Paid mlds got repealed, their servers never seem to go down, there are clearly other platforms available (GoG, Origin, Desura, Uplay), and plenty of even smaller devs don't put their stuff on Steam. Case in point - Notch. Yes, it's huge now, but that wasn't always the case. And even still, there are a lot of games you can only get off of Steam. A lot of Indie devs put their stuff up there for the distribution, marketing, exposure... They don't get bullied to put stuff up.
If your gripe is that Steam is the biggest of all the online distribution platforms... well, it is. It wedged its foot in the door on day one and it's been numero uno ever since. There's a wide selection of games for reasonable prices on a reliable service with a lot of features - that tempts a lot of people. There is a reason GfWL failed - and will fail again.
Valve has shitty customer service. This is very true. They need to improve on that massively.

Yeah, because literally nobody could play it. Overwatch is weird. It's a polarizing game, but the polarization is over whether you've played it or not. There are countless stories across the net of people having no interest in the game, but once they got to actually try it during that open beta they were hooked.
It will most definitely become more popular overall, just because it attracts people outside of the regular fps community

CSGO is not fun to a huge amount of players. I'm good at shooting so I can enjoy CSGO but the mechanics are so dull. You have to stand still and shoot at someone else who is standing still and shooting. If you can't do that you can't play.
Overwatch on the other hand has roles that many different players can enjoy with many different styles of play. Complete shitters can at least be competent Mercy's and they actually enjoy it. That is why you're seeing all of these players who never enjoyed FPS games suddenly getting hyped for Overwatch.

But I'm seriously anxious about the competitiveness and the ranked plays.
The few tournaments I watched were an uninteresting mess to look at, with completely boring setups. If you want to play the ranked/competitive mode I'm afraid of the MOBA-effect where someone need to play tank / healbitch all game all day or it's impossible to win while people are fighting to be the fragger.
