One of my fondest Runescape memories involved a guy trying to get me killed in the wilderness so he could loot my shit. He wanted to "show me something cool" and said to follow him. I wasn't your too much of a retarded kid, so I proceeded cautiously. As soon as he took me into the wilderness I should have realized he was scamming me. He was about my level though, so I figured he wasn't going to kill me or anything. He took me to the outside of a small room with npc's inside. They were neutral Monks of Zamorak. There was a cup called "Wine of Zamorak" on an alter at the end of this room. He told me he was doing a quest but couldn't get the wine himsef and needed someone else to do it. He said he'd pay me once I got it for him.
I was suspicious, but figured if the monks attacked me I could just run out of the room. What could go wrong?! I ran in, grabbed the wine, and of course the Monks became hostile. I ran for the door but this fucker closed it on me! He kept trying to close it as I tried to open it over and over. Eventually he must have mis-clicked and ran INTO the room as I opned the door and got out. I immediately closed the door on him and the monks blasted his ass away. I waited for the monks to move away and opened the door and looted his shit. It felt so fucking good to have the tables turn on someone trying to take advantage of me.

In many ways I think this map is the most important part of the game. What runescape did right, what made the game so captivating, was the sense of discovery and adventure. The game literally just drops you off and allows you to go anywhere and while it does have a lot of lore you don't learn most of it until you start progressing through the game.
I remember looking at this map for hours, just wondering what these areas had. If they went with the traditional style of map where it only reveals what you've already seen I don't think the game would have been as good, seriously.

It was so popular in 2007 and 2008 that my whole middle-school played it. People would trade eachother items for help with homework or lunches. That sense of adventure when walking through that gigantic world and discovering everything for the first time is something I don't think I'll ever get to feel again. With all the handholding in recent games, I doubt I'll be able to have that legitimate feeling of dread when walking through certain areas in fear I'll die and lose all my items either.
The music tied everything together perfectly, it was the definition of comfy.

But with runescape's map every area I hadn't been able to go to was a place where if I went, I could get mercilessly oneshot and lose almost everything I had. Where I would only go when I also had to unlock the ability to use a new weapon, and where if I wasn't prepared with all of the items I needed I'd basically have just wasted my time.
