I don't get the people calling people who think VR is a gimmick poorfags.
I mean, it's fucking indisputable that VR right now is complete garbage. The only question is if it will ever be good or if it will be nothing but a gimmick. I personally think it will never go further than Wii status on the fad level, some think that it could be the next big thing in the future and all video games would require it.
Either ways, everyone with any sense agrees you shouldn't waste your money on any VR platform right now.

I remember reading that people who did a lot of exercise involving balance actually were more susceptible to sim sickness. Simply because they use their vestibular system more, so it gets easier for the brain to notice that it doesn't match the visuals.
Don't remember if there was an actual study behind it or if it was just anecdotal, but the reasoning seems sound to me.
I'll buy one when they're cheaper and actually have some good porn on them.

Pretty retarded, actually. Not that I mind, buyers remose threads are always fun to post in.
My Vive is amazing. RIP Oculus though, competitors are good.
I get travel sickness often enough when I'm on long bus journeys. I can still play my Vive for hours and feel perfectly fine while moving around.
VR has great potential and I'm glad people are now actually taking it seriously and progressing the idea further, but in it's current state it's an absolute gimmick and a waste of money.
Having tried both the vive and the rift, the rift feels like the fad. However the vive with its full room tracking system and controllers feels somewhat mindblowing.
Seriously, I can walk around a virtual space and whack imaginary objects with a couple of controllers. Not only that I can lie on the floor and look up the skirt of an imaginary 3d character. And it looks cool!
However even though its mindblowing, it's still fairly expensive. Until the prices drop and the quality of some software improves (since interaction mechanisms still feel a bit inconsistent across software) it will be more of a fad for the general consumer audience.
>>338619374
>>338621707
>I get travel sickness often enough when I'm on long bus journeys. I can still play my Vive for hours and feel perfectly fine while moving around.
If you're playing room scale games, there's no artificial locomotion going on. If you want to compare your travel sickness to sim sickness, you need to play something with artificial locomotion.

It's fine for the price.
Tracking and 3D is perfect, but lenses and resolution is so-so. Pixels are quite big and noticeable. Lenses are sharp only in a small area in the center, you can't look around with your eyes much, have to look with your head. Isn't a deal breaker, but you definitely get what you pay for.
Then there's overheating, I have S6 and I get an overheating warning after 20 or so minutes of video. You can dismiss it, but the phone throttles down the CPU, so the framerate may drop.
And the Oculus software is cancer. I had to buy an app, that disables whatever services it installs, just so that I can run Cardboard applications. And I had to sideload porn watching application, which is a multi-step process, with getting developer code from Oculus, then uploading it on some webserver and then that webserver building and signing packages for your phone. Even then the app doesn't show in Oculus library. Hearing how now they're locking down the platform even more - fuck them, not going to buy anything from Oculus. What's the point, if you can't even run porn on your VR.
Consider waiting for phones that support Daydream, that will be a lot better probably. Might just get Cardboard for now. But GearVR is fine, if the price feels cheap to you.

They are comfortable enough, but one thing people dont talk about is there is a 'Sweet Spot'
The lenses focus the image into one spot and you need your eyes to be there. You have to spend a good amount of time raising and lowering the headset minute amounts to hit it, when you get it just right everything will be in focus, but if not, the peripherals will start to fade away.
As for comfort, its acceptable, but there are also aftermarket 3rd party foam replacements to attempt to improve upon it, ive been thinking of getting one called VRcover that is machine washable and improve the comfort, as well as the 'sweet spot'
Ill ask any other Vive VR questions
>>338623864
Oh that's just because of that article someone dug up like four threads ago. The tl;dr is basically two arguments: artificial locomotion, which can be mitigated by a bunch of methods or eliminated if you limit yourself to room scale, and vergence/accommodation conflict, which can't be eliminated at all right now but I think he's seriously overestimating.

Asetto Corsa strangled the modding community with it's bullshit "no porting tracks from other games" rules on the forums, and project CARS dosen't even support modding. Yes, you can still use the Virtual Boy, because it works, but that doesn't mean it has "lasted two decades".
Pupil tracking and some form of hand tracking will have to be standardized before any of these devices take off for real.
And then the older kits without these features will be rendered completely obsolete.

Might be an issue with the projection. From what I understand there's nothing like a common standard for VR video right now, so everyone's just kind of fucking around with their equipment.

Is the Vive going to have traditional games as well, or are most of the titles going to be focused on Room Scale VR?
>>338625474
Not many, but of course. See >>338625396
>>338625470
Honestly I thought i'd be in the same boat, but the only seated game i've played much in VR is Elite Dangerous. Roomscale is genuinely pretty fun assuming you aren't fat as fuck and can move a little. Space Pirate Trainer is my go-to.
Elite does feel GREAT in VR though. Waiting on a wheel to ship so I can do Project Cars proper.

Nice article
I found strange that I actually learned something from /v/

Is this a bizarre joke about how VR will somehow become the stadard for viewing PC image output?
Because it might, but certainly not the way it works now.

I'm not too hot on arcade racers. Although 90's arcade racer does look kind of fun.
>>338625520
it has almost no road cars, most of the game is DLC and it has no modding support.
I've heard things on /ovg/ about a game called race room, and something like stock car challenge.
>>338625767
Fuck yeah dude. The car to have was the Renault Espace F1. I need to dig my copy out of the closet and start replaying now that i got into emulation. I just 100%ed tokyo xtreme racer drift 2, and now everything else is coming up short.
>>338625507
Took many years before I got a flat screen. Goddamn the contrast was shit for a long ass time.
>>338624873
That once again comes down to having the headset adjusted correctly.
Because they're fresnel lenses, things in your peripheral vision aren't as clear as things directly ahead of you. You get in the habit of turning your head to look at things more often than moving your eyes.
However, if the headset is adjusted specifically for your eyes/head (rather than being left on the default 'median' settings that work for everyone), images are pretty crisp and the symptoms I listed above are minimized.

If you like SPT, get hollowpoint asap. Easily the most fun ive had with the Vive so far.

Needs a star of david in the top right corner, i'm too stoned to paint it in.
I am not getting into VR until it doesn't require strapping a monitor to my face.
>>338625969
VR will never, ever, ever become the standard for viewing PC image output. For most applications, it's overkill and doesn't justify cutting you off from your environment.
AR could at least conceivably replace monitors but I don't really see it either.
>>338626234
I don't think that's going to happen in your lifetime, and I think eventually, you're going to get into VR anyway.
>>338626234
>strapping a monitor to my face
I love this classic meme.
>>338625846
What's the point of VR without room scale? Save your $XXX and buy this shit, same thing.
>>338626416
He's right, though. Consumer VR as of right now consists of head mounted displays. They involve strapping a screen to your face.

Is this article still relevant?
The vive has been out for over a month now and people aren't experiencing any motion sickness issues, outside of specific situations which are known to cause it (trying to play non vr games through VorpX, etc.)
Not disagreeing with the article, just curious.
>>338626235
VR could conceivably incorporate your hands and the necessary parts of your environment, so I wouldn't rule it out completely.
And we might yet invent input methods and local feedback and awareness systems that mean we don't need to see our immediate surroundings with our eyes.
Is this kind of this 50 years or more down the line? Sure.
But it could happen.
Not saying anyone should by into the current crop of broken ass overpriced gimmicks though. Fuck that shit.
>People were expecting things from this.
>>338626541
>What's the point of VR without room scale
Literally anything that puts the character in a driver's seat of some sort
>>338626694
The article is overestimating the effect of vergence/accomodation conflict and unaware that you can design games in such a way that there is no artificial locomotion.
>>338626694
Not a single Oculus/Vive/GearVR review has mentioned experiencing motion sickness.
>>338626321
>Statement countered with "I think" and "I think" followed by no explanations.
While I applaud your reational calm, there really isn't much weight to what you're saying.
>>338626416
I use my eyes to look around just as much as I use my neck. The way current VR does it is very uncomfortable, since you always need to look straight forward and turn exclusively with your neck.
That problem isn't going to be solved with headgear style VR.
>playing on vr
>not playing roguelikes on a CRT monitor, neon ascii blaring into your retinas as you attempt to ascend once again to relive the glory of your youth, only to fail again
>not waiting for the headset with the superior price/quality ratio
>not waiting for freelancers to write drivers for it so you can use it on two different platforms
>not using it with SteamOS installed directly on your PS4
For the price you spent on just a overpriced meme, I'll be able to enjoy the same memes and play regular vidya at the same time. Only a fool would trust a start up to deliver in both hardware and software titles compared to a Japanese technology juggernaut.
>>338626416
That's precisely what's happening though.
>>338625969
More a joke about motion sickness being the thing that kills VR. Certainly a problem to be aware of for devs, but not an absolute killer.
On a business level, the only situation in which a headset would be useful is if someone wants to visualize a shit ton of information all at once and doesn't want to invest in a 100ft tv. Though AR can also fix that problem.

I couldn't justify $800 for what I would only use to masturbate.
>>338626862
Not a single Oculus/Vive/GearVR review has been writting by someone who isn't either extremely biased in his excitement for the technology, or someone paid by Oculus/Vive/GearVR.
>>338626867
I'm shitposting on a siberian scrimshaw discussion forum. Of course nothing I say has weight, and you're probably not going to remember it once it comes true. We're all just here for shits and giggles.
>>338626609
Honestly though, I was just shitposting and although I could easily spare the 800 or whatever to get into VR, I'll let the early adopters deal with the limited tech and early kinks and bugs that still need to be ironed out to make the scene viable long-term. I think that VR is finally, ACTUALLY, 10 years away from being a must-have. But it'll only get there if the early adopters are there to throw money at the devs, so for that I thank them, and let it soothe their buyers' remorse.
>>338627097
Well he's got that.
But for how long?
>>338619209
>>338626862
That's just factually wrong. A whole bunch of games, especially for the Rift or Gear, have reviews that mention discomfort. Vive doesn't really get them because they play things very safe and don't use artificial locomotion.

It's like a TV, you don't need one. You don't even need one to play video games. But they're pretty good to have
That being said I do hope it takes off
