The real Age of Dark never actually happens.
Only a shit age of diminishing flame, without ever actually going out (DS3 happened purely because it was actually on the verge of going out this time).
Every time someone tried to do usher in the Age of Dark, it was via saying "Fuck this, I'm out." and leaving the kiln, without actually doing anything to the fire. So eventually someone comes along and links the flame if you don't. Nobody bothered trying to actually put out the fire before. The dark ending in DS3 has you actually doing that.
What actually letting the Age of Dark happen means is anyone's guess though. Same applies for what it means for someone to usurp the flame instead. In either case I want to see what happened with Bearer of the Curse and Aldia, since this kind of thing should be right up their alley in terms of looking at a possible way out of the cycle.
Usurpation is best ending. End of fire close second.

Failing to link the flame is pretty much a non issue since flame follows dark anyway, you'd probably go hollow from shame though. End of fire, same shit, but you get a waifus. Becoming lord of hollows sounds cool, but you'd probably have to deal with assassins and a shutload of intrigue and all your subjects are jerky that goes crazy and you'll just fall eventually like every ruler. Plus you're a king, which means a shitton of responsibility. Usurping the flame is the best end cause you basically become god, beholden to none.
