Pharah is objectively superior. Also from a gameplay viewpoint (as deep as gameplay goes in Overwatch anyways) Pharah is a monster while Symmetra has some issues with actually doing anything useful.

Symmetra by and large is the single most dull Hero to play in the entire game.
Support classes in any game already have a difficult time getting popularity due to the roles they have to fill but Symmetra only has one and a quarter useful skills.
The turrets that slow but are destroyed the moment some queffs in their direction, or the teleporter, which is useful only on the Greek maps because anything outside a stationary zone makes a teleporter a moot point.

Tracer and Widowmaker are the undisputed faces of the Overwatch franchise right now and until Blizzard decides to fuck it up somehow, they will remain the most popular and best pairing.
I see people clamor for more comics/material for the other characters, Mercy in particular. I actually dont think its going to help in terms of pairing popularity. More Mercy content will link her more to Reaper and Genji if anything, I doubt she'll get any moments with Pharah.

I'd much rather have a a Symmetra over a Pharah. Widowmaker can one shot all of the offensive characters, but with a Symmetra on your team you can't.
Pharah's ult is all but useless to good team work, where as, Symmetra supports strong teams. Mercy and Symmetra can make good players into a great team. Fighting a good Widowmaker can make you question the viability of playing with out Symmetra.
Pharah and Mercy are just pub stompers; there is a place for it, but they certainly not the top tier otp.
Now Mercy, Symmetra, Pharah, and Widowmaker, on the other, is rage quit tier.

For starters have the teleporter be akin to Torbjorn's turret, where you can simply place another one. The downside is that you have to give it less health and have it to where it needs to recharge every few teleports.
The turrets just need to be given a bit more health and they'll be fine, same goes for her standard and alt fires.
The ult is tricky, the best way you can do it is by having something that can create paths and stuff for non mobile heroes.
An example could be she can make a ramp on that gate during the first stage of Shimmada castle.
She is out of the fight the most compared to most other heroes and that is probably why no one enjoys playing her.

Tracer is a hero and probably wouldn't bend over to Talon's side for Widow. Widow is brainwashed and can't actually bend over for Overwatch for Tracer.

As someone who played a lot of Symmetra during the beta, she is plenty balanced. The only buff's I'd recommend would be to give her tele 10 instead of 6 teleports, and make her alt fire projectile charge faster and fly faster.

Look at what she's got:
A weapon that aims for you, shields she can slap on everyone and turrets that she can spam out everywhere so she doesn't even need to strategically place them like Torbjorn's.
All of these things are kind of underpowered, but can't be buffed because they require no skill or thought at all and if they were actually any good they would ruin the entire game. Her teleporter is nice. It makes the game more fun for the rest of her team because they spend more time fighting and less walking, and it requires some strategy to use effectively.
So, here's my suggestion. 1, give her a real gun that she has to actually fucking aim. Not a great one, she's a support.
2: Remove her ability to place shields on people replace her turrets with little generators that apply shields to allies standing near them(which go away when they move too far away or the generator is destroyed).
3: The teleporter shouldn't run out, it should have to be destroyed, but she shouldn't be able to gain any ult with an active teleporter.

Hitomi Nabatame has voiced a number of good characters. I'm not a fan of Symmetra's playstyle or look though, and the poo thing is making it worse.
If people actually played her during the open beta, they would know that Symmetra is not only viable, but a fucking game winner. Think of her teleporter like 6 guaranteed Mercy revives. Her shields also save 200 health characters from insta-dying from a full charged Widowmaker bodyshot. She's more than "durr minisentries"

I'd say Symmetra is strong. Her shields needed to be nerfed. The 50hp was to much, Tracers didn't stand a chance. Her primary fire is a nightmare to to Hanzo and can melt all the tanks (except Roadhog). I'd love if her alt fire would charge and not just fire off, though.
What she desperately needs is for her alt to charge while her teleporter is up. Her inability to charge her ult behind a place teleporter stops her from being the auto-include character everybody wants on their team.
Symmetra is a hero that really polarizes between casual play and commpetive play. Pub scrubs will right her off, because the concept of cover will never get across to them.

Symmetra does the most damage in the game, second only to a turret mode Bastion.
The key difference is, she can move around while doing it and her damage goes through shields. This completely fucking wrecks several heroes outright and 25 extra shields on your entire team is amazing once you know the damage that most abilities deal.
New players will avoid her and not understand why she is good. Hell - most players I saw in the open beta didn't even know what the teleporter in the spawn area even did, they would just run right past it.

Symmetra's kit is just generally confusing. Setting up all her defenses takes too long especially after the first wave of sentry destruction. Symmetra's awful on offense, but a terror on defense. Properly placed and maintained turrets can all but shut down the alternate routes to the objective (preventing the bastion/torb/defense from getting flanked)
With good turrets, you can have your first teleporter online after the first attacker res pulse of the game, which turns the usual defender's run back to the first point from 15+ seconds to almost nothing and will DRAMATICALLY slow their advance.
Turn the side hallways into a thousand pinpricks of death, every blind corner hiding a turret, and when you see the indicators from turrets, run in and hit whatever's trying to sneak through with a charged right click when they're distracted by a turret and finish them off with the left. The turrets are more like tripwires and hindrances that force them to check every doorway before moving on than something that's going to kill someone outright.
If not properly countered, a good symmetra makes the first point of a payload map a hell of a lot harder for the attackers, ultimately giving them much less time on the second point, if there even is one.
I think Symmetra will end up buffed before too long. She is by far the weakest of the supports.
Her shields are subpar, her turrets do somewhat okay damage, but are super squishy and aren't much to handle if an enemy expects them.
If her shield applied a small heal over time while the shield is active, or even applying a hearty shield when using the teleport would instantly make her more attractive.

Symmetra's offensive game is different but I don't think it's less effective. You just need to be aware that your turret placement must constantly move forward.
Symmetra offensive is all about drawing a line in the sand for your team to have a sort of pillow zone; an area of retreat that's safer than not and denies enemies a chase. Her alt fire denies entire lanes from aggression, and once she's followed her team onto a capture point, turrets IN ADDITION to team mates are a consistent and lethal threat.
Teleporters are game-winners on either side.
I played Symmetra almost exclusively on the last day of the beta; it's a different beast for sure. Some maps are also terrible for her; it's a circumstantial game.

There's more than 6 turrets there, though. It took multiple symmetras to pull that off, and even then a single pharah that flanks can clear that in three rockets. Junkrat flanking from the side could clear the entire bridge with a single mine, and once that turretspam is neutralized, you're left with two symmetras that will get torn apart by anyone that can counter a circle-strafe.

There's some confusion over it because the shields apparently do have limited health like Reinhardt's shield (something in the neighborhood of 250 HP) but if they're destroyed by enemy fire before they time out, all excess damage on the final hit is absorbed. So she can use her shields to completely nullify high damage single-hit ults like Junkrat or D.Va, but not so much ults that deal their damage with multiple weaker attacks like Pharah or Reaper (though the shield's still useful against them)
