Continue to add new mechanics to the battle system until it's actually good. It feels really barebones, even with some of the cool things they added in VII, like the formation attacks and crit conditions on your combo strings. I don't really feel like any of my character setup choices matter, and I don't feel any battles have anything to set them apart from one another.
