It's objectively worse than SMT: Nocturne because it doesn't have random encounters every five millliseconds whenever you want to get from A to B, there needs to be random encounters when you're walking around town, there needs to be random encounters when you're talking to your girlfriend and there needs to be random encounters when you run from your bedroom door to the futon. If they had included that feature I am sure it would've been as incredible perfect as any mainline SMT game since that, with the exception of demon negotiation is the only difference really. The absence of random encounters everywhere turned this game from an 8/10 into a 3/10 imo.
Luckily it had the best music though.

I will admit that the S-links don't do enough. In P4 they fixed that up a bit by making party members become more useful as you rank up their S-links but the exp bonuses are just not enough. Calendar system is only bad because ATLUS didn't put enough effort into making sure you always had S-links available if you hadn't completed them. Despite this, I played through all of P3 and P4 twice each before playing Nocturne and I did not get even close to as tired of the SMT combat system by the end of my Persona play-throughs as what Nocturne managed to do to me in the first four hours.

Social Link system is broken. It somewhat works for blind playthroughs but once you figure it out you basically hang around with the same person over and over again until you from a "bond" so special that you ditch them forever and never talk to them again for the rest of the game.

The game's social links all have the same problem where despite each character having some legitimate personal quandaries they all ultimately bend to the status quo solution often in some contrived way that doesn't really solve their core issue. This is probably half a reflection of the more collectivist Japanese culture, and half not wanting to deal with characters who might be in a different situation at the start of their social link then and their end.

I liked it, but I liked 3 more.
In 3 almost every character except fuuka (but fuck fuuka anyway) had a major plotpoint in the story that was either dramatic, sad or others but you felt for them (for most of them anyway)
In 4 it almost seems scripted, like: "Yey! We just saved this kid from the tv world! oh boy! A superstar just came to our town I wonder who will be the next character that gets thrown into the tv-world!" and so on.
I dunno maybe its not a big deal to some but I noticed it. I just like the P3 characters more.

Until then, I have to deal with some of the ugliest dungeon designs I've ever seen, horrible music (and not just lotus juice's audio diarrhea, even the dungeon themes are rancid shit), disgustingly lame maps and gimmicks, corndog-chan's stupid ass showing up even when I fast-forward through all the aforementioned terrible writing. Plus a fuck-ton of other little irksome things that all add up to annoy me really hard, really fast.
To put this into perspective, I felt that EO4's demo was pretty different than past EO games, and a bit weird, but after a while, I was captivated and couldn't wait for the full game. I put a few hours into Persona Q and couldn't wait to put it down. It's like they learned nothing from past games and threw in as much awful shit as they could. I feel disgusted that anyone would want to play with voices on and battle speed set to anything other than fastest.

Honestly I enjoyed the P4 cast more because I feel like you got to know them better. Whilst they didn't have a whole lot of character development during the main plot, the way you actively interacted with them outside of the main plot endeared them to me.
To contrast with P3, all the characters outside of Junpei and Yukari and maybe Fuuka just felt like people you lived and were forced to fight monsters with. You don't get the same connection.
Main plot in P3 was way better though with actual intrigue and well executed plot points. P4 felt like they were making shit up as they along, as fun as the ride could be at times.

You work on your relationships with them and are rewarded by the IS getting combat bonuses on top of improving Persona fusing.
In P3 on the other hand SLs and the Main Plot almost seem separate from eachother.

Orpheus has been called within his specific cults a messiah figure. There are paintings of him in which he purposely resembles Jesus. So, it's foreshadowing.
Also, have you read the Orpheus myth? Orpheus is the archetype of a musician, and his "master of strings" line simply refers to this. The connection here is with Makoto's connection to music--his headphones, which he is never seen without.
More importantly, Orpheus went on a journey. He traveled into Tartarus to save Eurydice (if you notice, Junpei's and Yukari's initial Personas are also Greek figures whose myths feature them traveling into Tartarus--this was intentional). His goal was to save someone. He failed, and eventually met death (Thanatos).
What makes a Messiah figure a messiah figure? Death. Orpheus (someone who is regarded as a messiah) + Thanatos = Messiah. That's the rationale for the fusion recipe.
It's all very purposeful. Nothing is insignificant, so if you critically think about Orpheus' characteristics and story, it falls into place.
