But I do use Linux. Long term its the only option other than surrendering to all of the demands Microsoft has made on the industry with Windows 10.

At least we get better Vulkan game performance too.

I like being able to run most games at higher than 20 fps.
>>
>>338399219
Actually 2000+ games now with games from just about every publisher other than Zenimax, EA, and Ubisoft so lots of good stuff and very little shit. Linux games are more heavily represented in the top 10 and top 100 games than they are on Steam as a whole.
>>
>>338399683
Almost all of that is indie shit or unplayable eON ports.
>>
AMD stopped supporting my old ATI HD 4650 card on linux. I tried running XCOM Enemy Unknown using the open source drivers and I got like 10fps.

I value my time too much to use Linux.
>>
>>338399897
Most of the Eon ports run really well, typically better than the Feral ports but they really need to both switch over to Vulkan it will get them better results.

>>338399987
Their focus has really been on the open source drivers for the more recent cards that are actually viable for modern games. Its actually paid off too because every Nvidia card with the proprietary drivers no longer performs better than every AMD card which used to be the case with Catalyst.

Because I'm not a virgin, weeaboo loser who gets nerdgasms from using obscure, unusable OSs

Also, I actually play video games

I do. Sadly I still dual-boot with W8+Classic Shell because of gayms.
>>

>Most of the Eon ports run really well
They all run noticeably worse than on Windows and some games are outright unplayble.
>>
>>338398215
I do. In fact I use Gentoo
>>
>>338401082
Actually a few of them have benchmarked slightly better than on Windows but that is the exception. The only games that I've had trouble running (R9 280 + Radeon/Mesa 11.2) are the Saints Row games but they're apparently problematic regardless of the driver. Supposedly Feral and VP are both converting their tools over to produce Vulkan instead of GL and that should hopefully yield performance increases.
>>
>>338401369
Which ones have benchmarked higher? I've played The Witcher 2, Bioshock Infinite, and two of the Saints Row games and all of those run worse for me on Linux.

Not me personally, I don't have a Windows partition. I remember seeing benchmarks of Dirt Showdown though that had it running as fast or faster than Windows and most of the Eon games have acceptable performance as long as you're up to date on your drivers and not using Catalyst.

I mean, the only reason I have Windows right now is because Killer Instinct and SFV aren't on Linux.

Ubuntu is just as stable as Windows at this point. I've never had issues with Ubuntu having a registry fuck up. The only thing that doesn't "just wurk" out of the box is flash player, and if you're too illiterate to "sudo apt-get browser-plugin-freshplayer-pepperflash", then you shouldn't be posting on 4chan.

Not all Linux distros are Arch. Some of them actually work well.

Right now they typically get lower performance because they're using a tool to convert from one high level API D3D (9 or 11) to another high level API OpenGL (typically 3.3, 4.1, or 4.3) and this never works well because D3D and OpenGL don't share a similar design and so a fast path in one will never really equal a fast path in the other. This is why there's a lot of pressure on the Mesa developers to hit OpenGL 4.5 support and start working on optimization because a tool assisted port from D3D11 to OpenGL 4.5 AZDO would work a lot better.

Its why there's also a lot of optimism about Vulkan because wrapping a high level API to a low level API will produce much better results of the sort seen with DX9->Gallium as in Gallium Nine on AMD hardware. Also D3D12 and Vulkan do share a common ancestor in Mantle so code that is fast on one will more directly translate into code that is fast on the other.

I really like linux desktops but dual booting is a pain and I'm also too stupid to learn a new OS

>Ubuntu isn't real Linux
It uses the Linux kernel, and it's Unix-like, so it's real Linux. The only time you could argue that something running the Linux kernel isn't real Linux is if Google is involved (Android, Chrome OS).

The problem there is that Microsoft seems to have completely lost it and are in the process of turning Windows into a locked down tablet style platform. We're only 2 years away from Windows 7 no longer having support for the latest hardware, and less than 4 years away from it being abandon ware.

What will you do when pirating Windows is no longer an option? 2020 is going to be a dark time for PC gaming if everybody stay on Windows 7 until the last possible second and still sees Linux as not worth supporting.

I have no reason to. I'm satisfied with Windows and so long as I have internet, I will be monitored by the NSA.

I've already removed my telemetry services, so I'm not weorried about Microsoft either.

Just looking. But I might tell people about your film collection, and make jokes about all the sex toys you have stashed away.
>>
>>338406129

yeah you're not wrong

in the extreme present though I know how to remove almost all bloat from windows 7, and didn't pay anything for it, and i'm not dumb enough to let it update to 10 or reinstall WAT

it's honestly probably up to nvidia what happens so far as drivers and gameworks, not ms; there might be better money in supporting steam os linux or something
>>
>>338398215
I use Lubuntu on an old netbook. It's a great distro for old hardware. Linux is a great OS but its only problem is the lack of AAA games but that due to MS control of most of the game market with DirectX.
