Sadly, it's become fucking awful in the last patch with them adding pay 2 win and copying League, but it had a good run. Overwatch will probably be the new baseline with Dota turning to shit.

Well, for one, it's a team based game. For two, damage doesn't matter as much because kills and deaths don't matter. The only things that matter are objectives: Towers, Keeps, Map Objectives. If you forget the kills philosophy of league and dota, you realize Heroes is actually great.
For example: There is no farming, but heroes not in lane means your team falls behind in EXP. So what if you run Abathur and split soak giving your team an exp lead while they hard push a single lane?
I guess what I'm trying to say is, for a game that doesn't reward individual skill, I've rather enjoyed consistently running abathur in pubs, and securing top damage down in both categories, AND 3-4x the exp gains of anyone else in the game. When our team is 6 levels ahead of the enemy team and we're up on towers and keeps, and they can't push against us because I'm split pushing and split soaking, AND we're only tied in kills? Yeah. I'll take this meta over dota's any day. In this meta its not a retard rush to kill people. You have to work with teammates and coordinate at least, and the one who can unite a team towards a common goal best is going to fucking crush. Plus the community is nice.

Kill and Deaths don't matter for their own sake. They matter because they lead to an objective being successfully captured or denied.
If you run a split soak strategy to get 3-4 players collapsing on a single lane, it's better to NOT kill the enemy if it allows you to zone them out of exp range than it is to kill them if it pushes the lane up so a rotation can soak behind walls.
...unless you can turn that kill into a successful push on a fort, in which case kill away. Just know that it doesn't matter if you kill someone unless it's for an objective. EXP rewards for kills are abysmal, by design, and as such there is no feeding. There are still stupid decisions in teamfights and objectives though.

TF2 hit big when it came out and, thanks to many questionable updates, has managed to maintain a highly (yes, highly, don't compare it to csgo or dota because they're in an entirely different league) active player base that has yet to show any hint of decaying. On top of all of that, it's free. Hoooo ho boy, it's fucking free.
Overwatch might survive, it's possible. It may sustain itself even years into the future if handled right, but it won't dethrone TF2 unless they're willing to go the f2p mannconomy route, and even that's a risky venture.

Gonna shill for HOTS because of this. It still has all those mechanics, but because kills give almost nothing compared to objectives, and experience points are shared across the whole team, there is no snowballing. Either you as a team get ahead, or you don't. Plus there are dedicated "farming" specialists who basically farm for their whole team while they push or fight or whatever. It's surprisingly really nice. It still has a lot of the depth of league or dota, but it's presented in such a way you can't get fucked over by a baddie, and the strategies themselves aren't nearly as cancerous.

Publishers use twitch, YouTube, users, and sales to invest in particular projects.
It doesn't matter that people play TF2. Valve won't make another one, because there is no interest in the game. They wouldn't publish a new game to a pop that shows no signs of increasing. The only thing they can do with the game is to offer its user base with tradeable items. To invest anymore would be a waist.
Counter strike and Dota on the other hand have a lot of potential.
