You don't even need to be good to finish hard games. I suck at godhand yet I played it, beat it and enjoyed it. "git gud" is more of a response to people blaming game mechanics on their own failures. even on /v/ you don't get derided with it unless you're being a lil bitch and unfairly blaming the game

It's not "gaming journalism" that's the problem, it's the nature of journalism as a whole. I'm a professional journalist and honest to god the climate of the industry right now is fear and loathing (no pun intended). The older generation looks at us younger guys and shouts "save us!" Like we've got the magic bullet to competing with sensationalist bullshit and STILL being profitable.

You can't fix "gaming journalism" without first fixing journalism as a whole.

God almighty what a time to be alive. I picked the wrong time to love journalism, that's for sure.

I don't think every game need to be dark soul. The new Kirby game is easy as fuck but I'm still having fun with it. On the other hand I don't think every game has to compromise to conform to every skill level.

People need to remember not every game has accommodate you 100%. It's ok to walk away from a game that's too hard for you to beat.

The KID one, like, okay there are weird mini games that could be seen as dodgy by some people but the surrounding game wasn't that great.

The Bayo 2 one pisses me off more, they fully acknowledge that it's "better than the first" and how fantastic the mechanics are, but give it a 7.5 because it has a sexy woman in it. That's the main negative point in their conclusion that they stress three times, apparently enough to knock the game down to a 7.5

This. My gf can't stand dark souls and Bloodborne, but when I watch her play she has no patience to learn the spacing, the timing, all the tools and weapons available, and the essence of those games is you have to learn to play them on their terms. The games aren't bad: she just wants to do whatever she wants because that's what she wants out of games, and these are games that demand you learn them, rather than just letting you stumble through.

I think a lot of these "journalists" are really just frustrated and embarrassed that they aren't the target demographic for a change, and they are so accustomed to touring through games however they want that they can't comprehend what people could possibly enjoy about a game that's more than an inch deep. They like the amusement park Zelda adventure, not the challenge of exploring and mastering something through exploration and patience. They can't imagine resistance and delayed gratification are satisfying because they just want to "play a game," not expend effort.

People will feel like they wasted their time and/or money if a game is too hard for them and they're unable or unwilling to get good enough to enjoy it. I don't personally agree with that mindset, I quite enjoy the process of learning and overcoming a game, but especially for casual players I understand where they're coming from.

These threads always make me sad.

In my childhood I dreamt of a video game related job. In my ignorance I thought I had to learn to program to accomplish that.
Back then I didn't realize that making video games has many different aspects to it, and game developers are more than just programmers, for example there are artists involved too.
And even in my wildest dreams I couldn't imagine there would be a time, when some people are PAID TO PLAY vidya and write about it.

I could have been one of those people, instead of those bitter entitled nu-males, who hate the very games they're supposed to play.
And here I am now, working at a nuclear research institute, coding some high voltage module controlling software.

The combat wasn't particularly fleshed out with it being pretty lacking in combos, the plot was a confusing mess but not in a cool usual Suda 51 kind of way, just largely incoherent, bosses weren't great.
>>
Is PC gamer the last good video game "publication?"

They are pretty based
>>
>>338261748
I'd argue that you can fit Gone Home on a horror list

If you play it without knowing the plot it makes you think the game is a horror, gradually ramping up the dread until you realise that all of the horror stuff was just incidental details

There's the ghost stuff, the red hairspray in the bath that looks like blood, the secret passages, the dark lighting

A big part of what actually works about GH is playing with your expectations

This guy is a faggot, but I will say that the opposite end of the spectrum is just as bad.

I used to play a small indie halo-like shooter, which had a small group of 12-year-olds who thought themselves hardcore competitive gamers. The developers used to be pretty open about taking criticism and suggestions for the game, but eventually it reached the point where every post on the forums would be shouted down by a horde of elitist faggots who thought their shit didn't stink. One of the children in particular literally refused to consider your points in an argument unless you could beat him in a 1v1. He spoke in 4chan jargon too so I know he's one of you faggots. Today the forums are dead because the competitive kiddies chased everyone else off and then moved to CS:GO.

Again, I'm definitely not defending the mouthbreathers who think every game should have skippable everything, but the YOU'RE NOT A PRO-LEVEL PLAYER SO YOU DON'T GET AN OPINION mentality really needs to fuck off. Surely there is middle ground between the two.
>>

>>
>>338259450

This is unfortunately how a lot of kids these days are raised. They are not taught about failure and the fact that some people are just bad at some things. Most of them never fail anything (even when they do) and even if they actually do fail they're just told they got an A for effort or some other bullshit to hide the fact that they failed.

It seems the people raised like this are starting to become adults now and are trying to apply this same logic to video games. They need to fuck off.

Literally me when I first played an FPS with a controller. Man, fuck this, why do people put up with that?
>>
>>338261896
OP and this are essentially the same problem.
Games having watered down mechanics and games catering only to a small part of the community are both the result of the failure of the developers' integrity.
Instead of simply making the game true to their initial vision of the game, they start to please a certain demographic, or even worse, trying to please everyone.
>>
>>338261892

>>
>>338259901

Back in the day, being a programmer and a game dev were pretty much the same thing, but obviously visual expression has gotten so complex simple art won't cut it anymore (unless you're indie, and even then it's a toss up), so yeah things change. Kinda like space invaders, shoot where they're going to be, not where they are, not so easy though.

For the perceived horror elements of the game to work you have to go in absolutely blind. That doesn't make it a horror game, that makes it false advertising. P.T. is horror, any of the first person exploration games are horror, classic resident evil and silent hill are horror - gone home, just like dear esther and everything else by the chinese room, are guided museum trips.

It makes me sad, is what it is. Journalism is incredibly fulfilling for me. I'm an idealist, I know, but I still have this vision of this noble truth bringer, this cigarettes and coffee sorta guy who lives and dies by the validity of his word. The kinda journalism you read about in your history classes.

There's still an incredible need for journalism. We saw that with the Snowden leaks, and recently with the Panama Papers. We have a duty so important to our country that there are stipulations in the Constitution that apply specifically to us.

And it's all changing. I don't know where this ride may take me, or if it will ever end, but I'm not ready to get off Mr. Jefferson's wild ride just yet.

>>
>>338262241
But it is, just like The Evil Withins marketing campaign showing only the mansion bits and forest exploration which fooled me into thinking the game was set in a slightly science fiction'y reality like the classic Resident Evil titles. I felt completely betrayed when i realized that the whole game is set in the angsty teenage killers mind where nothing really makes sense and the whole level can change at any time.
>>
>>338262139
The game didn't cater to them, that was the thing. The developers wanted something fun and casual like Halo 3, and the vocal majority wanted a Halo 1/2 clone where every fight is a boring long range pistol or sniper duel. the developers tried to balance the two visions, got so much shit for it that they practically got chased off of their own forums.

How come there is no alternative to these shill / clickbait based blogs that is also a sustainable business model?

At least one site?

Same is with movies. Look at how Rotten Tomatoes pushes the agenda of cultural marxism by giving extremely low 'metascores' to doubleplus ungood crimethink works. In advance.

What's worse, now ecelebs are starting to have more clout than sites that didn't put personality in front of the video game.

There are two sustainable business models for written content:

Ad-based (which means you have to generate as many clicks as possible to even be profitable) and subscription-based.

Nobody wants to pay a subscription for quality written content, so in the end I guess we get what we deserve.

Gaming skill has nothing to do with it, and I guarantee you 99 percent of /v/ has no SKILL to accurately understand a video game. You don't know how orthogonal projection works, you have no idea what anisotropic filtering is, how the parallax model in a certain video game was made, how the animation influences response etc. It's a highly technical medium so people sidestep it into "feels" and "30fps lol" nonsense.

Structuralism is the only objective approach to video game criticism, this is - in terms of symbolic significance, literary, aural, whatever merit - an infantile medium with extremely simplistic "messages". It needs to be judged by the umbrella term TECHNOLOGY and when you educate yourself in things that matter you can clearly see that games are getting worse and have less features than those released 30 years ago; look at western indie scene who didn't quite reach the lofty heights of fucking NES video games.

I think what he's referring to is Reuters operating as a wire service.

Wire services generally do very little fact checking and shit like that, they expect the actual journalists to do all that.

Time and time again wire services have been show to distribute any old bullshit, even blatant bullshit, without much care and that journalists rarely bother to fact check what they find on the news wire.

why is it that when printed video game magazines gave way to online video game journalism, the journalism part went away?

does it have something to do with no longer working at a more conventional office but being an over glorified blogger? (thus allowing a broader selection of potential employees besides the well adjusted ones who can commute to an office every day)

because while VG journalism may still have been full of shilling before, it still had a more professional air about it. games felt like they were actually reviewed.

This is the failure of impressionistic criticism - you can interpret anything ANY way you like if you choose to stay away from the OBJECTIVE approach.

And yes, there is objective approach - technical side, comparison with other adventure games's mechanics and the method of storytelling, not flowery phrases, but true storytelling through interaction. This is why western video games avoid TECHNOLOGY based criticism like the plague.

Yeah, except Sokal mocked people like Derrida and Lacan, who I personally view as nigh charlatans as well. Seriously, read Adorno's pop music criticism and you'll see how it could apply to video games as well, especially in context of casualization, skill and design.

I'm not interested in buzzwords and I've actually read and studied the works you consider a threat to the Western world, and believe me, you fell for a meme.

Mate he's totally on the fringes of the discipline

Everyone know of Bloom and you won't go through a literature degree without being told about him but he's generally taught/seen as a contrary point of view

Not as in "lol ignore this idiot" but "Here's someone who goes against the general views of criticism, read them to see an alternate opinion". That absolutely is the fringe of the discipline.

Bloom's valuable as a critic up until about the 19th century, however once you go beyond that period his opinions tend to become less justifiable and more deliberately outlandish.

Easy as fuck, use this simple guide :

1.Find your target audience.
2.Pander as much as possible to them.
3.Now this is the most important part so listen up, make NEGATIVE threads about your website. Something like "am I the only one who finds this website problematic as fuck?" or "this asshole is shitting on Uncharted 4 for not being video gamey enough , ugh, let's ddos him"

Enjoy free publicity and rake in all the dosh. Think of me at night when you hire a 10k $ prostitute to suck your dick.

Honestly, not a lot has changed as far as the quality of the "journalism" has gone.

I've got a lot of old game review magazine I occasionally flick through for nostalgia purposes and all the shit we bitch about today was around back then too, e.g. blatant shilling, personal politics getting in the way of objective analysis, talking about your personal life in the middle of reviews, etc., etc.

I think the only really change has been the dramatic political shift to the "left" and that's just due to the times we happen to live in.

I guess the difference is the more diversified writers you can hire when its a stay at home job, (or do you think Patricia "the gorilla" Hernandez would have ever worked for a videogame magazine a decade ago, when it was still an office job?)

and the fact that magazines are a paid thing. you buy it or subscribe to it, thus making that the source of income. online magazines though, require ad funding, which leads to click bait and obvious paid reviews by that shitty staff of hipster bloggers

As for your questions and statements.

Clickbait works. Outrageous headlines catch people's attentions better than mundane ones. The alternatives, a lot of traditional news outlets, are dying out.

> Look at how Rotten Tomatoes pushes the agenda of cultural marxism by giving extremely low 'metascores' to doubleplus ungood crimethink works. In advance.
Present evidence of them doing this. Because, largely, it seems that the scores are derived from critical opinions.

You people still mistake actual journalism with the paid blogs of what you call gaming journalism. Most of these people never saw an university from the inside. Most of them are just a bunch of muppets.
What also annoys me is that important games often only get tested by a single person, this is just the wrong approach. Something you talk more about should be displayed with different opinions and then not only opinions, but also for what kind of people this game might be good for, even if the reviewer doesn't personally likes it.

No-fault divorce is seen as product of progressivism, which is a big reason divorce rates have gone up.

It's been a big thing on Tumblr.
Note that they're defending "pedophiles" not "pedosexuals".

The stance is that pedophiles are simply people that are attracted to children.
As such, they are constantly judged, mistrusted and simply have to fight their urges at all times. Even when they know what they feel is wrong, and refuse to act on it.

Pedosexuals are pedophiles who act on their urges, and thus have sex with children. These people are hardly ever defended, even on Tumblr.

It kiiiiiinda makes sense, but people tend to push too far and act as if pedophilia is the most natural thing in the world and should be accepted etc.

Whereas I think that a more robust statement would be that violence should be a last resort, just like war, but it's still there. And it's still used by adults. Now, my assignment for you today is this: Find someone who is bad at video games and tell them they fucking suck. You can go straight to DSP's youtube page to accomplish this, but I'll give extra points for creativity!

If you're bad at basketball, yet you make money playing basketball, people are going to tell you that you suck. If you're bad at typing, you're not getting the desk job that you want.

I refuse to take a stance on the topic.
Because while I can sympathise that you have to restrain yourself at all times as a pedophile, it's something all humans do.
You do not deserve any special care/applause for it.

I, myself, am quite dominant sexually. I like nothing more than rapeplay, when done correctly.
But I know what's right and wrong, I know I can't just go around raping people, and I don't expect people to praise me on the fact that I refuse to actually rape people.

It's a weird issue, and taking hard stances just puts a target on your back for arguments fueled by nothing but emotion.

I feel that's a very rational way of thinking about it, it's a shame that when it's discussed online people tend to take extreme stances and the whole thing turns into a shouting match.

Because I know where they're going with it.

It seems you don't hold them in high regard since you got them down to a thousand pages, or don't exactly know much about the topic. After all it was you who brought the strawman of "knowledge" about the subject into the "discussion". How very continental of you.

In fact, see? I don't need to read anything you intend to write after only reading several of your posts.

Trump accused Jon Stewart of being ashamed of his Jewish heritage for changing his name. Calling him Drumpf, because that's what his ancestors were called, was to show his hypocrisy.

I remember reading my country's biggest newspaper online. Headline of an article was: "People get older than ever before", and in the sidebar it said the following:
"New research shows that people are roughly 30 years older today than they were 30 years ago."

3 years of journalism school.

That's deep, yo.

But Trump didn't change his name, his grandfather did.
Jon Stewart did chang his name himself.

There's a huge difference.
>>
>>338272872
thing is, it's different if John Stewart changed his own name, or Trump, who's grandfather or great grandfather changed the name

You need to be pretty intelligent and multi-talented to successfully create entertainment media

The video game industry currently lacks such people

No

Same reason why George Lucas can gather several technically-talented people but still make the Prequels; you require a visionary and several people to temper that vision with their own expert input (and ability to do more than just sculpt an alien)
>>
>>338259687
I'm guessing you didn't see the article claiming boss fights are just an archaic holdover from the old days, and that nobody actually enjoys them lol
>>
>>338272872
I realize his reasoning behind it, but it still doesn't make sense seeing as Trump wasn't the one to make the name change. And literally everyone who supported the joke completely ignored this because he made such a huge spectacle of it with fireworks and selling hats
>>
>>338274126
The only part that was bad about the prequels was the actual character writing, and even then it was only Anakin and Padme. And those were the parts Lucas had his actual hands on.

You could say it was supposed to point out that every modern American is a descendant of immigrants, so it's dumb to shit on the immigrants of today. But it's still retarded since all Trump wants is reasonable immigration controls.

Also as an archaeology graduate, the "we wuz immigrants" and "we wuz the first natives" fight is really stupid, since there's a good chance Homo Sapiens wiped out Homo Erectus when the former spread out across Africa, Asia, and Europe.

What is it with the videogame industry being a dumping ground for shitters? It used to be a big deal that famous actors would voice characters, licensed music and composers doing the soundtrack, and writers typing up a story.

Now, if you failed it's "Oh well, I guess I'll have to go to GASP SOB videogames! I can't believe I have to lower myself to these standards"

Ys: Oath in Felghana

Do you see the unlit torch in the background of the screenshot? You need to use the Fire Magic you aquired minutes ago on that single torch to trigger the chest and get the Ruby and be able to use larger fire balls to kill the boss.

It's still possible to beat the boss without it.
