A conversation for intellectuals like myself, if only everyone would aspire to such heights.
Threadly reminder, Battleborn hasn't sold well and has not made it's budget back yet (and may never at this rate).
Gearbox themselves said it sold just slightly more than Borderlands in it's first week. Borderlands sold 300k in a week, so Battleborn sold no more than about 330k.
In it's second week, Battleborn had a 75% drop in sales. This means it cannot have sold more than 420k copies across all platforms.
Gearbox stated the games budget was more than Borderlands 1 and 2 combined. Borderlands 2 had a $35ish million budget, Borderlands 1 was less but not hugely so. Probably $25-30 million.
Battleborns budget was at least $60 million but estimates put it at above $70 million.
With it's current sales at $60 a pop, it's made about $25 million of that $60-70 million back. That naturally excludes the cut retailers take.

Battleborn is the top selling game on consoles in the US; 7th on PC, the issues the game does have the devs have acknowledged.
When a game first comes out people buy it. Then they play it for a while. When it's no longer new they don't obsess over it and play it all the time. This doesn't mean the game is dying. It doesn't mean everyone has to jump ship.

Also, not everyone buys a game on release. Some people wait for the price to drop. We are a month and a half from huge steam summer sales. 1. The UI is atrocious. next-level awful. With no exaggeration, a third or more of your screen-space is obscured by useless shit at all times.
2. The gameplay is phoned in as fuck. The MOBA elements don't really work with the way maps are designed. Once a team destroys a tower its over 19/20 times, and that's being pretty generous. If you team knows wtf they're doing you can come back, but it's an uphill fight that's only going to make the match require more effort than it's worth.
3. The developers clearly didn't know what to do with certain heroes, and seemed to have shoved in whatever came to mind in order to to reach a roster quota rather than actually making them all serve a purpose.
4. The game generally feels like a half-assed version of Borderlands. It features no varied weapons and generally just feels uninspired.
5. It plays like complete ass. On both consoles and PC the game seems to enjoy dropping frames every chance it gets.
6. The art style is so fucking terrible it actually affects gameplay. Characters have idiotic movements and a lot of them seem to just be incredibly thin and hard to hit one minute, then do some ridiculous motion that allows everyone to blow them away the next. In addition to that, the colors are so bright and obnoxious it actually hurt my eyes as it makes it impossible to see what the hell is happening passed giant lime green and pink explosions.
7. Because of the way the game is already faltering, and because Overwatch seems to be killing it off, the community is already cancerous as fuck, trying to either pretend that their game is the next eSports fad, or that it is perfect and you're just too stupid to see it. Everyone who is a fan of the game is quickly becoming an apologist for it.

If you have AMD there's some performance issues, I had them up until the most recent drivers were released but I don't know if you'll be the same case.
The season pass doesn't really have anything worth getting it for unless you really end up liking the PvE, the new characters and maps they add are free.
So far game balance wise I don't think anybody is broken, Galilea is kinda annoying but they've stated they'll be doing some changes.
If anything wait until the patch by the end of this month and see if any of my statements about the balance/performance have changed by asking other people. It's a fun game honestly, it's got most of the good parts of a moba like messing around with character builds and playstyles without any of the frustrating shit.
