons, and last but not least horrid freemium/pay-for-no-ads wankstain

linux grade virtual desktops without having to install 3rd party versions or the sysinternals virtual desktop tool

I figure I might as well try it before the end of the free upgrade.
