Obsidian actually said that making round-by-round reloading depended on how many rounds are still left in gamebryo was one of the hardest part of the development.

They also wanted to make it so ballistic fist consumes shotgun shells on each succesful strike, but couldn't get it to work.

Well it just goes to prove that Bethesda is going to put exactly as little effort as needed for game to sell.

What I don't get though is why the made the PC drive the bolt forward in all reloading animations, even though it was dobe right in F3 where PC would let go after driving it back.

Fallout 4 doesn't use Gamebyo at all though, it uses a brand new high tech Creation™ Engine. The gun reloads like it does because it was stylistically designed to be that way.

The problem is that FO4's water cooled weapon isn't a crew served machinegun but an infantry assault rifle.

This is coming from a company that made a CETME and AK47 clone in their previous game, and even had that AK47 clone burried in FO4's game files.

It's not really retarded. It's a way to save resources by still using the same brass instead of making a new one.

It's just incredibly lazy if not downright disrespectful given that they knew it's going to be visible in VATS.

See, they did simliar thing in F3 DLC where a metro during a custceen was actually a helmet.

But in that case it's fine and actually clever because the player is not supposed to see it and can't see it without cheating.

Gamebryo is a shit engine with shit limitations.

You want a close combat weapon that can use limited ammo to inflict more damage? (the ripper) Too bad. Either it always uses ammo, or it never uses ammo. If you look, you'll see that all the powerfists, rippers, ballistic fists, and so on actually have small energy cells, microfusion cells, or magazines, but they couldn't bypass gamebryo's binary shit rules.

I don't know how obsidian managed to implement their lever guns. Are there any videos of them talking about it?
>>
>>338546905
most games have 2 reload animation
this is just lazyness
>>
>>338546905
Because the issue is magnified when coming dropping features previous games had and what other games are too lazy to do doesn't make any player feel better about the decision.

Man, if reloads weren't cancelable or shell by shell, I'd never use a pump or level action. It's a huge issue of viability for single and multiplayer.
>>
>>338546905
The problems here are:

Mirrored guns, as you said

The fact that he loads all five rounds even though he only shot one, meaning there are still 4 more in the magazine. This goes beyond being just a cometic detail, as that reload takes 5 times longer than it should.

PC works the lever at the end of reload, even though he always does that after each shot, meaning that the gun would actually eject a live round rather than brass.

The second thing is the main issue.

>Pretty much every FPS has 1 reload animation regardless of how many bullets you shoot.
No. Most FPSes take into account how many rounds are left in the magazine (NV did), not to mention things like if there is a round in the chamber or not.
>>
>>338543559

The guy in charge of the project took the time to buy guns, study guns, talk to people who use guns, learn about mormons, and get a 1920s ratpack expert employeed to get the Vegas feel just right.

Most FPS games have a fuckton of reloads.

Look at something like the crysis games. Sure, they're kinda old now, but you have different animations for all the suit modes, whether or not you have ammo left in your boxmagazineclip, and if you're 'in cover' or not.

In addition to all that, in just 18 months they managed to make what is considered one of the best (if not the best) Fallout games AND the single player game with the most lines of dialogue recorded.

Please keep in mind that a lot of the heavy lifting for New Vegas had already been done for FO3 in the form of existing models, textures, gameplay systems, code, etc.

Anon please stop being stupid for 2 seconds.

Yes, Bethesda has been using the same engine since fucking Morrowind. And they've been building their new games on top of their old ones. Of course there'll be old code in there somewhere.

But each new game they make still requires writing new code, recording new audio, making new models and textures. FO3 is one such case.

New Vegas was built on top of FO3, so it uses a lot of FO3's assets and code. Hence why it was put together so quickly.
>>
>>338535806
Because the FNV guys actually looked at a gun for more then five seconds from google images instead of Bethesda where they think of a gun then try to model it from their memory.

There was very little heavy lifting.

All the old fallout 3 weapon and armor textures stick out like sore thumbs, as do their shitty designs.

Compare the LAER to the bethesda made laser rifle, or look at all the riot gear armors and compare them to the raider armors the fiends wear. Even their skull helmets are more detailed than their clothes.

The world is bigger, it has more stuff in it, and there's far more shit going on under the hood than in bethesda's games. They made their own script engine, they implemented 'literally impossible!' lever reloads, and incorporated all these other things that Todd said was impossible, like thrown melee weapons, seecondary attacks for unarmed and melee weapons, put in ironsights, secondary ammo types, crafting... Saying it's a conversation is a bit of an insult.

It wasn't true 6 years ago, and isn't today.

To illustrate, here is a picture. Also, there's more 12 gauge shotgun ammo types than there are ammo types TOTAL in fallout 3.
>>
>>338546395
They'll want it in there when they copy/paste to make the next Elder Scrolls.

In all seriousness, I'm no professional coder but I'd imagine when you have so much code, it's a lot safer to disable chunks of it instead of outright deleting it in case something unforeseen breaks. They could eventually go back and clean things up, but at this point the entire code base has to be such a fucking mess they're afraid of touching anything.
>>

>What's the problem here? Pretty much every FPS has 1 reload animation regardless of how many bullets you shoot.

You are out of your mind.

I can't think of a single game in which the incorrect amount of ammunition is loaded one round at a time. Not every shooter I've played actually has one-round-at-a-time reloading animations, but of those that do, literally EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM does it correctly. This video is a first, for me.

While a large, large part of that is Bethesda, a massive chunk of the blame solely lies with Nvidia. They purposefully gimp performance, especially on AMD powered machines.

Any modern firearm can have rails including pistols, shotguns, revolvers, and lever-action rifles. There are literally holes already drilled and tapped on top of receivers of these rifles to easily install a weaver rail or a normal rail.

I have a Marlin 336BL (which is a .30-30 version of the lever-action rifle in the game) that came from the factory with an XS Sights rail on the top.

If you don't know shit about guns, don't comment about guns.

Davy Crocketts were artillery pieces carried by vehicle and used by a three man crew. Not man-portable.

You fired it at targets between 1.5 and 2 miles out. Because its a fucking nuclear weapon, not a grenade.

I wouldn't mind the Fatman if it was a dark humor type of joke weapon. Sure, you can use it and fire it just fine but you immediately die if you actually use it because nukes are kind of a big fucking deal. It would be a perfect example of the retardation of nuclear war and its effects, fitting in with the setting perfectly.

Pipe weapons are a terrible idea. It's like 200 years after the bombs dropped, and people have the capability to make both prewar guns and new inventions all the time.

But in the Bethesda zoo, every other weapon is a pipe weapon for some reason.

However, tesselation is the easiest culprit to spot. Ever wondered why FO4's godrays absolutely destroy performance? Its because they use an Nividia method of tesselating fucking light beams, and its hilariously excessive.

They did this in Crysis (tesselation of water underneath the map that is renderd but never seen) and multiple other games.

To whoever is saying that nuke catapults carried by infantrymen make sense in the zomg! so whacky and far out fallout universe, d00d.

It doesn't. In the first game, nukes are still serious fucking business. The Master, the game's actual badguy, has a nuke in his basement, but he has no plans to use it, because he and his followers all consider the power of the atom too terrible of a weapon to unleash on mankind again.

It's a Big Thing when you blow up the nuclear reactor on the oil rig in fallout 2, as well, and when Ulysses escapes Big Mountain with the launch codes to the last remaining ICBM batteries in America.

Meanwhile, in fallout 3, here's a fat man that shoots 8 mini nukes in a single go! SO WHACKY!

Riots and violent suppression, martial law, the works.

You have your extended family with you and your only option is to try to get into a vault alongside a throng of other desperate people. Do you try sneaking in with some other legit vaulters? Do you do some intro quests to forge paperwork or earn a favor to get a spot? Do you gather a huge crowd who all try to rush a vault entrance at once? Who do you decide to bring with you? I am almost never weepy over storytelling in movies or vidyagames or what have you. Even rarer for me to find the tired old "bad times happened to this guy, but not before he talked about it at length in a diary!" trope. But for whatever reason when I read these logs they legitimately got to me. I really felt for that poor fucker. They were really well done.

The degree of mismanagement and, really, disrespect Bethesda has to the IP is astounding. I mean for fuck's sake, the amount of people that are around waiting for the player to approach them as if the bomb dropped a week ago is fucking absurd. Chinese ghoul in a fucking submarine? A fucking ghoul child who has been stuck in a fridge for god knows how long? And hey, ghouls don't look like they're actually rotting humans in pain, they look like victims of a fire.

What's the most "mature" story Bethesda has made in their latest RPGs?
>>
>>338535990
This triggered me so much. I like the reload animations, but why the FUCK does it have to put in 5 rounds when I shoot just one? Bethesda really cant fucking do anything right. They just best stick to flinging sticks and swords as atleast they can use the excuse that the prisoner character is a retard.
>>
>>338544125
Its partially thanks to their shitty engines. Bethesda just cant fucking give up on re-using their old assets from 10 years ago and pick a new engine that would atleast allow for decent models, higher model counts and so on.
I guess we also have to think about them consoles that can only render 2npc's at 5fps, but aside from that. They really need to step it up.

That's not all, anon. Where the goon returns to check on Nick after you bust him out, you can avoid him entirely, even unlocking the door and escaping without engaging in any combat whatsoever. Nick still says "We'd better get out of here before anyone notices him and his boys are missing." He'll just walk back into the hallway after that. It really seems like they had more stealth/nonlethal options planned for that dungeon and they just got cut, given how Nick talks about trying not to make a mess.
>>
>>338562806
>But for whatever reason when I read these logs they legitimately got to me. I really felt for that poor fucker. They were really well done.
Every time I read the one where he meets that girl from vault 22 I fucking tear up. I think it works because you have this character who's exerted a level of control over zion to the extent that the tribals consider him to be a god, but he's so fallible and human. He escapes the bombs out of sheer luck, he almost starves to death and dies of radiation, his wife and son died and he wasn't there to die with them.
He's almost a mirror to Joshua Graham in that respect. They're both incredibly competent fighters, but they're also punished by their pasts, and act as protector figures to the tribes of zion. The question is whether you let Graham be consumed by his anger, or make him face his own problems.

The best I can remember is a book in Skyrim that's a diary of a family living through the siege of Windhelm (I think). It's got a sense of history and pathos to it that is completely lost on the game as a whole.

Settlement building does not "just work," not even in regards to placement and snapping. You have to build things in a very specific order if you want to get certain parts to align or snap, the needs system is hugely fucked, pathing is a mess, the UI is horrible, and it is/was riddled with bugs and spawning problems like TV's draining happiness and brahmin spawning on roofs.

Correct me if I'm wrong but Roger is dead and Anon over there isn't.

Testing.

Whacky 50's.

Testing.

My arguments are based on actually knowing a timeline of art, and what makes good art across time. It's a thoughtful application of aesthetics that brings a revolutionary understanding to the audience. I've never played a videogame that did this, it's all trite shit done by other, better mediums.
>>
>>338568379
I wouldn't say NV was the nail in the coffin, it was definitely better than 3, but it pales in comparison to 1 and 2.

thats what you think

Alright, can you show any of this?

Someone screencap this thread, we can probably sell the cap on ebay for 2000 dijiridoos

I bought the Season Pass before you guys jacked the price up

i like the design of that gun since its designed to be used with power armor

You're right, it is a shitty analogy.

In any case, how is Todd saying the settlement system "just works" not a lie when there are several ways it flat-out does not work at all?

Music's my forte, though knowing the visual art aesthetics as well was crucial (I just can't link specific examples). Here you go:

Boy am I glad I didn't waste money on this. It's not worth the $90 he paid

>>338555897
I don't get your problem. Only a few factions have proper gunsmith like the brotherhood of steel.

Your average settlers is gonna have to make do with just piecing together bits from old broken guns and literal pipes. Hence the proliferation of pipes weapons.

I mean sure it's dumb after 200 years but that apply to everything in fallout.

>Knows "a timeline of art"
>Doesn't appreciate the irony in his deriding games as a new medium of art when literally every single artist in Current Year, whichever year through history that actually was, was mocked for their lack of artistry, being called talentless and worthless at worst, or only good for family portraits and novelty at best
>Goes on to say that because he cannot appreciate it, it is not art
>Can't appreciate how fucking retarded and backward that logic is and how easily abused when turned on every other form of art
Haven't laughed like this in a good long while. Thanks Anon.

normies dont want another obsidian fallout. NV was received worse than 3 because of leveled areas and it wasn't wacky enough and some of your choices even had consequence.

Its a branding issue

Opera had its first masterwork within what, 10 years?
Bildungsroman as well.
And the Program Symphony and the Symphonic Poem and the...

Well, you get the point I think. :)

Sorry, you call that art? I can't appreciate it so it doesn't count.

>>338569478
I call it art because they were brand new ideas.
Which videogames have never had.

Yeah I mean it's utterly ridiculous, no one ever do that.

It's not about physical probability but the fact that people wouldn't do it in the universe.
>>
>ITT: anons thinking it's easy to summarize what is art and what isn't art in the 21th century
We live in such a globalized world that claiming something is or isn't art is a difficult task.
Everyone has different opinions and, thanks to the internet, means they can to defend their opinion.
People may claim 50 Shades of Grey is art because it makes primal needs such as lust come forth, other people may claim it isn't art because of the exact same reason.
It's a difficult task and not one to be argued over a Fallout thread.
>>
>>338569601
Oh. Art is only brand new ideas? So nothing is art after the first. Thanks for the clarification. Thanks to 4chan I now know art has been dead for hundreds of thousands of years.

>>338569828
How old are you? I'm curious.

First time I 'built' this I was so disappointed.

First of many.

Disappointments, that is. I was disappointed.
>>
>>338569609
Fun fact. This is not a nuke catapult carried by an infantryman. Further, you can't even fucking use this if the wind conditions and lay of the land you want to operate in aren't perfect because radiation is a serious fucking deal.

There's a considerably greater degree of artistry involved in the act of painting and sculpting.

You honestly believe that coordinating multiple classic forms of art into a cohesive whole is not a merit worth exploring? Using interactivity, sight, and hearing to convey things that before this medium were impossible to convey is an underutilized well, but it's not bereft of water.

Video games are just an incredibly obtuse medium for artistic expression. But they are no less valid than anything else.
>>
There is not a single video game that has brought a new artistic idea into the world.
