>Today, the developer of Revive, who identifies simply as Libre VR, told Motherboard that a recent update to Oculus software has killed his hack. The update, which is still being rolled out to Oculus users, includes new “updated to platform integrity checks.”

>According to Libre VR, what seems to be happening is that Oculus’ DRM now checks to see whether an Oculus Rift is connected to the PC when playing a game bought from the Oculus store.

Cool, so now the Vive has a clear opportunity to win over people.
>>
>>338510496
it has no content though and is more expensive
>>
>>338510589

VR as a whole is still expensive, and the Vive does have content.

Hell, most reviews are currently showing that the Vive is a better tool, and once Christmas sales start up we'll probably see where the chips fall.
>>
>>338510589
At least it let's you play some games like Mirror's Edge and FO4 in VR if you have the knowhow. (As well as a list of others)

I think vr needs less experiences and more games. I don't think it even needs new games, just old game support is what people wanted to use it for when the oculus Kickstart first began.
>>
VR was a mistake, just let it die. Maybe try again a decade or two from now.
>>
>>338511639
Y tho.

Oculus can die, sure, but why all of vr?
>>
>They trust me. Dumb fucks.

What did he mean by this?
>>
>>338510496
This actually just means Vive owners can't play Oculkus store games. Oculus Rift owners aren't directly effected.
>>

I was just thinking about this. Only big name movies in the area have the option to be seen in 3D. Good riddance I say.
>>
>>338511749
because it's clear at this point in time none of the companies are interested in making a decent product and only how much money they can secure before releasing a low-effort cash grab that doesn't have the consumer in mind

>>
>>338512924
Palmer must be bitting his nails on this. On one hand the company received billions in funding and research money to spend. On the other hand his own personal values were crushed. In the end he has no say when money is concerned.
>>
>>338513280
It's like he learned from 4chan.
>>
>>338512650
Fuck off, the vive is great, and valve has been investing all they can into open VR so people can make their own vr games. The fact that we're getting shovel ware games for vr every day is a sign that even Joe Shmoe can create VR games.

>>
>>338512650
They said it was gonna be different this time. :(

John Carmack said it would be retinal quality. :(
>>
>>338513286

Yeah

For a few years, almost every major AAA release had a "3D" setting for people who bought either the stupid 3D monitors/TVs, which only resulted in stereoscopic junk that looked worse than a plain flat image and destroyed the framerate.

Hell, even the 3DS couldn't get 3D right.
>>
VR is a bad meme and needs to die.
>>
>>338512924
He has technically kept true to that statement. This new policy doesn't affect rift owners, just vive modders
>>
Aaaaaaaand there goes any urge I had to get one.

Thanks senpai; I would have had to spend 1200 bucks between an OR and a 1080 for this.

I still remember where I was when I read that Oculus had been sold to Facebook.. It was basically my 9/11. Now I just want to see how badly Facebook is going to try to kill VR before Valve saves it.

You need to buy an external program to do that, and it also needs to be put forward by them.
Best we have right now is VorpX, 60 dollars, and a pile of supported games. It offers more than just 3d, its got headtracking and a few 1:1 head motion.

But apart from that, if the game let you have Side by Side 3d, where the game is splitscreen, a few programs will let you transfer that to both eyes separately to give you the proper 3d effect
>>
>>338510589
CANT YOU JUST USE OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE LIKE OPENTRACK, AND OTHER SHIT TO MAKE HEADTRACKING AND 3D DEPTH WORK FOR A LOT OF GAMES THAT ARE ALREADY ON THE MARKET? THATS WHAT PEOPLE DID WITH THE DEV KITS

People really mad about Facebook, but as he is implying here Facebook has no real strong VR strategies and really think the biggest VR push will be on mobile anyway (Which Google also thinks) so only really probably care about that platform for any Facebook interrogations.

So far everything the company has done has been within reason and Facebook didn't "Destroy" it , so what is even the problem with Facebook at this point?

For that matter, how is Valve any fucking better than Facebook?

Valve isn't any better. But the fact that they are more worried about how VR will be used, regulated, platformed, marketed etc before shit is even out is hilarious. It just shows how much they put the thought of revenue before gameplay these days. All of them are doing this.

It isn't "what can VR bring to gaming?", but rather "how can we create a platform to monetize every single aspect of". What a shit industry.

That's wrong though. Every one of them is developing the technology, and this might surprise you but it's not free to do so.

After spending literally millions to billions of dollars they would want a way to actually sell something effectively. I don't know what fantasy world you live in where billions of dollars is spent without the expectation of return.

>>338520507
No one ever said it should be free. But to take active steps to close a platform so you can bank on licensing and shit is pretty jewish. Doubt it'll last long too. Whichever platform ends up being the most user / mod / creation friendly will win in the end.
>>
>>338520507
What? How does that have anything to do with locking down the machine? It's a cheapskate short term strategy thst will eventually fuck everyone over, they are consolizing and excluding instead of consolidating.

This WILL throw them off and give the Vive a stronger grip. Valve isn't retarded like Nintendo, they will smell the weakness and go for the kill. Right now the 1# priority of VR is to buy devs' trust, which will bring games, which will naturally bring players, and locking down your shit won't help your cause.
>>
>>338520890
Sell both and get a 1080. Pocket the difference.

>>
>>338521560
I don't understand why this is so hard for VRtards to understand.

Your goofy ass vagina-repelling headset? It is a peripheral. It is not a platform, it is a peripheral. It is in competition with Monitors, monitors which do the same basic function as the headsets, but without causing migraines or neck strain, and at a fraction of the price and performance demand.

This round of VR is going to die a hilarious death, just like the 2010 VR fad, and the 2005 VR fad, and the 2000 VR fad, and the 1995 VR fad, going all the way back to taht shitty injector and blurry glasses combo you could buy to give Doom 2 a sense of semi-depth.

This cycle will continue until the market finally comes to terms with one simple fucking thing, "If it is over ~250 USD for a display device, it will never reach even small-but-notable market adoption", even fucking Nintendo figured that out with the 2DS, when FUCKING NINTENDO abandons a gimmick, you know it's fucking dead.

Eh... why again haven't all those companies developed some common open standard and API for programming for all of their devices in the beginning? Like it's 2016, FFS. it's an enthusiast market. joe everyman isn't buying VR goggles, and they don't expect him to. they aren't looking for a big audience to market to, they're trying to milk the shit out of the few whales that are interested, meaning those weird nerds with way too much money. and if they're gonna spend 600 dollars on one headset, then why wouldn't they be stupid enough to spend it on another? nerds are retards with money

I honestly believe that the blowout is yet to come.
PSVR is dirt cheap and statistically everyone already owns a PS4.
It's bound to sell more than PC VR, all they need to do is:
1. Have games
2. Advertise it

And Sony will win.

1 might be a challenge though.

The porn industry (aka Jews) will be the one deciding the winner, like during each format wars. The one winning the war will most likely be the Occulus, since it's owned by Jews.

The Oculus controllers are not the same thing as the Vive controllers. Oculus still can't do roomscale.

And no. Go to Steam's VR section and just look around. Most of the games are for Vive only because they are room scale experiences. Many are compatible with both(sitting/standing). Some sitting experiences aren't even Oculus compatible because they require Vive controllers.

I don't want room scale though. I don't have space for that shit and having like 10ftx10ft to move around doesn't make much of a difference if I have to teleport to move further anyway. I may as well just use a thumbstick to walk then.

I want a good omnidirectional treadmill to come out and have been looking hard at the Virtuix. The reviews for it are really good. The Cyberith is much cheaper but is also badly reviewed, I don't know what makes one so different from the other when they seem to work essentially the same way.
