The visual design I imagine - its already red and desolate, and its blasted surface blurs the line between Hell and reality.
In addition, it seemed like the next logical step for humanity back in the 90s - the Moon had been landed on, and Mars was the next closest. As such, Martian colonisation was a common scifi trope at the time (eg: Total Recall)

Some of the tapes I heard here and there is that when they were colonizing mars there was some research into this... Hell place, you got get to from mars or something where you would never get tired, and eventually someone dropped the dick and demons flooded in, also something about a cube that traps demons.

Originally (when Tom Hall was still with id) they were gonna set it on some extrasolar planet called Tei Tenga, and the game was going to be like an RPG with extensive characters and deep plot. But then either Carmack or Romero went "plot in a video game is like plot in a porno" and scrapped it for something more down to earth. You can still see monitors in Doom that say "Tei Tenga"
