I don't get the people calling people who think VR is a gimmick poorfags.

I mean, it's fucking indisputable that VR right now is complete garbage. The only question is if it will ever be good or if it will be nothing but a gimmick. I personally think it will never go further than Wii status on the fad level, some think that it could be the next big thing in the future and all video games would require it.

Either ways, everyone with any sense agrees you shouldn't waste your money on any VR platform right now.

I remember reading that people who did a lot of exercise involving balance actually were more susceptible to sim sickness. Simply because they use their vestibular system more, so it gets easier for the brain to notice that it doesn't match the visuals.
Don't remember if there was an actual study behind it or if it was just anecdotal, but the reasoning seems sound to me.

My Vive is amazing. RIP Oculus though, competitors are good.

I get travel sickness often enough when I'm on long bus journeys. I can still play my Vive for hours and feel perfectly fine while moving around.
>>
VR has great potential and I'm glad people are now actually taking it seriously and progressing the idea further, but in it's current state it's an absolute gimmick and a waste of money.
>>
Having tried both the vive and the rift, the rift feels like the fad. However the vive with its full room tracking system and controllers feels somewhat mindblowing.

Seriously, I can walk around a virtual space and whack imaginary objects with a couple of controllers. Not only that I can lie on the floor and look up the skirt of an imaginary 3d character. And it looks cool!

However even though its mindblowing, it's still fairly expensive. Until the prices drop and the quality of some software improves (since interaction mechanisms still feel a bit inconsistent across software) it will be more of a fad for the general consumer audience.

If you're playing room scale games, there's no artificial locomotion going on. If you want to compare your travel sickness to sim sickness, you need to play something with artificial locomotion.

It's fine for the price.

Tracking and 3D is perfect, but lenses and resolution is so-so. Pixels are quite big and noticeable. Lenses are sharp only in a small area in the center, you can't look around with your eyes much, have to look with your head. Isn't a deal breaker, but you definitely get what you pay for.

Then there's overheating, I have S6 and I get an overheating warning after 20 or so minutes of video. You can dismiss it, but the phone throttles down the CPU, so the framerate may drop.

And the Oculus software is cancer. I had to buy an app, that disables whatever services it installs, just so that I can run Cardboard applications. And I had to sideload porn watching application, which is a multi-step process, with getting developer code from Oculus, then uploading it on some webserver and then that webserver building and signing packages for your phone. Even then the app doesn't show in Oculus library. Hearing how now they're locking down the platform even more - fuck them, not going to buy anything from Oculus. What's the point, if you can't even run porn on your VR.

Consider waiting for phones that support Daydream, that will be a lot better probably. Might just get Cardboard for now. But GearVR is fine, if the price feels cheap to you.

There's nothing wrong with teleporting - it's an acceptable compromise for not being able to move too far by walking. After all if teleporters existed in the real world, americans would be using them to teleport across the room instead of using their legs to walk around.

I was there recently and we were in that Art of Disney shop near the front, and two fucking ginormous whales, both a man and woman, came rolling in on their scooters, which I'm surprised they were able to fit on and not shatter under their weight.
A Japanese guy was there too, someone who apparently designs or makes a lot of the Precious Moments, which are just these porcelain sculptures, and when the two landwhales wheeled in I'm sure he was thinking about how so many Americans are fat pigs that can't even support themselves, because at Disney, there's fucking thousands of them.

Not that guy, but i have one too and he seems like he stopped responding.

They are comfortable enough, but one thing people dont talk about is there is a 'Sweet Spot'
The lenses focus the image into one spot and you need your eyes to be there. You have to spend a good amount of time raising and lowering the headset minute amounts to hit it, when you get it just right everything will be in focus, but if not, the peripherals will start to fade away.

As for comfort, its acceptable, but there are also aftermarket 3rd party foam replacements to attempt to improve upon it, ive been thinking of getting one called VRcover that is machine washable and improve the comfort, as well as the 'sweet spot'

Ill ask any other Vive VR questions
>>
>>338623864
Oh that's just because of that article someone dug up like four threads ago. The tl;dr is basically two arguments: artificial locomotion, which can be mitigated by a bunch of methods or eliminated if you limit yourself to room scale, and vergence/accommodation conflict, which can't be eliminated at all right now but I think he's seriously overestimating.

Near silent, only times you'll hear them is when you first plug them in and you're focusing on it.

Even then, this is assuming your hearing range can reach that high.

Once you've correctly adjusted it to your own head (top strap, two side straps), it's pretty comfy, even during high movement games.

The face cushion also easily comes on/off and can be replaced with anything you want. A lot of people are buying high end sleep masks, cutting out a hole with the same dimensions and using that instead.

>I’ve been working with these displays - both the $80,000 kind and the $500 kind - for years. Almost everyone can tolerate wearing them for several minutes before getting sick. About half of people feel sick after a few minutes - and (maybe) half of them get so sick that they have to take off the goggles ASAP. Anecdotal evidence - sadly.

>Most of the demo’s that are given at trade shows and other industry events are just a few minutes long. I don’t know whether that’ s intentional or not…but it explains why so many people THINK that they’re going to love VR - sadly, they won’t realize the problem until AFTER they’ve splurged $500 on one of these gizmos.

I own a Vive. It's great. I've played it just about every day I've had it since I got it two weeks back. Worth the money so far. The games are kinda simple but incredibly engaging. Altspace is some of the best social gaming I've done in forever, and the hentai games are great.

I will say, the headset gets uncomfortable after a while, but we're talking after hours of keeping it on and never taking it off.

It's definitely an enthusiast product and i'm not gonna say most people should be buying this shit at the current price and tech, but i'm totally happy with being an early adopter since i'm a richfag anyways.

Nope. They're all really lame. Gran Turismo is stuck on online bullshit, and abandoned it's roots of racing road cars in favor of Le Mans cars for 75% of the game, Forza is well... i don't want to buy a bone for 1 game, and as per usual, PC simulators are no fun allowed. Asetto Corsa strangled the modding community with it's bullshit "no porting tracks from other games" rules on the forums, and project CARS dosen't even support modding. So essentially you're left with games from 10-15 years ago, and none of them really offer good VR support.

If only we could get another gran turismo 2.

You're shooting holes in your own argument.

Yes, you can still use the Virtual Boy, because it works, but that doesn't mean it has "lasted two decades".

Pupil tracking and some form of hand tracking will have to be standardized before any of these devices take off for real.

And then the older kits without these features will be rendered completely obsolete.

Gran Turismo 2 was one of the first games I ever pirated, true story. Rented it from blockbuster and went over to my grandpa's office he had a (at the time very rare and expensive for most of us plebs) CD burner so we'd go over there occasionally to copy PSX games. About half the time they didn't work since they were beat up Blockbuster rentals, and it took hella days to actually copy since this was one of the earlier generations of the things which were very slow, but still the allure of free games was too strong.

That once again comes down to having the headset adjusted correctly.

Because they're fresnel lenses, things in your peripheral vision aren't as clear as things directly ahead of you. You get in the habit of turning your head to look at things more often than moving your eyes.

However, if the headset is adjusted specifically for your eyes/head (rather than being left on the default 'median' settings that work for everyone), images are pretty crisp and the symptoms I listed above are minimized.

VR could conceivably incorporate your hands and the necessary parts of your environment, so I wouldn't rule it out completely.

And we might yet invent input methods and local feedback and awareness systems that mean we don't need to see our immediate surroundings with our eyes.

Is this kind of this 50 years or more down the line? Sure.

But it could happen.

Not saying anyone should by into the current crop of broken ass overpriced gimmicks though. Fuck that shit.

I use my eyes to look around just as much as I use my neck. The way current VR does it is very uncomfortable, since you always need to look straight forward and turn exclusively with your neck.

That problem isn't going to be solved with headgear style VR.

More a joke about motion sickness being the thing that kills VR. Certainly a problem to be aware of for devs, but not an absolute killer.

On a business level, the only situation in which a headset would be useful is if someone wants to visualize a shit ton of information all at once and doesn't want to invest in a 100ft tv. Though AR can also fix that problem.

Honestly though, I was just shitposting and although I could easily spare the 800 or whatever to get into VR, I'll let the early adopters deal with the limited tech and early kinks and bugs that still need to be ironed out to make the scene viable long-term. I think that VR is finally, ACTUALLY, 10 years away from being a must-have. But it'll only get there if the early adopters are there to throw money at the devs, so for that I thank them, and let it soothe their buyers' remorse.

its called reality because it gives you the subconscious impression of being in a physical space that doesn't actually exist
that's why you get people trying to lean on virtual walls or tables when they're distracted
or putting their controllers down on surfaces that don't exist

also the whole point of room scale and tracked controllers is that you use your arms and legs

I actually tried a vive demo in a windows store.

On one hand the technology and level of immersion was amazing. It definitely lived up to the hype here. Can't comment on motion sickness though since the demo was only ~15min.

On the other hand, the games right now are all wii sports tier shit and the cost is way outside of what I can afford.

If they can bring the price down and make some good games(or porn) I can see this taking off. This biggest hurdle they have is getting the public to try it before eveyone dismisses it as a gimmick and it crashes and burns.

Mainly Elite Dangerous with Radial G here and there and pretty much all of my normal non VR games in VD. I also try ADR1FT here and there and ignore the motion sickness but end up feeling "off" afterwards.

Eve Valkyrie is really basic and I got jewed out of my founders edition stuff because they didn't prompt me to link accounts on first time setup and theres no way to do so after the fact.

I've also been watching a lot of anime in VD's theater option. Marathoned all of Ajin that way which was pretty cool. Ajin is dogshit compared to sidonia btw

Exactly the same as me.

It is unironically the future of video games. Even the shitty Gear VR has sold me on that. Incredible. Incredible stuff.

The one thing that's going to hold it back is GPU limitations at the moment. When you hit that point at which 4k on both screen becomes possible then it's over.

Is this the poorfag cry thread?

VR is the future and Vive leads the way

Grow up and Get jobs you losers

That shit is fun as hell man,
>>

>tfw literally using a Galaxy S3 (you know, from 2012) strapped to my face
other than hilariously retarded shit like VR coasters (and hell, some of them didn't do shit to me), I didn't get particularly nauseous using it
and that's with me using the thing for 2 and 3 hours straight (and then my phone battery died)

thing has appalling headtracking lag and drift because it's an underpowered for the job phone strapped to my face by a piece of plastic with some lenses
and other than being annoyed that I can't just relax on my bed and use it (at least I have a swivel chair), it's been fine
>>
>>338619028
Is this news to people?

This shit has been talked about in VR threads for a long time. There's literally not one single thing on that page that I haven't seen said in /v/ posts over the pat couple years.
>>

Do you need a $1000 computer to shitpost on a mongolian puppet show imageboard?
The answer is no, but that doesn't stop most of /v/
>>
>>338643502

Yep.
>>
>come to these threads for discussion

>can't actually discuss video games on an imageboard about discussing video games withou getting laughed at by a million anime girls

And using a computer, watching TV, playing video games, or browsing on your smartphone could be called to "looking at a bunch of tiny lightbulbs flash for hours on end"

Technically true, but doesn't really describe what's happening.

Nah, that's the one time /v/ is right. Overwatch is an amazing game, if not goat. No game has even come close to what it's doing, it's a real gem in the rough. Even if you don't like it, you have to admit how unique and creative it is.

You tax dollars for supporting me going to college :^).

I got $2000 for the american opportunity tax credit when my school is already essentially paid off through academic scholarships which I threw on top of what I had already saved. Now I have loads of figs and a baller PC. So thanks senpai.
