Paying for a subpar TF2 which is free is nonsensical. That's mostly why people are whining. After 5 days of Beta, I feel like I've seen nearly everything in the game.
I'm not really confident for the long-term viability of Overwatch. Most people will play it 2 months before switching to something else. They need to improve the skill ceiling and give me reasons to get hooked outside of grinding for the shitty box/cosmetics.
For a game like this $40 is really not bad at all. Blizzard nailed it with that price point. To top it off there are no microtransactions. There's been a lot of faith restored in Blizzard lately.

The currency and the stats (you need 8000 hours on the game to unlock everything) make it pretty clear that the skins will also be buyable with real money.

I was playing with some Blizzard QA dudes (friends of friends) in the open beta that brought the topic up on their own. It's all but confirmed that they're going to sell loot boxes in a similar fashion to Hearthstone packs but they haven't figured out the price points yet; the conversation was along the lines of "any idea what they're going to cost yet? I assume loot boxes, if sold, will run under the same principle. The only problem is that it seems a lot less profitable. You're really only going to want certain shit for certain characters, it's unlikely you'll want to collect them all. Basically you'll stop buying loot boxes way before you stop buying card packs. The assets quality and graphical fidelity is simply nowhere near what you expect from a full price game in 2016. Look at any of the high budget shooters recently and compare them to Overwatch.
