I honestly wondered about mid to late 90's CGI. While this particular picture must've taken months to render, does any modern rendering software, be it for games or otherwise, use the same effects and features as these programs did? Art Professor here, I disagree with your color assessment. One of the many classes I teach is color theory, and while it's not nessicarily as good for advertising to small children and I admit to not being in the advertising field in general, the color choices in the original are far better, and easier to look at due to the more saturated colors being used a bit more sparingly to accent and highlight important bits, although neither is doing that particularly well (which is to be expected as the purpose of the cover is mostly to draw the eye. The overlapping distance created and general visuals of banjo's cover is way better at quickly visually showing what the game is about. The one real good thing about yooka's cover is the character silhoutting, which is way better than banjo.
Also on a personal level, I find Banjo's more appealing to look at because of the differing textures, yooka looks far to plasticy, but that's a current trend so, it's to be expected I guess.
