Plain lie. It was just using a different method to represent perspective because of the limitations of the time. People need to understand that if it looks "3d" then it is. computer graphics may have some strict definitions on what is or isn't 3d according to them, but computer graphics can suck my dick. Artist have been representing 3d space on flat surfaces for ages and I will tell you if you can plot out it's perspective, then it's 3d and that's the end of that.

Unless you clone it, the object it's not in the original X,Y,Z anymore at that time, but somewhere else.
You also need the time coordinate to locate the object in that specific space.

No, the game inerprets itself as 3D. It renders floors, walls, and ceilings
The game is 2D since no Z coordinate is ever used, and all the NPCs are sprites, but the game does render a 3D world.

blatantly wrong. A monster in a pit can't shoot you unless you're close to the ledge for example.

Likewise if the player is in a pit just deep enough that projectiles fired straight ahead would collide with the wall, they won't if the vertical autoaim makes the projectile target a monster at a high enough position.

I know they were called 2.5D back in the day, and also how in the original doom every sprite stretched from floor to ceiling, ie. you could not go over/under enemies for instance.
But they did have some sort of Z axis, right? monster sprite art could move up and down, and projectile trajectories also took it into account when there was some sort of height difference.

i don't think they did. there was no aiming up/down. if you shot straight ahead you would hit someone no matter if they were "below" or "above".

Yo ucan see this in the actual code, everything coded and how the computer interprets the data is done with x,y coordinated rather than x,y,z.

The game is read as a top down shooter, not as a 1st person, thats why in doo myou shoot infront of you and it hits enemies regardless of their appearing z coordinate.

Thats also why rooms are NEVER stacked ontop of one another, becuase then the x, y coordinated would be indentical.


The games technically are 2D but the way they are render using camera and ray tracing techniques + drawing textures gives the illusion of 3D.

I think "entities" could move up and down, but two different couldn't share the same X,Y for some reason, until they added that feature in source ports.
The autoaim is what you're talking about, with it you could instahit shit above/below you when using hitscan weapons, but projectiles like rockets or plasma balls had to actually travel to reach their target, and you could clearly see them going up/down.

I recall people calling Doom and most doom-clones 2.5D back in the day, at least after they released Duke3D "first" "real 3D" game, on the reasoning you couldn't have rooms above rooms, and a few other differences. Even though you couldn't really look up/down in D3D either without the renderer going nuts and displaying everything distorted as fuck. It wasn't until Quake that you really couldn't look up and down properly, as far as I can remember.
So yeah, they sounded more like bullshit terms to describe stuff half-inaccurately employed mostly in developer/fanboy banter.

How are those textures rendered if it is all programmed as if it is top down? How do raising platforms work? How does collision on walls work that actually have platforms "above" you that you can move around. How does the game know you are on the right "elevation" to be able to move around on those platforms and that you are not at a lower level, or know to drop you to that lower level if you run off the platform?

2.5D was used to refer to pseudo 3D graphics. Like Parallax Scrolling and Mode 7.

The modern 2.5D refers to games with 3D graphics but 2D gameplay. They are not parallax scrolling.
