If you want to maximize your money, sell stuff to Creeper or the Mudcrab merchant. They buy it at full value. Creeper's in that orc-infested building in Caldera. The Mudcrab merchant is a little harder to find.
Honestly though, you're going to be rolling in money eventually anyway. Relatively early, you'll be fighting stuff that drops gear that'll clean out a merchant immediately. Even if you're not using the "special" merchants, there comes a point where it's hard to *not* be fucking rich.
So don't really worry about it.
The same applies to combat. There's no cap on your skills. You will max out all of them eventually if you feel like it, and a high-level skill makes just about anything a deadly weapon. Plus, Morrowind's a single-player game with a difficulty slider. If you feel like you're getting your ass beat, slide it down, and move it back up later. Nobody's around to judge you.
If that sounds too casual to you, just wander around and explore until you get stronger. If there's one thing Morrowind has, it's a fuckton of interesting, out-of-the-way places to fuck around in.
The gist of all this is that Morrowind's not really a game you have to min-max in. You can. But the game's designed in such a way that, pretty much no matter what you do, you're going to be a filthy fucking rich unkillable god eventually.

Sell good loot to Creeper in Caldera's orc house always (or the mudcrab, but creeper is more accessible). Buy the summon golden saint spell and then enchant a ring to conjure one for ~13 seconds or so. Use either the best soul gems or Azuras Star to get the best soul capacity. Enchant something to give you at least 6ish fatigue restore and you'll never run out. Enchant more stuff with health regen and never die. Have fun!

At first, that's the reason I hated Oblivion too. But then I came to realize that Oblivion had a lot of good things about it too. For example, the questlines are almost always interesting an fun, with only a few rare exceptions. Most name given weapons are given their own models, unlike Skyrim.
Also it's still fun as fuck to place poison apples everywhere and watch as everyone eats themselves to death.

One thing I hated about Oblivion's ridiculous scaling on everything is that you had to purposely min-max if you didn't want to get frustrated.
If you made your majors abilities that you actually use frequently shit would get out of hand quickly. This combined with the stupid stat allocation system based on skill ups made things rough.
If you had a bunch of non-combat abilities that you picked as majors and used them frequently it was very possible to get outpaced on your combat abilities by the scaling.
Of course you could always just never level up and keep things piss easy. I think the only thing you miss out on is that the Daedric quests need level 10 or something minimum to occur.
