Shit, the bottom one is unsettling.
whats weird is that having played these old games when I was a kid, when I look at them its hard to identify what's 'missing'
they look fine even with their visible pixels and no lighting
my brain was programmed into accepting them as they are, I wonder what else I'm brainwashed into accepting
>>338438567

>>338439310
DS games actually had fairly good models and textures
They just happen to be impossible to see without emulation
I wish I had a picture, but my buddy had trouble running the new Mad Max game, so we set it to the lowest possible resolution in order to get it to work. The text in game was so unreadable that it looked like that text that goes across scouters in Dragon Ball Z. Completely alien.

I used to play wow on a literal toaster and it never looked that bad
I probably should have turned down the settings, but I initially played at 7-9 fps
I got a newer computer later on and was able to get it up to 12-13 fps, the difference was like night and day
Finally I managed to make my own gaming pc and was able to play with max settings and constant 60 fps, I thought I was going to die
>>338455561

For me the pic as a whole matters. If I can get it slightly more pixelated, while retaining all the visual features, that strikes me as the far better compromise

why? I honestly don't get it. What's the benefit? You can see a flat brickwall perfectly crisp, I see a bump mapped torch-lit brickwall with slightly lower resolution. Hell, I could probably identify the brickwall as such, because of its surface. Why should I care that the mortar on it is 3 pixels thick, instead of 4? What do I gain from crispness that makes up for the severe loss in definition?

Its just source engine being shit, you don't "need" to but at 144fps a source game will not look smooth compared to 144fps on another engine. You need double your monitor's referesh rate to make the game not have any micro frame stuttering and seem truely smooth. As well as this, having higher fps decreases input lag.
Luckily, its easy with modern builds to get extremely high fps in source games.
averages about 50-60 fps at 1440p with my 7850.

Those aren't the lowest graphics though, that's the shitty 360/PS3 backwards port/demake that I have no idea why it was released.
>>338462445
I wouldn't think that would be all that different from a standard RTS as far as AI goes. The units are only controllable in blocks of about one hundred or so most of the time and there's virtually no autonomy for each of the individual soldiers. I wouldn't think there was a lot of ai calculations between what are essentially just set piece fights between the blocks of units.
>>338462639
It's part of good game design to pick environments that don't expose the weakness of your engine. Lots of devs forget that
>>338462801
The blocks are just the command/input structure. The units still have individual locations on the screen, they die individual, they have direct unit-to-unit interactions. All these need to be done by the AI. Even if it's a dumb-as-bread AI per unit (while being smarter as a block), it's still hundreds of these dumb units, and that adds up

keeping track of them is not a problem, updating them is. Think of these soldiers as "more complex particles". Particle engines with a couple thousand particles are already quite stressful
>>338463031
The newer games don't have personal collision, which would be considerable less resource intensive than the current system in which every unit constantly runs checks to make sure it and another unit aren't occupying the same space as opposed to making them both physical things that occupy a space that is impassable to other units normally
Both methods end up with similar results but one is more resource intensive than the other.

>Well that's graphical and doesn't really have as much do with the ai
We're probably thinking different things when we mean AI. I'm not talking about a decision making AI, that's equivalent to a thinking person. The AI we're talking about at this level is little more than "follow path, attack other unit". Because that's about all you can do in the time you're given, to the number of units you have to deal with. The decision making happens on a block level, it's the reasonable thing to do. But the individual units still need to be moved. That's work the game can not skip. I doubt the units are moved through a shader program. I'd expect that to be all CPU

>>338463724
if you think that's minor changes you might need to get your eyes checked. That said, modern engines tend to keep polygon count and texture resolution constant. The changes are in the shaders. The difference is pretty harsh in terms of consumed resources and framerate, but often marginal in terms of visual changes. Does that make them shit devs? Should they cut textures and polygons just to satisfy a demand for visual change, when it has no impact on performance?

>>338464273
>It's just hard for me to imagine that those basic instructions put much load on the cpu
individually they don't. A couple thousand times, they do. It's why pathfinding AI in RTSes is so retarded, why SimCity 5 has such small cities, etc.
>I can see updating and communicating positions to the gpu as stressful
oddly enough, not really. The GPU doesn't care if it's unit locations or other meshes. The data sits in memory and is just piped to the VRAM for the GPU to pick up and handle. There's very little actual "work" involved in that. It's a reason why GPUs have such fast memory interfaces, because of the sheer volume of data, but that's about it
If collision meshes were lowered as well this game would run so much better.

>>338464593
>oddly enough, not really. The GPU doesn't care if it's unit locations or other meshes
I meant more for the CPU. I've been playing Planetary Annihilation recently which uses a very simplistic artstyle to try to take the load off the GPU, but with enough units, which is usually a few thousand, it doesn't really matter whether you're moving these units at all or not. Eventually my CPU hits 100% and the FPS tanks. I'm using an older CPU(2500k) with a newer GPU(970) so that's why I made the observation in the first place.
>>338436019

>>338465124
good chance what's killing your fps is that the game needs to update more units (maintaining the position IS an update, the CPU needs to handle that unit, if only to figure out that nothing changes). Good engines reduce update rate for units not on screen.

no wonder /v/ is so shit
>>338470620
oh oh spaghetti-o
Guess I'll just google and rely on graphics annihilating mods
>>338435912
Huh, so SR3 on lowest settings looks like SR2. Interesting.
>>338470723
ah, so you were just shitposting to begin with. Knock yourself out, I guess
>>338470682
>/v/ is shit because i like to act like knowing how to source images is some sacred knowledge only to be passed down only within the bloodline
good hyperbole bro
>>338436638
Kek'd heartily
>>338470869
Not at all, I still really enjoy the aesthetic and would love some insight from people, just like the guy before, but like, how else am I supposed to react to a "you can't" comment?
>>338471004
less hostile? Whatever. Go find your mods, you got it all figured out anyway
>>338468215
Yeah but they didn't wrap their flat textures around corners properly wither it looks like. At least the parallax one has enough depth to distract you from the corner line.
>>338471061
Oh, uh...I didn't really wanna come off as being hostile, if it's any consolation, I'm sorry I came off like that
>>338438475
t. Someone whose first console was a 360
>>338470905
/v/ is shit because it's filled with retarded kids posting memes and the same shit over and over
>>338438886
Accept my balls in your mouth feggit
>>338466218
That's literally impossible.
>>338459846
every single update that was made for counterstrike, team fortress 2, whatever else shares the same engine, was retroactively applied to ALL the source games. if you REALLY want to see what half life 2 looked like at release, youd need to find the original 1.0 version. remember that lost coast mini single level they released? where you talk to the old man and fight up a cliffside? that was LITERALLY a demo level to show off reflective shit and dynamic lighting...which they added back to half life 2 itself.
>>338471502
>/v/ is shit because it has been like it has since its inception
wow i bet you thought you were smart when you thought that lmao
>>338471868
Whatever helps you sleep at night
>>338449342
Those breasts. It looks like they made them decent size and then they were all like:"We better dont anger the feminists - our "core" demographic." And made them flatter.
>>338471993
>i have no rebuttal thus i will spout a boring and tired comeback

Doom 4 should have had a "tiny viewport" option to appeal to the old school crowd
>>338467332
early access schlock, beamng.updates slower then molasses in the matrix. but its cool. its all about cars deforming correctly, no premade damage. everything bends like it should, but dosent tear yet
outside of that its got like nothing but free roam really
>>338436223
This is how I played it on my shittop and it still lagged a bit
>>338472630
