Play VLR first, you can get it for like $20 on Aksys store iirc. It's got different atmosphere than 999 and a weaker cast, but the MC and story are waaaaay better in my opinion, and the expansiveness of the flowchart is really impressive. ZTD will rely on story elements introduced in VLR, which ended on a cliffhanger leading into ZTD. Get out of here before you get spoiled.
