Series was started by some of the people who worked on Tales of Phantasma originally. SO as a series is pretty shit, though. 1 and 2 are kinda alright I guess but 3 is crap and 4 is a travesty.
Shadow Hearts, Judgement Wheel is a great system, imagine a clock appearing on the screen for every action you perform in combat, and starting from 12 it ticks clockwise and certain areas are lit up that you need to hit the action button in, crits can be guaranteed if your good enough

There's a lot of tactics that goes into it. I remember hating turn-based too until I realized that, + JRPGs tend to be the best packages when it comes to story, music, art and experience

Arc Rise Fantasia is my GOTYAY jrpg, I know the story is kinda cliché and characters are kinda tales-of-ish but the combat and boss fights are 10/10, also great music.

Growlanser IV and Radiant Historia both have fantastic battle systems and I highly recommend them.
I haven't played Arc Rise Fantasia but it's on my list because someone on 4chan recommended it to me a while ago. My only concern is that it's made by imageepoch and I dislike the Luminous Arc series. How similar to other imageepoch games would you say Arc Rise Fantasia is?

Also holy shit this battle was brutal. I mean there wasn't even a save-point before this right? I had a savestate right before it, and I thought this was one of those "you're supposed to lose" battles after it wiped me out on the first turn.

I got lucky when fighting Mr. Edgy and Niko took care of him for most of the time. The twin lolis,Weiss (because i had no dark magic on me)and Gula were the hardest bosses of the game for me. Special mention to Clyde when you fight him on the desert ruins. I forgot to spread my party and he oneshotted my team with his AOE wind slice attack.

I played that stuff from start to finish without grinding random encounters once. Every single boss is doable without grinding, just be sure to stock on healing items.
Grinding is only needed if you want all those weapon arts/whatever they are called, and the money to upgrade both weapons/armors AND magic.

Well I'm sure that if you're really skilled you can manage the game just fine by not grinding and not skipping any encounters. I wouldn't know, I grind a lot for my weapons because its fun customizing them (weapons have their own EXP-bars).
Grinding is very comfortable anyways, auto-battle can handle most random encounters just fine

I played arc rise underleveled most of the time, the only notable fight I had problems on for being underleveled was the blonde nigga on the beach. Fuck that was hard. Pretty sure I played the undub, combat was fun.

The only grinding you should do in Arc Rise Fantasia is for the weapon unlocks since the heart of combat is weapon customization. And in every major area there is a common mob that is easy and gives good WP.
Playing batman preptime with weapons got annoying but you could setup to deal with anything.
XEnoblade X has my favorite combat system
Main reason I'm interested is that mitsuda and the eureka seven artist were part of it

Maybe I'm weird, but whenever I play JRPGs I avoid all battles that aren't mandatory. Boss battles are usually fun, but any fight where the developers don't specifically try to balance is always boring and makes future fights less fun.

brutal. Starts out trunbased and easy, but as you get better the team level rises, which starts making the battle system tougher.
Turnbased infinte time turns into having a timer that gets shorter as the team level rises. Enemies get nasty and need you to flank or backstab them.
Viola (archer girl) does more damage the FURTHER away you are from mobs AND you need to aim(fps aiming I believe it was) AND you have the turn timer going.
Once you get used to it the battle system becomes fast pased and fun but will fuck you up if you aren't paying attention.

eternal sonata plays like most games with near/far combat ie: star ocean. once you get close to a monster your abilities change. There's also a twist the maps in battles also have a sunshine/shaded area which can change abilities too. at least I'm pretty sure the near/far range is a thing, it's been a minute.

I tend to do the same just cause it gets boring. Older jrpgs are pretty abd at the needed grinding, newer stuff is much more forgiving.
Granted newer stuff lets you curstomize enough to make your characters broken even without level grinding.
Bravely Default & Second
They seem like very normal systems at first, but when you get more jobs you can combine their skills for all sorts of disgusting setups.

Nothing major. The only addition is the Overrise system which is mostly a panic button (50% healing for two characters and 3 free turns). Also some nice new skills, your party is fully customizable for the most part of the game and there are some fun optional battles. The game is even easier to break than the first one though.

Dork souls is an action RPG and honestly probably much easier to understand mechanically than Remnant, particularly how enemies scale. Dark Souls get easier as you play, Last Remnant does not. In fact you can make it so much worse for yourself just playing normally like you would most other RPGs

It's a great game. The positioning is actually relevant and key to victory, unlike a lot of jrpgs. The first few hours of the game are kind of easy, and enemies are a little weak. But afterwards it gets really difficult, and bosses require a lot of strategy.

I played it on X360 and the game was borderline unplayable. Sub 30fps all the time and FUCKING LONG LOADING TIMES WHAT THE FUCK. It poisoned my enjoyment of this game forever.
The soundtrack was pretty damn cool though. Same dude that did Romancing Saga Minstrel Song's ost IIRC (which is a 11/10 ost)

Best part of using those items was to remove weapons from Yuri, make sure his attack stats are as low as you can make them, then use the item that allows you to just keep attacking...
...then sit back and relax during the final boss fight as you hit each of those ring slots and watch him do 1 point of damage per attack at best, punching fast enough to do about 10 attacks per second, until he depletes the boss of all his HP.

Grinding doesn't help much at all in ARF. You get extremely low XP really fast, so eventually it makes it borderline impossible to overlevel in any given situation. Find out whats making the fight so hard, try to customize your weapons better, and pray.

That boss is just basically unfair. As said, you can't over grind and you only able to prep with what you have.
It's probably the hardest fight in the game simply because you need to get lucky and hope the boss doesn't go ham on you every turn.
Nothing after him is that level of unfair unless you don't prep right.

The game has great core quality. Fun combat, grinding that matters, variety of equipment that make sense, etc. Too bad most "good" JRPG often come with more than that. We have come to expect good music/voice acting/story/porn, in which this game is lacking. (Except voice acting, which was actually VERY good if you play it in Japanese. It's the Oreimo guy and Makino Yui)

One tip: the fire buff is FUCKING OP and it really help on the late game because on top of healing your character fully it also gives him a LOT more hp, but you have to combo the buff to get the whole benefit.
