Kirby is back and this time he gets to pilot a fun little mecha. (Photo credit: Nintendo)
The latest entry into the long running Kirby series doesn’t disappoint. Bringing mecha to the fray, Kirby: Planet Robobot is a wonderfully crafted platformer with more than a few hints of the brilliant anime Gurren Lagann thrown in for good measure.
Personally, I find hand held games to be some of the best around. When they are done well, they exhibit a focus and discipline that bigger console games lack. This is something the Kirby series has never really lost since its inception on the GameBoy back in 1992. The purity and focus of its design is broadly still present in almost every game since.
In this sense, Kirby: Planet Robobot has come home on the 3DS, as the platform necessitates a greater degree of focus due its technical limitations. The result is something wonderfully crafted and layered in numerous ways.
The first part of the layering occurs in the level design itself. Initially very simple and straightforward, you’re taught how to move between 2D planes, through either jumping onto stars or traveling inside pipes.
While the initial levels offer this as a one-way trip, later levels allow you to move back and forth. What’s more, elements between the planes can interact with one another. The result is that you can set up one section of a level only to go back through it in order to acquire all the items you want.
This is the main drive in each of the levels, picking up stickers and cubes. Stickers adorn your mecha, though more of on the mecha itself later, and cubes are used to unlock the boss at the end of each area.
There are a lot of copy abilities now, maybe too many, but they are all executed very well indeed. (Photo credit: Nintendo)
There are a total of 6 areas with 5 to 6 levels each. The areas are also quite varied and each has their own general theme, from the opening forest to later desert and ocean levels.
>>338220758
Each level is also split into sections and within these are the cubes. Much of the level design is focused around hiding these cubes in various new and in some cases almost fiendish ways. While some of the cubes are in plain sight, many later on are wonderfully obtuse as to their placement and acquisition.
There are three cubes available per level and when each one is acquired, a HUD element on the lower screen. The three icons are also sequential too, so that means you can track what of the level you missed getting a cube.
So while you have the level layering, you then have the copy abilities and various mecha on top of that.
The copy abilities are numerous and if anything a bit excessive. Considering how focused the level design is, the number and variety of copy abilities can feel a little redundant at times. What’s more, each ability has its own set of input commands, adding to this complexity further (thankfully these inputs are all helpfully listed on the pause screen once an ability is equipped).
>>338220878
The next level above the copy abilities is that of the mecha. These are initially captured from enemies and then piloted by Kirby. It is important to clarify here that if you have a copy ability at that point, it is not used by the mecha. However, if you come across an enemy the mecha will scan it and, if compatible, it will unleash a different set of modes.
The mecha itself also bears a strong similarity to Lagann from Gurren Lagann. Like Lagann, it too can copy abilities and also has a fascination with all things drill.
While there are around 25 copy abilities for Kirby, the mecha only has around 10 or so. There is good reason for this though; this is because the copy abilities are strategic and specific. The mecha on the other hand is just a brute force machine that can devastate enemies and most of the level as well.
The mecha is also important in how you interact with the level layers. It can destroy obstacles that bridge the 2D planes or it can control various switches to move parts of the level.
>>338220967
The mecha is a very powerful tool in Kirby’s arsenal, as it can destroy most major level obstacles and make short work of enemies. (Photo credit: Nintendo)
So on the one hand you have these lateral 2D layers for the levels and on the other you have these vertical layers for the abilities and mecha. The combination of all this makes for something refreshingly involved.
The mecha is the big highlight though and I had a lot of fun playing around with it. It also has various modes, such as a jet and a car. There are also special sections in some levels that use these vehicle modes and they reminded me of similar levels in games like Super Mario Land.
This is the main point; Kirby: Planet Robobot is very much a classically designed 2D platforming game that has been built around what the 3DS can do best. Visually it is nicely stylized and very vibrant but all of that is done purely to service what the game can do functionally.
All the layering of the level design and the various copy abilities, as well as the new mecha, are all used in concert with the fact that this is a classic platforming game done very well indeed.
It’s this focus and clarity in the game’s design, even with the excessive number of copy abilities, that is depressingly rare in gaming these days.
Each of the boss fights also utilize each aspect of what the game has to offer too and are joyous with it. The final boss fight is also epic and goes full Gurren Lagann with the mecha side of things, though I don’t want to spoil that in too much detail as it is a lot of fun.
Overall, this is a great platformer done better than most of the competition out there. If you have a 3DS then this is a necessary purchase, as it needs to be part of your gaming library.

Kirby: Planet Robobot
Platform: Nintendo 3DS
Developer: HAL Laboratory
Publisher: Nintendo
Released: April 28th 2016 (Japan)
Price: 5,076 yen
Score: 9/10
The version reviewed here is the Japanese release. While the language barrier is minimal, the fact that the 3DS is region locked means it’s worth waiting for the Western version. I also completed the game in its entirety for this review.

>>338223705
>>338223713
I don't know if this game does it but a lot of Kirby games change the food out for non-Japan based ones. That's like the closest thing to censorship I can think of for the series. They never seem to go far with Kirby censorship if Zero's bloody eye is in all versions of Dream Land 3 & 64 (though I think it's why the Dream Collection has a E10+ rating).
>>338223713

The only pressing question I have about this game: are the bosses better than in Triple Deluxe?
By this, I mean: do they spend a lot of time hanging around in the background, unable to be hit? Because this made so many bosses in Triple Deluxe just completely fucking awful.
Also, I assume this game has The Arena and The True Arena?

They do still go into the background, but it's not as bad as Triple Deluxe arguably. They seem to be quicker and shorter, at least a little bit, even thereturning Triple Deluxe bosses.Pyribbit is back in the Kirby Clash mini-game though sadly. Good thing he's not in either Arena (which yes, both normal and True Arena are in this).
>>338227598
>The only pressing question I have about this game: are the bosses better than in Triple Deluxe?
I never finished TD so I can't give an accurate comparison but some do have those portions but they don't last that long. The only one that's really annoying in my opinion is the DDD Clone Cannon boss or whatever. That one is constantly in the foreground and background. The whole gimmick is that it moves around the circle area you fight so you have to wait for it to get on your plane to hit it.
Yes, it has both of those.

Kumazaki > Sakurai > Shimomura
Kumazaki trilogy is my favorite trilogy. Three perfectly solid games that play like Super Star.
Super Star is my favorite Kirby game of all time, but Adventure and Dreamland are my least favorite kirby games.
Shimomura trilogy is to watered down for my taste, but 64 is good.
i can't wait for etrher ign or gamespot to give this game a below 9!
>>Like Kirby, like Kirby, like Kirby, like Kirby, like Kirby, like KIRBY! huff huff huff RooooaaaRRRRR! Stop hating on Kirby for no reason! Seriously, what the frick, IGN? I mean, seriously, I hate all you frickin' Kirby haters! Kirby is not a bad franchise anymore! huff huff huff Alright? I mean, seriously, what the frick? I mean, "oh, Kirby's Epic Yarn, Kirby Mass Attack, Kirby's Return to Dream Land NEVER HAPPENED!" I mean, seriously, what the frick? I mean, come on, guys. >>338230273
The gamespot review is hilarious. They were talking about the game and controls being difficult while showing themselves dying against friggin Whispy Woods.
>>338219340
Can we just agree that Super Star, 64, and Planet Robobot are three of the finest video games of all time?
>>338230429
Not really since everything inbetween had different directors and an inconsistent staff for the most part. They're not particularly connected by any means either.
>>338224063
Good. Rice is for degenerates.
>>338230429
Amazing Mirror was Directed by Tomoaki Fukui
Squeak Squad was Directed by Takashi Hamamura
Both of them seem to have little information on them, especially Hamamura. Basically they barely worked on the Kirby series beyond their 1 game. Though Fukui helped plan Squeak Squad.
As a bonus tidbit of info Kirby's Epic Yarn was Directed by Kentaro Sei

Super Star and Robobot are certainly top Kirby material, but I gotta say I actually think Dreamland 3 is better than 64. Though 64 is still pretty damn good too. Mostly for its godlike atmosphere and comfy music.

It's mostly the music for me. they really nail some of the ost. I also just find the gameplay fun, even if it's just the normal kirby formula. taking an enemy's power and using it for yourself as an "upgrade" of sorts while also having alot of different powers can make things varied. I also love how the bosses contrast so much to kirby sometimes. A cute pink puff ball facing off against the souls of the fallen sound funny to me.
>>338232610
My rule of thumb is that if a site forces you to disable adblocker, it likely isn't worth visiting anyway.
>>338232323
They're always fun, cute & relaxing. They also experiment when it comes to gameplay, especially with the spin-offs. There's a lot of variety also when it comes to the areas in most of the games and while it's nothing huge it can have some darker moments in it like Zero.

Weird, I didn't have to disable my adblocker. Either way you can check the review in the thread, someone took a screenshot and copied all the text into multiple posts.

It really depends on who's composing the individual track. Jun Ishikawa is responsible for some of the more "traditional" sounding Kirby tracks like:

while Hirokazu Ando does tracks that incorporate a lot of extra musical detail in the background, such as:

>>338233943
3, huh. Well I'll keep looking.
Tempted to ask what worlds they are in so I can narrow the levels I look in, but that would take some of the fun away, so I'll stay searching blind for now until I give up.

Those jew train and sand nigger levels are the worse I've ever played. I like Dedede Tour more that Metaknight Revenge not only because the levels were more of a joy to speed through, but you were rewarded for going towards that place you found that rare item that required you to solve that time consuming puzzle.

I found it to be more joyful to speed through Meta Knightmare Returns due to Meta Knight's attacks & special abilities but was definitely disappointed on the exploration aspect being cut-down on. Felt like there was little reward for it.
Overall I prefer Robobot over Triple Deluxe due to what the other Anon said & the brobot can be used in more areas feeling less restricted than the Super Abilities or Hyper Nova ability. Also things just generally felt more at stake and intense than Triple Deluxe did, that game felt like a laid back joyride. But eh, whatever, opinions, it's hard to really compare games that are both great in multiple ways.
>>338236667
>I agree on the frame rate being bad
Part of me thinks the game was made specifically with the New 3DS's power in mind. But it really is a shame, since I HAVE to play with the 3D on due to background being just as vivid as the foreground, and blending in.
>>338237093
>Part of me thinks the game was made specifically with the New 3DS's power in mind.
I think it was, but I heard in an older Kirby thread where someone was bitching over the frame rate it even chugs on the New 3DS, I have no idea though since I'm stuck on my Old 3DS. Can anyone in here confirm that?

Metaknight Revenge is 10 times better than Dedede Tour, mostly because of the reason you said, instead of just playing through the same game again, you're speedrunning, and Meta Knight goes really fast and has a lot of nice movement options, so it doesn't feel like a chore and it actually has speedrun potential and replayability. and fighting Dark Matter/Sectonia/Galacta Knight is a much better reward than Dark Meta Knight.
There's a lot more content in PR than TD, and the PR minigames aren't bad at all, they're just short, but, duh, they're minigames.
PR feels like a straight improvement from TD to me.

I like when they do that.
>You will never be able to erase your memory of this game's bosses
I would have lost my shit seeing Dark Matter or Star Dream first-hand.
But at least I'm blind on the stages.
>>338247443
I'm in the same boat. I can never resist looking at the bosses of a Kirby game. Especially at how True Arena looks. But I manage to keep the stages a surprise for the most part, aside from listening to the whole soundtrack.

Their good points are ability mixing/animal friends and music, and I get that the point was comfyness, but a faster paced gamelay wouldn't have hurt.
>>338261087
Dream Land 3 is rather quick, have you played it? Dream Land 2 is as fast as the first game.
>>338261215
It's been a while so I might the basing the overall experience through the last one I played (64)
What I'm sure of is that I felt pretty disappointed at the abilities having one move after playing SuperStar with its cool movesets. I had to go and find an animal friend so I could get a variant of the ability, but that variant was also a single move. Same thing with 64, but I can't complain about the Darth Maul sword, and I believe the fire sword had technically 2 moves?
>>338261489
Eh, I prefer having one distinct move you need to learn to use well at the right moments over powers with movesets that just kinda makes everything easier than it should be. I mean, move sets are fine, but it just seems like a lot of unecessary fluff. The way each friend in DL3 effect powers in their own distinct way is even better, but Kirby's Adventure is still my favorite.
>>338261768
Movesets are a good idea but the problem are those that give you lolnodamage move AND actual attacks. Fuck Bell and Leaf, Sectonia was a joke because of them and probably the reason Robobot chose to go the shoot em' up route.

Maybe you're too cynical to enjoy nice things anymore. Maybe your need for every game to be sanic fast and "hype" has done nothing but burn you in the end.
>>338266691
It's slow, the powers are lack-luster, especially considering Super Star came out before it, the combo-locked shards were often annoying(especially when you couldn't even get the combo needed in the level), and the perspective makes some things a pain.
It's still a solid game, and I enjoyed it, but it's definitely one of the weaker entries in the series.

>Dying to wispy woods

>>338266949
It has a more lax pace but not to where it's ever annoying, you never feel like you're not progressing fast enough. It isn't the issue you make it out to be.
The powers are fine, each one handles well and mixing them together is leads to some interesting results. Super Star style powers are cool, but grossly overrated I think. They don't need to be in every game, I can take them or leave them depending on the way everything's designed.
Some of the locked shards were annoying, but I can only think of three or four of them that really bugged me. Most were well-placed throughout the fantastically designed worlds, some you had to earn through real skill or wit.
I don't exactly think highly of the game personally, it has its share of flaws, but you lot seem a bit biased against it for not being muh Super Star.

Yeah, that's one of the biggest problems with review scores. It's so obviously subjective. Is ten perfect, or really good? What's 1? What's 5? Do you factor in how much the game costs in the review score?
And even those things aside, there's no "perfect palette" for video games. People enjoy different things, and there will be huge biases no matter what happens.
>>338291097

I wish Spear was in the game since it was one of my more favorable ones from RtDL & TD and also for the brobot. He could shoot harpoons or some shit if he could copy it.

>tfw don't want to read the thread anymore because I don't wan't to get spoiled further.

I know how you feel, that was me the first time around. But in the end it was a good thing since it pushed me to finally start pirating on the 3DS. Real worth it too since the wait was gonna be unbearable. Still gonna buy the game though when I can.

I hate how these recent threads gave a me a thing for the Fairy Princess. She's just so cute.

That's very true, especially when a reviewer already has a bias towards one genre and has to make a review for another kind genre that the reviewer clearly doesn't like.

Kirby Monster Hunter was pretty sweet. I want HAL to exapnd that game further like what they did with Fighter Deluxe and Drum Dash Deluxe. And I want 3D Rumble to translate to a fully 3D Kirby game.
