Considering that you get the full dose of the Curse by injecting extra humanity/abyss into yourself via Dark Sigil, the implication is that your humanity is somehow absent or sealed away.

The odd thing is that in DaS1 and DaS2, hollowing is associated with a LACK of humanity, while in DaS3, you have to provoke hollowing by ADDING humanity. I'll have to think about what this means some more, before I draw any conclusions.

To be honest, you can't tell the difference between the fire just not getting linked for too long, or it getting linked way too many times. We're never given a frame of reference, except a single still image of prospering Lordran in the first age of Fire, which says nothing at all.
Like this is a huge flaw in the storytelling, if you ask me. We have absolutely zero clue whether or not the Ages of Fire are decaying and becoming less prosperous, or shorter, or anything like that. It's pretty obvious, anon. The procedure for liking the fire gets more complex as the fire itself becomes more difficult to keep burning because it's running out of stuff to burn.
You go from having to kill the previous Lord of Cinder (the Lord Souls were only to open the door, not link the fire) and link it, then you had to gather the four reincarnated Lord Souls or 1 million regular souls to open the door to Drangleic, then sit on the Throne of Want to link the fire.
Now you need 5 Lords of Cinder to use as kindling to link the fire, and defeat the Soul of Cinder, and even then, when you link it, it's just embers. It doesn't explode like it did in DaS 1. You sit there, burn yourself, and it's just embers.
The fire is clearly getting weaker. This isn't something we can argue.
